I completely disagree with the concept of the open but this proposal makes sense.

I question the word being used for criteria here: ability. Lets just make it easier. There are so many player rankings, tout sites out there grading individual players in their class. If you have players ranked on Rivals, ESPN, or Maxpreps, you play in Open.

The best should play the best no matter the enrollment. Sierra Canyon in D5 was an absolute joke. It still wouldn't have been fair if they made those kids play with one arm tied behind their backs. Last years SJBosco team was not a D2 level team with their "ability" as well as last year's Monte Vista team. Those teams need to play in Open and schools just need to get over the we want a trophy to justify our season lovefest.

A lot of the "rankings" are based upon the amount of talent on a team. Last year's SJBosco's team was a three man team and they did not play particularly well in the state finals. They had a lot more talent than Folsom but that game was a competitive game. Bishop Montgomery team last year was much better and more talented top to bottom than SJBosco.

This year, while Sierra Canyon had a national ranking, I believe Damien beats them by double digits. Damien was the best non-open team in the state finals this year. And the four teams that were picked ahead of SC and Damien for the socal state open were all loaded with talent too.

If the open is the "best of the best" then why call division 1- 5 state champions? (besides making the CIF more money). I personally prefer the model where you play in your enrollment division and have the option to move up.
