McClatchy beat a 17-5 Monterey Trail team last night 76-61 to tie Laguna Creek for the Metro League title at 11-1. Monterey Trail was 8-4 in the league losing twice to Laguna Creek and McClatchy, but having an excellent season and will be very competitive in the SJS sections.

McClatchy's (24-3 overall) three losses for the season are by a combined total of eight points: two point loss to California; four point loss to Laguna Creek; and two point loss to Davis.

For the Davis game last Monday per the Davis Enterprise newspaper, McClatchy was ice cold in shooting: "The first half was a Blue Devil clinic, as the locals committed zero fouls and held the visitors to 0 for 13 beyond the arc." If McClatchy hits one or two more baskets, the game might of ended differently.

For the other two losses against California and Laguna Creek, Joe Davidson's article in the Sacramento Bee reported, "McClatchy was undone by poor 3-point shooting in its two losses, each a 3-for-17 night. When the Lions play defense and hit 3s, they’re a difficult out."

Thus, with respectable shooting McClatchy could have gone undefeated this season. But that's why you play the game, and any team with a bad shooting night is suspectable to losing.

For SJS D1 seeding St. Mary's should be an easy #1 seed. #2 seed should be a toss-up between Oak Ridge and McClatchy. Both have similar MaxPreps rankings, but McClatchy did beat Woodcreek earlier in the season, and Oak Ridge lost to Woodcreek during the season.
