Her season-ending injury has a cascading series of impacts, both for her, for the Mitty program and beyond. It would not be out of line to suggest that, in the pantheon of outstanding female basketball players produced in Northern California over the last 40 or so years, she has to be ranked among the best we've seen here, at least so far. She is a stunning prospect, tall, quick, agile, selfless and coachable by all accounts, one of the finest in the nation to be sure. Able to play any position, she is one of those rare basketball gems who, by her very presence on both ends of the floor, combined with her athletic abilities, makes her teammates better. That's the hallmark of greatness at any level of the sport. Losing her for the rest of this season _ and who knows how long heading into the next _ is a huge blow to all concerned. Without her, Mitty becomes very good, not great, not top-tier, not a nationally-ranked, elite powerhouse. She is that good, that dominant in so many ways. Oh, lest we forget, she is also a fabulous softball player, a smooth shortstop who is a college prospect in that sport too. We can only hope that she will fully recover from this injury and return to the basketball court (and maybe the softball field) sometime during the 2025-26 school year.

Pick a good academic school as you never know when it could end.

Sue Phillips has been playing a top nine that has no seniors. Without junior Wolizcko, Mitty will rotate 8 players that will return next season. If McKenna returns next season, the Monarchs will be loaded. Actually, it will force the two sophs and the freshman to take on bigger roles which force them to improve their respective games. Archbishop Mitty also has three good senior guards on this year's team, too.

Statewide CIF open title? yeah, agree. NorCal open title? that injury is tough, but to say a team as deep and talented and well coached as that has "zero" chance? Very premature. Gimme some of that action.
That’s not what he or she is saying.. Mitty is still basically a lock to represent NorCal but they are saying NorCal has zero chance of winning open and they are right.

3 good senior guards that don't play? Must be tough...

Their JV would be a good varsity team in most leagues.

The level of talent and coaching at Mitty is off the charts. Our JVs are 12-1. Our only loss? To Mitty's freshman team, by 16. We scrimmaged their JVs and lost 56-8. If they had pressed for more than three possessions, they could have named the score.

It's a common mistake. If you visit any number of gyms in the Southern Section, banners there declare "CIF Champion" when, in fact, they are actually referring to section titles, not actual state crowns.

From my chats with coaches from the CCS...

The general consensus...

If there are 12 good incoming freshman in the CCS, Mitty is automatically getting 8 of them. Add to that my observation...that if any of those 4 turn out to be REALLY good? She is getting poached by Mitty for her Jr/Sr yrs.

It's also well known that Sue will hoard as much talent as she can. Having backups that get to play no meaningful minutes that would be starters/all leaguers?...MVPs? In other leagues. Maybe even All Leaguers on fellow WCAL teams.

This has been a CCS/WCAL problem for awhile , but now with Mitty having National aspirations it's become a problem for all Northern Calif as Mitty has now poached the best player from BOD, Heritage and the best young player(last yr) from Vallejo.

Clay is 100% correct..no one wants to be in the Open except Mitty. Has to be frustrating for (non Mitty) Open teams to be 1 and done in NorCal Open while watching the 2nd, 3rd, 4th? place teams of their leagues make long postseason runs in lower divisions.

AM had two forwards last season from Los Gatos & Burlingame. I am attempting to recall the transfer from Vallejo? Maybe I didn't know that they player came from Vallejo. Who are you referencing?

I've seen Mitty quite a bit, and while I'd still make them the favorite to win NorCal, it's not a lock. As talented as the team is, it was built around McKenna. Her defensive presence allowed her teammates all kinds of freedom to take chances. On offense, she commanded a double team in the post, leaving shooters wide open, and created countless extra possessions with her offensive rebounding. With the jumper that she added, she pulled opposing centers out of the lane. All of that is irreplaceable.

Hillz spot on as usual.

Who can give them an honest run? I’m not seeing it. A competitive game sure but who has the team to actually beat them in Northern California? They are still deep with D1 players , size and athleticism. And a championship coach. I’d be very surprised. The only team that comes to mind for me is Clovis West and even that’s a stretch in my opinion. They have the size and guard play to hang. But hang is a lot different than legit shot to win. We’ll see. I’m taking Mitty.

Maybe just have Mitty as the only Open Division team in the NorCals and have all the rest of the top NorCal teams in D1, and extend down--LOL! That would give the other top NorCal teams a chance at a D1-D2 state CIF title, and make the NorCal section teams more competitive against the SoCal teams--never happen though.

I think teams have a chance against Mitty now. You have to have a great night from three, get a few key calls in your favor, and have Mitty miss some shots, but it's possible.

Before? Well, a 20-point loss isn't exactly a goal most coaches set, but it was the best you could hope for.
