NCS baseball: San Leandro shocks defending Division I champ Amador Valley

By Jimmy Durkin

SAN LEANDRO -- There was only one appropriate way for San Leandro High to respond after its 20-victory season was rewarded with the No. 14 seed in the North Coast Section Division I baseball playoffs: win.

The Pirates did that Tuesday at San Leandro Ball Park, upsetting No. 3 seed and defending Division I section champion Amador Valley 3-1.

Kevin Nava pitched a four-hitter and San Leandro (21-6) scratched out its runs with small ball to move on to the quarterfinals Saturday at No. 6 Foothill, which beat 11-seed Deer Valley 6-2.

Newark Memorial 3, Clayton Valley Charter 0: Junior William Traynor pitched a three-hit shutout as the No. 14 Cougars (17-8) upset the third-seeded Eagles (22-5) in the first round of the NCS Division II playoffs. Traynor finished with four strikeouts and also gave Newark Memorial its first run with an RBI triple in the fifth inning.

Hooper, DeMers, Gamboa & Bonfigli all had stellar ptiching performances in their respective NCS final victories this weekend. College Park will be moving up to D1 next season, so the 2015 D1 championship game could very well feature a dream matchup of 2 of the top hurlers in the state Hooper vs. DeMers.
