The story I have heard is that Jack has a herniated disc in his lower back, probably L5-S1 region (most common) and rather than having surgery is hoping extended rest and I would guess physical therapy will alleviate the condition. Having had a microdiscectomy 20 years ago, I am quite familiar with lower back issues and herniated discs. Supposedly, he is going to sit out the entire year (remember he already is signed by Oregon State) and get ready for college ball. I have also heard he MAY redshirt his 1st season at OSU. I haven't spoken to him (I coached him for 2 seasons in CYO ball, his 7th and 8th grade years). Hope whatever is going on will remedy with rest, but players his size are prone to back and foot problems and one just doesn't know how this will sort out when you start experiencing issues at this young of an age. Still has a lot of upside if he can get and stay healthy. Padres will still be very good without him and I will see them firsthand on Monday night.
