Crazy story and terrible ending for Narbonne's high school girls program.

Narbonne has wins over St. Mary's-Berkeley and Lincoln-Stockton this year.

Sad!!! I know there are rules. And while I didn't agree with what happened with BOD last year, I understood why it needed to happen. But over uniforms? Why not suspend the coach for the rest of the season? I am sure something else could have been done.

The problem with the rules as drafted for the sections and all the way up is that they are created by committees with little or no rule making expertise. Someone has an ax to grind, a bunch of verbiage is created, and no one knows exactly what it means, or if and how it's going to be enforced. Since it would take some time and thought to create proportional sanctions for various offenses, they just go directly to "forfeit".

I thought booting BOD for an extra game was extreme. But doing it over some pink edging around the numbers? Wow.

I think there is also an element of ego that becomes involved when otherwise little noticed administrators get thrust into the spotlight and get a lot of attention for a harsh, nonsensical decision. They get beaten up so often when there is some wiggle room (e.g., a disallowed transfer lawyers up) that it probably feels pretty good to get a little payback.

Can you imagine if all the rules was in-forced !?!? theirs rules being abused everyday !!!! LET THE KIDS PLAY
WHO PICKS THE COMMITTEES ????

The big problem in the CIF each section has different rules. The Bylaws should be the same and just a committee to govern the laws. But we all know that will never happen because each section wants to be different then each other.

So you can suffer a severe penalty for supporting cancer (something far larger than basketball)?

Boy, you gotta love the leadership who makes that call.

So Narbonne wore the same uniforms the week before and won a game against University, but they didn't have to forfeit that one since University didn't protest that they were wearing pink on their uniforms. That must mean that View Park coach Corry Thomas did file a protest with the section because they wore pink on their jerseys to honor cancer victims. Very classy move.

It started with the coach on the other team (View Park) most protest always starts with a coach. I believe winning is everything but winning at all cost is the mindset of a coward. Any person that would protest a fair contest based on coloring on a uniform is a coward and the school AD and or school Administrators that allowed something like that to be protested says a lot about the school and its program. The adults involved are not the kind of people that should be influencing young minds and then to have the controversy be something that showed support for cancer victims, WOW. Like someone else said about BO getting penalized last year, I also thought that was crazy but this takes ridiculousness to a whole nother level.

Or how about this? Maybe a Section official could have pointed out to Narbonne during warmups that the uniforms were illegal, and thus you have no problem at all.

The problem with rules is that you have to enforce them ... presumably this rule sprung from some other issues in the past, and was designed to prevent those issues from arising again. But then keeping the rule means it has to be enforced, if anyone is so focused on winning that they need to file a protest over that.

But then again, you have an athletic director and a coach whose responsibility it is to read and know the rules. Did anyone at Narbonne bother to read the rules? (How many coaches, at any level, reading this have read a rule book cover to cover?)

I think every single player on every single team that makes the
Norcal and Socal CIF playoffs announced Sunday should wear
pink ribbons for the Socal and Norcal Playoffs that start next week...

What do you do then CIF????

jazzpt55,

I totally agree with you !

I have a problem with folks who don't stand their ground when authorities misuse their power. We amend and bend rules all the time. Humans do not always get it right. Obviously those with power get it wrong from time to time, and this appears to be one of those times. Cancer and human life is much bigger than "rules" or basketball.

That is why the Win Anyway philosophy is so important. You must always consider each circumstance individually.

We can't allow the ego factor to be a factor. I guess the big boys can now feel good about themselves.

It would be nice if someone was adult enough to admit they made an error in judgment. But, I guess we shouldn't hold our breath waiting on the egotistic to tap into a higher level of self esteem.

Decision has been reserved; statement from the CIF

SACRAMENTO - As a federation, CIF governance allows each of the 10 CIF Sections to operate with a large degree of autonomy and independence as our rules and regulations begin with local control. Each CIF Section has its own governance structure and board that govern local control standards for the schools they serve.

"For several years I have strongly urged all 10 CIF sections to review their rules and regulations in order to make appropriate changes to bylaws and the associated penalties that do not fit the infraction," stated CIF State Executive Director Roger L. Blake. "I am extremely pleased with the action taken this morning by the CIF Los Angeles City Section Appeal Panel to reinstate Narbonne High School to their Section playoffs as this is an example of a penalty that was not appropriate. I hope this is just a first step by the Los Angeles City Section leadership to review all of their bylaws and penalties."

Great to see accountability after making the wrong initial decision. It would have been unfair to punish a team that was honoring a good cause.
