half--mm34 vanden30

congratulations to Vanden. MM faced a difficult task defensively. Vanden showed early they could punish MMs press, MM couldn't match up 1:1, had to play 1/2 court zone. without assignments to block out, rebounds off V's goal became a question of who was bigger and/or more athletic, often favoring V. zones work best when you have a big, strong rebounding triangle set up underneath. that said, great effort by both squads, could've gone either way. Vanden is a deserving Norcal champ.

I'm guessing her athleticism was tough for MM to handle over the course of the game

Yep, could have went either way, as there were many lead changes. Steele was huge for MM and Blackshell-Fair for Vanden.
Congrats Lady Vikes!!

the reason why MM couldn't effectively press, or play player-to-player. plus, when she attacked the rim or she backed into the paint, she drew multiple defenders, making offensive boards possible for her teammates. clearly the player of the game. Vanden scored the winner on their 3rd offensive rebound of the possession. 30 of V's 46 rebounds were offensive. reminiscent of MM's 2005 Norcal loss to SMS, when the count was 30 of 56. just a mismatch on the boards, made worse by MM needing to play a contracted half court defense. still, MM can be proud, the girls represented. the rules of basketball don't allow an outcome to be any closer.

Julia Blackshell-Fair was the difference in the game. Clair Steele played great, but Blackshell-Fair was just too much for us in the end.

And their other post players played well too ...

It was one of those games that was determined as much by when the clock stopped as by which was the better team.

Elle Louie played reasonably well before fouling out so her injury wasn't a huge factor -- but she was limited in some ways which in turn limited some of our options. But no excuses ... Vanden did everything necessary to win the game.

Great high school game with two teams competing at a high level with who made the plays at the end of the game.
What was a liitle strange was coaching adjustnents throughout the game: MM had no defensive answer for Blackshell-Fair as Vanden had no defensive answer for Steele.

Sometimes certain players, certain games, and certain teams make you have to pick your poison. Some circumstances make you decide if your gonna let the whole team get into the flow of the game and beat you, or just one or two players. And some players just present a problem for some teams. I didn't see the game so hard to say. But when it comes down to a 1 point victory both teams could have won. They only let the team with the lead at the end of regulation move forward. It was Vanden this time.

Congratulations to Vanden !

Hopefully Vanden, McClatchy, Campo, ESP, WC, and Mitty bring the titles home to the North.

Even though I have grown to like and respect CW and Mitty. So I can definitely cheer for either winner of that game.

I was impressed that each team was able to take the other out of its preferred pressing/up tempo game. as the final score indicates, each was able to adjust sufficiently to position themselves to win.
