I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I was a former HS basketball player however I always knew I was never good enough to play college basketball. Maybe juco is I got really lucky in the walk in tryouts but now I am a college student however my passion for basketball remains really strong and who knows, good things happen to those who have the courage to follow their dreams. I am a computer science major but I just really want to be involved in basketball for the rest of my life. I would be down to just be a helper or assistant, basically anything that can help me get involved. Would just cold calling the coach be a good idea, or should I introduce myself after a game? I'm pretty nervous and I just wanted to get some feedback, thanks.

Hey LoganHomer... most programs need help... you might not get paid any money intially, but if you want to be around the program then yeah, just go talk to the head coach or assistant and see if there is something you could help out with. Good help on the hoop court is always hard to find. Good luck in your endeavors and let the board on here know how it works out. There's a lot of contacts here on these message boards. If you let everyone know specifically which school you would like to help out with, I'm sure someone has a contact if you need it.

The key is to learn and be mentored by a good coach that knows how to teach fundamentals, understands x's and o's, is organized with his/her program, and, generally, is a positive role model. Good luck!!!

I agree with EHS. Most programs do need help and you most likely will start out as a volunteer assistant. This means you likely will be doing scouting and videotape as well as helping out with practices.

Contacting the head coach directly would probably be your best option. Most school websites list the coaches and their contact information on the athletics page. If not, then contact the AD.

Another word of advice: get all your required docs in order before you start contacting schools. This would be the TB test, Fundamentals of Coaching Certificate, Concussion Certificate and CPR/First Aid Certification. I would wait on the fingerprint clearance as many schools want you to go through their process.

What area are you looking for?

Good luck.
