New Youth Sports Guidance

Will students, family and fans be able to attend these games ? With proper social distancing of course. That would be icing on the cake. But really happy for the kids right now. We can always watch the game via a stream.

Testing of all athletes and coaches once per week is going to be very difficult for school district budgets. Hopefully boosters can find a way to help defray costs.

Looks like the state is going to help with testing costs so that is good. I also imagine boosters/parents etc will help as well. Quick look at the map not every county is there yet.

In the CCS, both Monterey and San Benito counties can not start yet But all others are below the adjusted 14/100,000. But with rates continuing to drop I think most counties will get there with in the next couple weeks. This is by far the best news we have had since last year!!! Very happy for the schools and kids that want to play not only football but all outdoor sports this year.

Outdoor Playground Basketball?

It looks like you only need to do weekly testing if you are in the Purple teir. Red teir is only a recommendation to test.

every city and county in the bay has a free testing site. and if not insurance offers free testing or at least mine does and i have kaiser. where there is a will

From KSBW:

High-contact outdoor sports like football, basketball and rugby can also resume under that standard, but only if all coaches and players 13 and older get tested once per week. Test results must be available within 24 hours of competition.

Twenty-seven counties currently have case rates at or below 14 people per 100,000. The largest is Santa Clara county, which includes the city of San Jose. (Santa Clara county is at 14.0 this week.)

An additional 16 counties have case rates between 14 and 20 people per 100,000 and could soon meet the new standard. That includes Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and Fresno counties. (Monterey County is currently at 19.7 cases per 100,00...here is a site to see cases per 100,000)

The new guidelines take effect Feb. 26. They apply to all organized youth sports and recreation, including school- and community-sponsored programs, and privately-organized clubs and leagues, as well as adult recreational sports.

The guidance does not apply to collegiate or professional sports or to community events, such as marathons, half-marathons and endurance races.

Just heard during the Warriors' TV-cast that the Miami Heat are using COVID sniffing dogs for employees & fans entering the game at A-A Arena.
.......if I have my druthers I would prefer to be sniffed by Snoopy or Scooby do than have Nurse Ratchet shove a 8" swap ups nostril and touching the back of my eyeball !!

Obviously big news yesterday and HS football is in a better spot than it was when we woke up on Friday, Now the discussion turns to how to pull it off. Organized, well staffed programs should be able to handle it. Ones who have just been getting by might see these hurdles as too much. And then you have schools in counties that might never reach the magic 14 number.

Here are things that need to be figured out:

  • Testing process and checking how it goes
  • Making sure gear is ready
  • Ramping up for competition if conditioning has been lacking
  • Officials
Sure I'm missing a few, but those were the next steps I've come up with or heard about

Add to your list:

District approval...think we are going to be "surprised" by the number of school districts that will say "no"

Scheduling...how to fill out a X number of games schedule when districts are hesitant to make a go/no go decision

Rosters...there are areas (like Carmel) where some kids have a 45 minute to one hour ride just to get to school. Used to be easy to get to practice since it was right after school let out. If getting to practice is difficult, then how many players (or their parents who have to drive them to and from practice every day) just say no?

And I agree that the testing requirement is going to be a bear. I don't know a lot about the mechanics of testing but on the surface it doesn't seem like this will be an easy thing for schools to do.

There have been around 40 states who got through the Covid era and already played a year of football. And this was before any vaccine was available. Successful blue print is there. Absolutely no need to reinvent the wheel or over complicate things.
