1. De La Salle (4-0)
Derrick Blanche rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Toa Faavae added two rushing scores as the Spartans held off St. Mary’s-Stockton 38-35. De La Salle trailed 21-17 at the end of the third quarter, but De La Salle scored the next 14 points to take a 31-21 lead. Eventually, it recovered an onside kick for the win. The Spartans travel to El Cerrito this week.
2. Serra (1-2)
The Padres will travel to St. Ignatius on Friday to begin WCAL action. They have won 14 straight WCAL games and are 31-2 over the last 33 league games.
3. Folsom (3-1)
The Bulldogs showed out in a matchup featuring the top two expected teams in the SFL with a 51-14 win over Rocklin. It was 10-7 Folsom in the second quarter, but a Ryder Lyons touchdown run and a touchdown pass from Lyons to Jameson Powell helped break the game open. Lyons threw another touchdown and ran for more than 100 yards in the win. Theo Greule had a sack and the defense grabbed two interceptions. Next week’s game is in question as Davis has forfeited the September 27 matchup.
4. Pittsburg (3-1)
Marley Alcantara went 26-for-33 for 212 yards and two touchdowns to RJ Mosley and Kenneth Ward as the Pirates were within 14 in the fourth quarter against St. John Bosco en route to losing 35-14. Jewelous Walls had a team high 10 tackles. PIttsburg is off this week before hosting Los Gatos on October 4.
5. San Ramon Valley (4-0)
Rhett Thompson went 10-for-13 for 195 yards and five touchdowns and completed passes to six different receivers in a 51-14 win over McClymonds. Evan Economos had 89 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Marco Jones had 12 tackles and Kaleb Pleis had two sacks. The Wolves travel to Hayward this week.
6. Rocklin (3-1)
Derek Keeley ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, but Rocklin couldn’t keep up with Folsom in a 51-14 loss. Mavrik Collins had 55 receiving yards and seven tackles. The Thunder will host Jesuit this Friday. It also has Granite Bay and Oak Ridge at home later in the season.
7. St. Francis,Mountain View (2-1)
The Lancers had a bye week following its loss at De La Salle. They return to the field to host Bellarmine on Friday. St. Francis will play three of its final four games on the road against St. Ignatius, Valley Christian and Riordan.
8. Grant (3-2)
The Pacers were in a scoreless tie after the first quarter against Destiny Christian, but led 10-0 at halftime and eventually won 30-12. Luke Alexander threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns and Koby Shabazz finished with 153 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Tyson Griffin Jr. had a touchdown run and touchdown catch. Grant will host Lincoln-San Diego this week.
9. Los Gatos (4-0)
Los Gatos led Mountain View 21-0 after the first quarter in a 62-6 Thursday night win. The Wildcats averaged 14 yards per play with 222 rushing yards and 191 passing yards. Grayson Dolsak had three rushing touchdowns and Scotty Brennan found Owen Panu for a 45 yard touchdown. Los Gatos is off this coming week before an October 4 meeting with Pittsburg.
10. St. Mary’s-Stockton (2-2)
Jaden Galvan threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns passes to Kenneth Moore III and Ivan Huerta. Overall, Moore finished with 139 total yards and the Rams’ speed was on display in pushing De La Salle more than anyone so far this season in a 38-35 loss. This week, St. Mary’s will host Bishop Amat.
11. Riordan (1-2)
Riordan was off with the rest of the WCAL schools and will start league play on Saturday against Sacred Heart Cathedral. During the bye week, junior quarterback Michael Mitchell, Jr. committed to Vanderbilt.
12. McClymonds (1-3)
The Warriors’ daunting early schedule wrapped up this week with a 51-14 loss to San Ramon Valley. Last year, McClymonds lost to the Wolves 35-7. Sharky Tamale and Desmond Sparks had rushing touchdowns for the Warriors. McClymonds is off this week and will return to action on October 4 against Berean Christian.
13. Soquel (2-2)
Soquel led Scotts Valley 42-3 at the half in a 63-3 win heading into their bye week. The Knights are back in action on October 4 against Palma and they are giving up 10 points per game with two Top 10 opponents and Valley Christian.
14. Liberty (3-1)
The Lions trailed Amador Valley 22-8 in the third quarter, but scored 26 of the final 32 points for a 34-28 win. Jaxon Bell rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns and added a seven yard touchdown catch. Liberty’s defense had three sacks and forced three turnovers. This week, Liberty will host Clayton Valley Charter.
15. St. Ignatius (2-1)
The Wildcats, with only a loss to San Ramon Valley, will get into WCAL play this week against two time defending champion Serra. In their two wins over Tamalpais and Cathedral Catholic, the Wildcats have given up 20 total points.
16. Cardinal Newman (4-0)
Cardinal Newman took control early against Bishop O’Dowd in a 56-0 win over the Dragons. Freshman quarterback Tino Retamoza threw for 145 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 88 yards and two scores. Jamari Gentry ran for a touchdown, caught two more touchdowns and finished with more than 200 total yards. The Cardinals host Pleasant Valley on Friday.
17. El Cerrito (4-0)
El Cerrito stayed undefeated with a 49-0 win over Campolindo heading into this week’s matchup with De La Salle. The Gauchos haven’t allowed more than 19 points in a game this season, which includes an opening win over Amador Valley.
18. Granite Bay (4-0)
Isaiah Ene rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown and had three catches for 103 receiving yards and a touchdown in a 30-17 win at Jesuit. Darnell Turner Jr. had a touchdown catch and returned an interception for a touchdown. The Grizzlies will host Oak Ridge on Friday in one of the top games of the week.
19. Downey (5-0)
Carson Lamb threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns with Joseph Ramirez being his top receiver at 180 yards and two scores in a 35-20 win over Edison-Stockton. The Knights have scored at least 34 points in each game this season. They are off this week before starting league action against Pitman on October 4.
20. Central Catholic (3-2)
Central Catholic ran for more than 300 yards, led by 201 yards and two touchdowns from Joey Alcutt, in a 25-14 win over Patterson. Alcutt has 600 yards and five touchdowns through half the season. This week, the Raiders will travel to Manteca in a big VOL matchup.
