We all know that Oak Ridge has great bigs withiut no guard play with McCoy who transferred to down south. No one to give them the ball this year!!!!!!!!!

Go figure that McClatchy lost to St. Ignatius by 4 points, and Oak Ridge beat St. Ignatius by 2 points last week. One would have expected Oak Ridge to beat McClatchy on Oak Ridge's home court or be a closer game. Anybody go to the game to describe if McClatchy played great or if Oak Ridge had an off night?

If McClatchy ever puts it all together they will be a tough out at the end of the season. So far in games Ive watched they are very careless defensively, reaching/fouling and being undisciplined. If I remember correct when they won the D1 state 2 yrs ago they also started off that season very slow, figured it out towards the end, and then made the great run to the state title.
They were my upset special pick in the SJS D1 to begin the season and I still hold out hope that they figure it out. Sounds like the Oakridge game may have been a step in the right direction.

Oak Ridge has no guards this year McCoy down south. They have no chance without guard play. I know you seen that when CN beat them at Laney College.

RespectBB:
You are right about Oak Ridge. It takes more than a huge front line to play basketball against a fast pace team, like McClatchy or other fast pace teams.

Northbay:
I agree completely with your comments. I watched McClatchy play against West Campus in the championship game of the Davis tournament three weeks ago. McClatchy barely won by 4 points, but McClatchy made a lot of careless errors, reach in fouls, missed layups, undisciplined, playing wildly, and two starters (Clark and Hall) fouled out of the game. So hopefully they are on the right track, especially when (if) Richelle Turney becomes eligible in early January 2017.

McClatchy plays Sacred Heart Cathedral in the West Coast Jamboree next week, 12/28. That will be another test.

IMO having good bigs in HS is a luxury.
Having good guards is a necessity.

That is so true. But you could have both but if players only want to win when they personally score the most points the selfish environment will eventually doom the team. There is not enough said about the importance of good accountable leadership and team unity. Just watch Clovis West play and you'll get an example of team unity and great chemistry on the court. Then watch the teams that are not on their level and notice the selfishness, forced shots, poor ball movement, bad attitudes, selective passing, poor decision making, and predictability. And notice the coaches who think they are improving when they struggle in the tough tournament play and then dominate easy league play. Then get quickly bounced out of the post season because they never worked to improve the areas they needed to improve. They just got the false sense of confidence they gained by soundly beating inferior opponents only to get a reality check when the level of play returned back to competitive opponents. The coach is the leader, like the President they set the tone. The better coaches don't play favorites. And they don't permit bully clicks, and selfishness. They do whatever it takes to help the players develop their skill level, confidence, basketball IQ, and team unity. Those teams win championships. The others at best have good seasons and may win league but not much after that.

Keep in mind those 4 seniors on Clovis West have played together year round on the same team since 4th grade. I'm not sure you're gonna find many teams with that familiarization around. The type of offense run is predicated on LOTS of ball movement to be successful and it's a must that all players in the floor are interchangeable

I can agree with that. But there is not a team out there that can't improve themselves as a team and individuals. You can't make excuses you have to make improvements. Despite how long you have been playing together there is no excuse for average players to play selfish ball and only want to win if they are the reason based on them scoring the most points. Clovis West has been playing together longer no doubt that helps. But their unselfish play is why they are the number 1 team in the nation on my ranking system. It is also one of the main things that separates them from the teams currently playing at the level slightly under them IMO.

Well, I think the dribble drive offense, that was originated in the Fresno area, gives so many variations of options that if run right it's a system that dictates unselfish play and rewards good passers, distributors and good movement. It forces you to be unselfish. CW really has a five guard offense. Pinewood runs something similar although they're not as big or fast as CW.

Those are excellent points. Pinewood & Clovis West have two very good coaches. But regardless to what offensive system you're running, it's a no brainer, if someone is open and you dont have a good shot, or a lane to drive, the ball should be immediately swung to the open player. Not having players look at who the person is and if they are in competition with that player decide to pass to anyone else beside the team mate they don't like or are competing against. Or just forcing a bad shot up because you are in the paint. More times than not the ball gets turned over because when you respect the game you get rewarded. And when you disrespect the game you are punished. Obviously this is not the type of ball that is going on with the top level teams. But I will say it appears to be popular with every level below the top. Just about everything you do will work when your team is clearly better than another team. But to even have a chance to upset a better team you have to play unselfish team ball so you can get good looks and cut down on the turnovers.

Everyone talking about offense but its defense wins championships. What team can play great man to man to rush shootera of the 3 point line???? Good press is another key but not as man to man.

That is a myth I squashed in my book "Win Anyway". Yes I will agree defense does indeed win championships some of the time. But the team that scores the most points wins the championship every time defense or not. So I say you can't put it all on one side of the ball.

That is why the Raiders were a long shot to win the Super Bowl before Carr picked up the questionable injury. Hopefully it is not serious. The Raiders defense and offense have to be respected to increase their chances. Simply put........ you need a good offense and defense to increase the odds of your success IMO.

Sjbasket..
Is this the same offense that Walberg used to run at the Fresno JC...I used to see him blow teams away at SJCC games. ..back in the day....
I know he coaches the CW boys....so the girls run the same offense?

That is exactly correct. I would assume the 5 seniors running the same offense together for 5+ years. Keep in mind, you do have to hit those open looks to keep it going well

Does anyone know where coach Wallberg learn that defense and offense that he runs??? I do and I know him personally and where he learned from.

Like+1 for "team that scores the most points wins".
Like-1 for the Carr reference.

I like the Raiders and Carr, so I wasn't attempting to knock Carr or the Raiders. My point was if the Raiders don't get things together on the defensive side of the ball they'll be putting a lot on Carr and the Raider's offense to win each playoff game in a shoot out. And now with Carr out at least 4 weeks things just got even more difficult.

I don't really follow ftball. At the same time I read your post, I happened to see the re-run of carr's injury on tv for the first time. It reminded me when I saw joe theisman's injury. I like how you simplified what CW is doing and hope they keep winning...so disciplined in their system. Reminds me of De La Salle's young teams-anybody ever see their play where they roll the ball through the defense from the top of the key to the post for an assist?

I appreciate those who are accountable, discipline, unselfish, and work well towards a common goal in harmony. I don't see much value in buck passing, finger pointing, or excuse making. There is always a reason for success and failures. And all you can do is be big enough to share in the responsibility to work towards making the necessary changes to get better. Sometimes you have to take a serious look within and be real with yourself. Because everyone from the best to the worse have a lot of room for improvement.

And the Carr injury was so unfortunate. In a game where the Raiders were clearly picking the Colts defense apart using an excellent mix of run and pass play calling. Hopefully the team rallies hard around the backup quarterback and hold things down long enough for Carr to return if that is a realistic option at this point.

Hoopwilla,

I dont recall seeing that particular play. But again, true sports fans appreciate creativity and good well coached teams. I would gladly pay to see a Clovis West game and hope they film a few to cherish the memories years from now when they reflect back.
