Mitty vs Ontario Christian

Final: Mitty 59, Ontario Christian 34.
Congratulations Monarchs on representing Nor Cal and on winning the championship of the Nike TOC’s toughest division (Vincent Canazzaro) of the tournament. Mitty went 4-0, beating Ontario Christian, Mater Dei, Clackamas (Oregon), and George Rogers Clark (New York). Mitty now 9-0.

Mitty is about to 30 piece everyone in Norcal in the State Open Playoffs.

What can be done to equal this disparity of talent going forward?

Only thing I can think of is some school in the Sac/Stockton area needs to follow the same Mitty playbook and start poaching EVERY good player in the area. Sac, Stockton, Eldorado hills, Auburn, Modesto....everywhere within 70 miles or so like Mitty does.

Or...

Go the international route...on campus international housing (something like Riordan has) and just go recruit the best players in the world and give them tuition and housing.

With the Mitty reach now "reaching" into the rosters of their fellow OPEN contenders in Northern California...no school is safe from the poaching and we are now seeing the results.

So much for a competitive OPEN this year.

The blueprint for success has been the same for about 30 years: Build a club feeder program; fill in the gaps with elite recruits; have excellent coaching and support from the school; get lucky and find a star.

It takes work and time and devotion, and even then, you never know. The talent might not be there, the star might get hurt, you might play badly in a big game.

And of course, you don't get there by being an average coach, as coaching includes all of the above. Right, becool?

You can get there with a great recruiting machinery and and an above average coach…
I have said above average many times…
Nothing wrong with a solid B…
northbaybbguru has some solid points…
My question if others go national or international are we taking prep school…
How far before the state steps in…
Why did LIL not go to the TOC?

If you have a top five team in the nation -- 13,000 schools -- and consistently excel, I think it's probably better than a B, or above average.

And the recruiting machinery is part of coaching, as is everything about any program. A high school coach at Mitty's level is like the CEO of a small business. It's a lot more than Xs and Os, even if you're coaching at the high school down the street.

Mitty's dominance of Northern California is due to Sue Phillips, plain and simple. And even when another team might be better, the road to the state title game always goes through Mitty.

---------

The CIF is pretty hard on international transfers since Modesto Christian brought in a ton of boys a while back. I don't think that's viable in CIF.

----------

As for LuHi, or any school, going to the same tournaments every year becomes routine -- and thus not that much fun, or ROI. We don't expect teams to come to the Jamboree every year, though we're thankful many do. Some years they may want to go somewhere else, for whatever reason. The Phoenix trip is hugely expensive, even if some expenses are taken care of. Twenty years ago, it was $8,000 to $10,000 when you added it all up.

Coach Phillips might have hangs ups according to different folks you talk to but so do other coaches. I will say that I've seen a lot of other schools underachieve with rosters that Coach Phillips would have dominated with. At the end of the day she deserved credit as a coach whether you like her or not. Mitty is Mitty because of her.

And since 2013 11 Open Championship
Have been held. How many has Mitty
Taken. All the advantages Mitty has
And they have how many open titles.?
What is the one consistent piece?
They should have 4 or 5 with the players
They had. Other coaches where are you on this?
Nobody????

@becool: This Forum is called NORcalpreps and Mitty has 4 of those Open championships in a row, working on 5.

Years ago, SHC had many of the advantages that Mitty has now in a long term exceptional coach, a feeder club program, being private so able to pull kids from broad geographic area, and they had a nice run of championships and #1 National ranking. SMS earned and enjoyed something close to that for awhile. But appreciate how the process to become that is exceptionally long and exceedingly rare. And then eventually it changes.
