The Peninsula Athletic League, in the main, comprises 17 San Mateo County public schools as regular members. Those in the San Mateo Union High, Sequoia Union High, South San Francisco Unified and Cabrillo Unified (Half Moon Bay High) districts will begin some outdoor, non-contact sports very soon. The four schools in the Jefferson Union High district will not. They have opted out. The Jefferson schools (Oceana, Westmoor, Terra Nova and Jefferson) will sit on the sidelines while their PAL peers go forward as the pandemic eases. Reasons for that decision have not been made public. Students, alumni, community members, coaches and parents in that district must be wondering why they continue to support it with their taxes, loyalty and overall commitment as the rest of the PAL moves ahead without them. It's a distinct black eye any way you care to look at it.

JUHSD may come out looking smart in all of this. While many leagues, districts and schools are working through the 11th hour to try and get something / anything going, that entire district has already turned the page. Sure it hurts for the seniors but the ultimate decision to play isn't in the district's hands anyways.

Jefferson district's trustees are meeting today. Outdoor athletics may be on their agenda. Unclear right now.

Update: Agenda does include such a discussion. It blames PAL for creating a new football schedule without consulting the district. A main reason, however: The district had already opted out of playing the sport. Weird buck-passing.

Latest: Terra Nova and Jefferson (the two football schools in the JUHSD) are seeking to return to the limited PAL schedule next month.

Terra Nova and Jefferson programs waiting for district teachers' union to agree to allow conditioning to begin March 8. Nothing is certain but there is a ray of hope.

New PAL football schedule shows TN and Jeff playing games on March 19. We shall see if that actually occurs.

Tough one for the Tigers tonight...they'll bounce back, they always do! Kudos to their staff for even playing football on a month's notice.

On a side note, those guys in Daly City are doing a WHALE of a job! The fact they were able to not only rally the troops on three weeks notice but are 2-0 against a perennial Bay Division FACTOR in Aragon and the runner up in the Ocean from last year is a testament to whoever the hell calling the shots up in Fogtown and his staff. Just unreal stuff. Not sure if staffs get awarded but they certainly should be in the mix.

Andddddd, Jefferson upsets Aragon on the road.

Again, more kudos. By the way, it would not be a shock if some frustrated AAA athletes with nowhere to play slipped across the county line to Jefferson very soon. Why not? Sometimes, the grass (or artificial turf) really is greener elsewhere.

I could definitely see that. They’re playing ball over there that’s for damn sure.
