Looking Forward to See Sac State

Always a nice perk when a coach is courted for another job.

Are you surprised he stayed at Cal?
I'm surprised there never seems to be a shortage of money at Oregon and I suspect the grade requirements are lower, making recruiting easier.

Not really much less pressure job then UW or UO and sounds like he got some concessions from the administration that he wanted which as long he wins 7-8 games a year with those concessions it’s a decent gig…….his buyout is still 7 million so if it’s goes south Cal isn’t into it for too much money

I read an article and the only confirmed source was Wilcox himself. If I'm not mistaken, Wilcox is a U of O alum. Always a lot of grey area in what was offered vs what was turned down and why. Good news for Cal if Wilcox got everything he wanted and more from Oregon and turned it down. I'm sure there are more than one side to this and we won't ever know the full truth.

Oregon hired Lanning, who was the DC for Georgia, over the weekend. 35 years old and you're the head coach of U of O. Not a bad career trajectory.

I don’t pretend to know Wilcox’ motivations or aspirations and w/o knowing any of that I am a bit surprised. IMO CAL is a gig with limitations and a low ceiling as far as FBS power 5 and PAC12 programs go.

Due to numerous factors, CAL isn’t ever likely to be a consistent contender for PAC12 titles let alone ever be in the running for a Nat’l title.

Even though they haven’t won a Nat’l title in their history, Oregon has a much better shot at being in the mix for them. And has appeared in a couple title games. And has 6 conference titles under their belt since CAL last won one.

With USC likely returning to prominence soon, CAL seems destined to be an after thought. A middling program.

I can’t see them becoming more successful than UCLA, UW, Stanford, AZST or even Utah. They have recruiting challenges those other programs don’t have, except for maybe Stanford and CAL seems forever mired in their Bay area shadow.

Reports are out that Wilcox turned down the Oregon job so it is safe to say he is staying at Cal which closes that door for Taylor for now.

I believe this to be great news for Sac State football. And just might keep Coach Taylor in SAC for a few more seasons at least, if that wasn’t already going to be the case.

Hopefully they can keep Coach Thompson around a while longer too, and most the remaining staff.

Early signing day is 36 hours away. Hopefully we get a lot more good news in the form of another excellent recruiting class.

One of the concessions JW is getting with his extension is a loosening admissions so he can cast a wider recruiting net which will look more like the early/middle Tedford years when Cal was landing top 25 classes year in and year out, he is also getting a larger salary pool for assistants, a team dedicated physician, Cal was literally a few basic special teams plays away last year from being 3-1 and lost 4 games by under a score 3 of those they had double digit leads, so it’s not like they got their asses handed to them…..they aren’t that far off from being more competitive

Stanford is garbage last few years no one is living in their shadow last 3 years that roster has glaring holes all over it, ucla likely losing Chip, Az state is a dirty program that is in upheaval with Daniels rumored to be leaving, UW is in transition with their worst recruiting class coming in, and Utah will always be solid because of Coach Whittingham……but the Pac 12 Is soft and doesn’t take much improvement to make a run

I hadn’t researched or read anything about the potential terms of their extension negotiations, so thanks for that.

I agree that they could make an impact. But I still don’t see that program having much of a ceiling. Even if they surpass the other middling programs of the PAC12, I don’t see them surpassing Oregon, USC or Utah.

As for my Stanford comment, it wasn’t so much recent success as fandom. Like how the Raiders and A’s lived in the shadows of the Niners and Giants respectively. CAL might be better than Stanford on the field here and there, but it doesn’t have the same fanbase or the same reputation and clout as a university. Thus it lives in Stanford’s shadow. I don’t see that changing either.
