McManus named new football coach at CN

I won't lie. When this was first brought up on here, I thought it had no chance of happening.

What do you think is the ceiling for CN?

Cardinal Newman made it official today with the school's press release.

In this alumni's opinion a game changing hire.

Arguably the biggest high school football hire in the country.

What is the expectation? Are De La Salle and Pittsburg on notice or is beating Marin Catholic enough?

Again, I’m very curious as to what and how Frank is going to do to get guys to Santa Rosa.

Do they have a boarding program? Neither BART nor CalTrain go there. Mater Dei was getting kids from Bakersfield to San Diego and everywhere in between but there are no bridges people need to cross in SoCal.

Happy for CN. They are a football school and they are acting like one, and hiring like one. Absolutely no misunderstanding that they want to be great.( they already are very good and have been for years). I commend CN, wish my alma mater felt the same

Will be interesting. Will show how good he is as a coach. CN doesn't have the pool of talent that they have coming into MD. May not be the impact many think. Probably will improve the draw of some players in region. Not the ta;ent draw of DLS. Should be more competitive with Marin Catholic in league and others at regional level for their size of school.

Another point is we may see them upping their strength of nonleague schedule. I like their league as it is and for prep fans we may see some interesting regional power nonleague matchups with other sections. If he gets the dedication level to increase (not saying it isn't) but they will need to increase level of play to get to another of level. I look at coaches like retired coach Randy Blankenship who won at the high levels in another section and turned an average Aptos program into competing for titles at an A league as a model. He installed a new offense, increased buy in by players and toughened up the program. Got them winning. Cardinals are already a winning program but they have opportunity for an incremental improvement. Size of the school and talent draw will be a constraint against the state powers. Would like to see them paly more WCAL top teams and SJS section powers. Maybe a game against Folsom is in the future.

I would love to see CN schedule the "powers" from other Northern California sections.

Folsom, Serra..etc should definitely be added if possible.

CN plays in a strong league (with 3 NCS Open participants last yr) so a strong preseason schedule makes sense to get them battle tested for the games that count. (League and playoffs)

Embrace the Open...
Try and get better to compete...

Go Cards! 💪🏈😊

Do you think CN should try the dormitory route in terms of talent from out of the immediate vicinity of SR, Windsor, ? As has been pointed out, sustaining a certain talent level is vital moving up in football stature. Do you think the Administration at CN would consider it?

Not in favor of installing dorms for athletic purposes or mining other programs for transfers. That is the fare of an outlaw program.

Looks who is back... But for some reason I have a different ID. I'm a mess.
But huge hire. Thanks for the kind words and Go Newman! If you think about Newman Football they are closing the gap on east bay teams. The took a very good SRV team to the wire last year in the Open. Mcmannus won't get LA type kids but if the Anderson brothers from Windsor played at Newman the last few years they would have been battling Pitt. They aren't that far away. You get a few transfers and pull some kids who are dealing with messy SR school district issues and they will be competing with DLS. No doubt in my mind. Might not beat them but they will belong.

Wouldn’t have to be strictly for athletics. Exchange students from various countries and parts of the Bay Area and state can use them. I know Bellarmine used to have boarding students. I’ve heard Riordan has or does. General student use. Daily commutes from certain parts of the Bay Area could be inconvenient, to say the least. I’m not talking about a strictly athletic dorm in the D1 college sense

Don’t bet the house on it. Their league schedule does them no favors. If you wants to build up your calluses to do battle with DLS, you need to find a way to join the WCAL. Maybe replace SHC.

This is not likely going to happen. I’ve heard this suggested for nearly 50 years.

Just do not see it ever happening, although the Novato Narrows expansion is almost complete 60 years later so there is a slight chance 🤣

The Cardinal Newman girls basketball team looked into potentially joining the WCAL some years back and had the backing of both Mitty and SHC on the idea.

Couple of issuea...
1...the travel just simply wasn't doable.
2. The different sections was a problem.

Ultimately it was decided it couldn't be done.

Yeah I scanned the obits in SR and EDH and didn’t see him in there so I figured he was still around 😂.
I surely thought on the way back for the miracle at Moreau he got took a wrong turn down east 14th and got taken advantage of by one of the birds on the stroll

Riordan does and SI is building them

SI is building what? They just tore down the building that used to house the Jesuit teachers 40 years ago for additional education space. It's similar to what St. Francis has built.
I had heard SI is building housing, that's what I get for listening to the rumor mill...

May I ask you, as a CN alum, where does the school draw most of its student body from? The easy answers would be SR and Windsor, but I’d guess there’s some from Cotati, Rohnert Park, Sebastopol, Healdsburg . Petaluma maybe?

Sonoma County mostly...although some Napa and Mendo county kids occasionally. Im trying to think if CN gets kids from Marin and I can't think of any off the top of my head (at least recently).

With the closing of Rincon Valley Christian there aren't alot of options for the families that want a Christian private school other than St Vincent and Marin Catholic north of the GG bridge in the area.
