RE: D2

Just as I suspected and have been preaching all yr long if anyone was paying attention....

The NBL(the entire north bay for that matter) was way down this year. Every NBL team (but Monty) lost in 1st round.
Overall in the NCS D2 is BY FAR the weakest level.
Monty got a favorable seeding and should advance to Norcals.....everyone else in North bay should lose next rd.
I'm curious to see how Marin Catholic and Justin-Siena do in D4 today...as I think they got favorable/too high seedings also.

D3 looks the strongest - 4 strong teams
D1 has the depth and - 3 strong teams
D4 is light but - 3 strong teams
D2 is the weak link with only 1 team

NCS needs an open division

  1. I actually think that they should stop letting teams petition up. the D3 isn't necessarily stronger than D4. and schools are just trying to maneuver and avoid other schools. Schools should compete by enrollment in the appropriate division. and then I don't like how some sections have open and some wait until after sections tournaments. It should be universal and run by CIF. They should also decide state champions first and then do a smaller final four or elite 8 tournament. to decide open or grand champion.
  2. because as of right now, if you are pulled into the open, and you get knocked out the first game, you can't compete in your division any more. Secondly, the D2 winner might not be the best D2 team.
just my thoughts. but what do i know?

for being a member since '05 you obviously havent been around much the last few seasons.. this topic has been addressed ad nauseam, with your points, while valid, beaten like a dead horse.

With that said, I'll stillllll bite, I agree that it should be more uniform, open in all sections or open in no sections, ability to move divisions allowed in all sections or none, similar start dates, similar game limitations, ect. However, I dont ever see them going to an extra tournament as more games are not necessarily a good thing for young athletes, and it severely limits spring sport athletes more than a late tourney run already does. Gotta cut the kids loose at some point.

I am not aware of any teams in NCS petitioning up. Carondelet, Miramonte, Salesian and St. Mary's Berkeley were all moved up due to competitive equity.

I think you can petition up but no one has. I was surprised that Newark took out Tamalpais, though ...

The CN boys team petitioned up to D2, presumably because it was a much easier road than D4 for boys. The CN boys did, but not the girls? It looks like the Sir Francis Drake & Elsie Allen girls also petitioned up to D3 this year, based on the "G-P16" notation on the NCS site.

Some of that makes sense. Cardinal Newman coasts home in D4 girls as long as it stays out of the Open, but St. Joseph Notre Dame is in D4 boys. But Drake and Elsie Allen fled Newman -- to draw O'Dowd, Salesian and Campo?

The MCAL did not look particularly strong this year. We played Montgomery in early December, and though they've presumably improved, they never got it going against Miramonte.

the CN boys did it because Bonfigli thought it was easier road to norcals. Its too bad because he would have got the 3 seed in D4 also...and with ST Joes definitely OPEN bound and possibly St Pats also, CN would have had a great chance to make a deep run in D4 norcals. I personally think the OPT UP decision will come back to haunt him.

As far as the girls in D4....
The girls won their D2 league(14-0) by an average margin of victory of 45 pts /game. Including running clocking D2 #2 seed Monty.... quite frankly, 2nd half of league gets real boring, and its frustrating (as a fan)watching those games, especially when they play sloppy and uninspired and still win by 30+........I for one and glad to see the new teams in D4.... And don't count out St Joes, Arcata and St Pats....they aren't bad....I think all 3 would beat Monty.
