Just announced, Jeff Walters has stepped down as Head Football coach at Del Oro HS to take over as the schools Athletic Director. Guessing Randy Fasani is the lead candidate to replace.

Wow. I did not see this happening. A lot of tradition up their at Del Oro. I know he is going to be the AD, but I am wondering if they asked him to step down and they would give him AD job, or if it was his choice. He was only there for 3-4 years right?

From what I am being told, AD's in the district are not allowed to be a HC of a major program. They consider it a conflict of interest. I have heard that Coach Walters was looking to move into admin and AD is a good start in that direction, who knows when it would open again if he didn't take it now.

Is this pretty common? I know it is down in the Danville area and I think at Jesuit too

I was reading the Sac Bee story on Walters and it mentioned near the bottom that Joe Cattolico had stepped down at Roseville. Is that true?

Mark Lee is the head basketball coach at Placer and the athletic director. Placer is in the same district as DO. It seems there must be another reason for the change than a district rule that says you can’t do both?

No rule against being an AD/HC, what is a "major program" LOL. Heard Walters was forced out, and with no candidates on campus, DO is backed into a corner with no open teaching job.

Something is amiss. When was the last time a Del Oro coach lasted just three years? Decades ago?

I believe they have two teachers on campus that are more than qualified to take over and have plenty of experience to take over
the football team?

Yes, they do. They actually have 4 with very recent football coaching experience.

Either of the two you are thinking of would be excellent and are respected by the players.

Do any have head coaching experience? I can’t think of any who do. I’m not sure if one of the four is the ex-DC but I was told he was removed from coaching by admin?

None of them have Varsity HC experience. One of the four was HC of the freshman last season.

The ex-DC, is back working for the team. He’s had some time on the sidelines away and now after some time away is back helping. He’s a good guy, great coach, made some mistakes and comes back better for having gone through what he did.

Word on street is ex-DC activity with a teacher were on campus. Call it a mistake, call it what you want, not the character leader kids need, unreal he's still coaching. Meanwhile Larry Cunha is out. Heard great things of DO frosh coach, still surprised Walters went "three and flee", gotta be more to it.

If it’s the “activity with a teacher” on campus that I’m assuming, that’s grounds for dismissal in my line of work. Is Antelope still in need of a coach?

he statement also said that Del Oro will immediately begin its search for a new varsity head football coach. Several Sac-Joaquin Section head coaches have recently left their posts and could be an ideal fit for the program, including former Antelope coach Matt Ray and Del Oro alum Randy Fasani, who according to a Feb. 26 Modesto Bee story resigned from his coaching job at Ripon Christian to move back to the Placer County area.

Nice article in the Auburn Journal.....

Matt Ray stepped down to spend more time with his family. I doubt he would take the HC position at DO that would require even more time away from his family.

I fully agree with you...The article was written in the Auburn Journal news paper.
As for family time, maybe-maybe not...Every coach says the same thing and then surface again else where.
Nature of the business?

The press release also stated Walters will lead the inside/out coaching initiative focused on sportsmanship. The same coach suspended for unsportsmanlike behavior his first year and stripped of section title the following year? Comical. At least find a new hiring committee this time around, the DO job has always been a plum.

Yes. More time with family can be coach speak for "my admin sucks" or something else that would hinder your employment elsewhere. Most guys know not to roast their situation on the way out.

While I would agree with this, I don't believe that is the case at Antelope HS.

All this chaos is crazy. Was the DC the ex pro FB? He was doing a great job. If I’m understanding correctly he simply had a sexual encounter on campus? Guy probably has CTE from the 2000 blows to the head. Much worse he could of done. Walters guy has had some good years and even hung the invisible section title banner and wears the flesh colored ring. As for someone mentioning Cunha coming over would be a big surprise. Pretty obvious the Ripon Christian guy will take over, seems like a great coach. Go Eagles!

Two different people. Get your facts straight before making stupid comments.

The current DC is an ex-Pro and has done a fantastic job and is loved by the players and has respect of everyone in and around the program and has nothing to do with any issues on campus. He’s not a teacher.

Fasani would be a good pick for Del Oro; however, he would be an off campus guy as he is not a teacher. He wanted this job 3 years ago but was told no because of it. Del Oro has never had an off campus head football coach. That may change, but who knows. They do have a quality guy teaching on campus who is fairly young, was a head coach at another school (River Valley) for 2 years and got into the playoffs, and played 4 years of college football. If DO wants an on campus coach they would not go wrong with this guy. Fasani would be a great pick as offensive coordinator.

Im really surprised Chris Nixon hasn't landed one of these jobs. Not sure of where he has been interested and if it just hasn't worked out, but you can't question his success and his removal at EG isn't something that should hang around his neck

Correct he was hung out to dry and should get another opportunity elsewhere. Availability of teaching jobs could be an issue.

I think he requires a teaching position and there isn't one being offered at some of the prior schools.
Rumor has it the younger DO guy is a front runner for Antelope???
Not sure on this but does Placer Unified have competitive pay with surrounding Districts?
I have heard not but I am not in the know!
This may hold some local experienced coaches back?

Roseville High School district which is the district Antelope is in takes all years of service as a teacher. It also is the highest paying district in the Sacramento, El Dorado and Placer Counties.

You think they'd hire a guy who quit after 2 years? In light of controversy past few years - coach suspensions, sexual misconduct by DC, ineligible player - DO needs a quality guy regardless of teacher status, Fasani is their guy if he'll take it.

Parry is the current DC. Great dude. I assume ex-DC is Birch.

Don't know the reasons for removal, but heard great things about his teams. Are there other equally qualified candidates in area?

You do not have the success DO has had without quality coaches top to bottom. I can think of multiple guys on an off campus that would be solid head coaches. The board speculation is fun to read and contribute too but the accuracy is not always consistent with what actually happens. One critique about Del Oro is that nepotism and who you know often influences hiring decsions rather than hiring the most qualified candidate. Just look at the faculty as it is loaded with DO alumni and some faculty members are related. The prior postings on this thread imply that it is going to be an on campus coach as there is no teaching job attached to the position as Jeff Walters is not leaving. I assume that the prior post are from veteran board members, parents, teachers and a few coaches that are on the DO staff. I doubt there are many administrators chiming in. The school is under new leadership and obviously administration has a different idea or is at least willing to look at outside candidates. This is evident by the job posting that just went live on edjoin. Looks to me like they are looking for a single subject candidate and are going to make a spot on staff if the right candidate applies. Knowing the history of DO, if I am a Chris Nixon or Joe Cattolico type coach the first question I ask is who is on the hiring panel? If it is not a well balanced panel then do not waste your time.

Agree with decoydan. From EdJoin: Salary Info: $3,831 - $4,431 (coaching stipend - if also teaching, placement on Certificated Salary Schedule is based on previous full time, fully credentialed teaching experience).

Notice "if also teaching" which to me implies that they are open to an off-campus hire.
