Newman 51
Monty 41

Newman had lost to Monty in the Bret Callan tourney but keep in mind 3 players were just back from the football team one of which is probably the best player on the team. (damien Wallace). He ended up being the difference last night in what is always a great rivalry game.

Newman improves to 14-2 with those two losses to Monty and Mt Eden.

Thursday game at Windsor for sole possession of 1st place in the NBL.

Windsor Coach Taylor always has a good game plan and scout when they play CN.
Windsor best 2 players (2018 Smith twins) have good size(6'6) and skills.

I expect this game to be a battle to the end. My prediction? I'll take CN by 6 with 2017 G Cody Baker hitn the big shots in crunch time. CN pulls out the big win on Windsor's home court.

This should be a fun one. I think you're spot on with Windsor always playing CN tough. I think home court gets it done though.

I cant argue with you that you think Windsor gets it done at home. I think its coming right down to the end.
I just think that CN depth will be hard for Windsor to overcome especially if one of the windsor big 4 gets into foul trouble. Carlozzi needs to not get a bunch of dumb fouls like hes prone to. They cant afford to be shorthanded, hes got to play smart. He is a transfer from CN so hes always jacked up to play CN and he needs to control his emotions. The key for Windsor will be their guard play and how they slow down Baker and Wallace. I think windsors 3 bigs will be fine.

Newman looks to have a lot of depth and no real stars. (in the sense of guys playing at next level) Just a bunch of good HS players with Baker and Wallace emerging as the top guns. Sometimes those sort of teams are the kind that can surprise you.

Pretty close on the margin of victory northbaybbguru. Windsor is well coached and Travis is the BEST HS bball coach in the North Bay IMHO, but Newmans D kept them in the game until Wallace took over. He looked unstoppable at times. I'm assuming hes fully healed from his football injury.

I heard newman got blanked in the 1st qtr.... That won't happen again. I actually thought Newman would be rather average this year. But 16-2 right now and in the drivers seat isn't looking all that average. Is the comp level that down up there? Newman really doesn't have a bad loss. (Monty and Mt Eden) Wallace and the football guys are definitely proving to be the difference. I've heard really good things about coach Travis. Hopefully he would be the guy to take over Newman "eventually".

The Northbay is down this year both the NBL and SCL I would say are average at best.
NBL teams
Ranch - terrible haven't won a league game in 5 years
Casa - on a couple year slide the program defiantly took a few steps back after coach Forni passed. I know they have good athletes at the school not sure why that is not translating to wins especially in a down year
Ukiah - another program that took a step back when they dismissed coach Heath who was at the helm for over 25 years. In the past ukiah was a tough place to travel to and was always good for an upset or two but coaching may be a bit suspect
Santa Rosa - making strides the last few years and they are improving but have not been a factor in at least 15 years.
Maria Carillo - coaching has always been suspect at this school they have had some good athletes come through this school but aside from a few years have never been a factor. Without exceptional athletes the pumas seem to struggle.
Windsor - really suprised to see there record where it is at, expected to see them a little lower than where they are I think they are 1 year away. They are always strong on the defensive side of the ball and play hard but struggle at time to score the ball.
Monty - same old Monty ball spread the floor shoot the three, on nights when the 3 is falling they can compete with anyone. Strong coaching and the program always finds a way to win some games and win some games they probably shouldn't.
Newman - another 20 win team but defiantly not a strong year for the Cardinals. Coach bonfigli does a solid job at the helm but I find the schedule to be a little suspect. Newman always has above average talent and win 20 games as they should. They are definitely in the drivers seat.

Overall I think
Newman 13-1 I think they will lose a game somewhere
Windsor 11-3 they lose again to newman and lose one they shouldn't Monty at home or at ukiah
Monty 11-3 or 10-4 I have feeling they lose to newman and beat windsor the second time around ?

SCL
Analy - will roll through SCL again but are not a playoff threat maybe win 1 in the playoffs. It is really time to move them to the NBL football team is strong and basketball has shown they need some competition. The league realignment really needs to address this huge disparity.
Healdsburg - showing improvement winning some games but are going to get smacked in the D4 playoffs no real threat
Piner - coach Erickson in my opinion is one of the best coaches in the area always finds a way to win games with whatever talent he has. The area in west santa rosa that Piner draws from has really changed and they no longer have the athletes to make any deep runs.
The rest nothing really needs to be said no factors.

I think what you have in the Northbay are three to four average teams and the rest are non factors

Good write up. Yeah I recall those trips to Ukiah when Heath was at the helm. He did a great job up there. Newman schedule is suspect for sure. They do have a few solid wins.

Miramonte
Dougherty Valley (they play in a brutal league but recently played DLS to a 5 pt loss)
Montgomery
Analy
Marin Catholic (although they are down but they could win the MCAL)
Windsor 2x

If they would have beaten Mt Eden that would have solidified a real solid win. But otherwise this is a Newman that like you said will win 20+ games and probably a couple NCS/Norcal games but I don't see anything more. I mean not exactly chop liver though.

The entire Sonoma County is down (boys and girls) except for CN girls.
Its as bad as i have ever seen it.
The best team in the county for boys (CN) would have a tough time even making the shaughnessy back in the days of the Piner, Monty, CN NBL days.
Rancho Cotate has a 63 game league LOSING streak currently in the NBL. Add teams like Maria Carrillo, Casa Grande and Ukiah whom are going to end up with 3 or 4 wins each in league because they all play each other and somebody has to win.
Some BAD ball being played in the wine country.

I agree with everyone that the league is down. Sonoma Guy's breakdown is very good.

I would add (with apologies to Branson fan, who has a good point) is that a) Monty can beat anyone on a night when their shooters are hot. b) Wallace is very good but can be defended - a team that stays in his face will beat Newman. c) Santa Rosa has as much talent as anybody but seems to have chemistry issues. d) Carrillo has had decent games against the top teams. They may have an upset in them during the second half. e) Rancho is actually much better this year - better coached and have a couple players. They lost to Casa by 2pts and still may get a league win this year. If you look at football and soccer, the school does have athletes. Once they build the new gym I bet things change radically.

Also, in NBL grad news: I hear that former player of the year Alec Raven, from Monty, successfully walked on at Cal Poly. He's an end-of-the-bench player, but still, that is awesome. And if that highly abrasive Folsom guy is still here lurking, he would be interested to know that after taking a year off, Eric Poulsen, also from Monty via Analy, is a freshman on a good SRJC team and is averaging almost 20pts per game. Not quite "soft as Charmin" as you so loved to call him when he was still a child.

Santa Rosa should be better than Newman talent wise, but I see coaching, or a lack thereof, along with undisciplined players, making them marginal. As far as Wallace being defended, any player can be defended. Take the Monty and Windsor games. Both Tiedeman and Taylor had him followed all game and he was still able to score at will in the fourth quarter. Rancho is still a bad team. Casa is even worse. The new gym at The Ranch may bring a few inter-district transfers and keep some of the talent down in RP. Monty has shooters all over the floor and Soria is a good little point guard, but I feel their lack of size is holding them back.

Newman is quietly 17-2 but historically speaking they appear pretty average. Down league and soft schedule. Not crazy to think they run the table though. They are deep and have some size and seem to be getting better as Wallace got into hoop shape.
Poulson will get some pretty decent D1 offers, He is averaging 20 and 12 at SRJC on a good team. He made the right move.

I heard a couple of interesting tidbits recently re: Rancho and the NBL/SCL.

1) They are going to stop the inter district transfers. Which should help schools like Rancho, Elsie Allen, SR & Piner. Rancho has consistently lost athletes to Analy(especially in BBall). Elsie and Piner have had huge amounts of kids transfer to east side schools. If, in fact, this is true, Montgomery basketball will be affected as they have consistently benefitted on transfers of players from other districts(especially from the SR district). And of course Maria Carrillo will be the school most affected as they have clearly benefited from the transfers as kids have consistently transferred in because of MC high academics.

2) The $$$ for the new gym at Rancho Cotate has disappeared. No one is sure where it is.
Ground HAS NOT been broken (it was supposed to be already) and the official opening, which was supposed to be this Dec 2017 for basketball season, is now looking like it will be postponed until the FOLLOWING 2018 season.

Yes, that's going to be interesting. True about Carrillo in terms of academics but it's a mixed bag for athletes. Talented football players and boys and girls basketball players know to stay away. Plus they probably lose more students to Newman than any other SR school.

Look beyond basketball and football.
The other smaller sports from swimming to track and field, soccer, volleyball, baseball...etc. they dominate..
3 yrs back the girls won EVERY sport in the NBL except softball. Remember the "school of champions " article in the Press Democrat?

And you cant compare the loss of kids to CN to the losses of transers. Private school kids are private school kids. Inter district transfer or not, they would still be going.

Personally not a fan of stopping inter district transfers. I think people should have choices.

Carrillo does well in the "Stanford Sports" but struggles with Football (coaching) and hoops. Not sure what it is with the hoops. I really don't follow them to much, other than my daughter telling me, "We suck at basketball". Coaching? Not sure if its the case or not, but seems like since Deakins and Azevedo have left the programs have not done too much.

My point is that I believe that there are more families that can afford private school living in Carrillo's turf than Rosa's or Monty's, and certainly Piner's or Elsie's.

BTW I do not know anything about transfers affecting Rancho and Analy but the situation in the SR district is that SRHS and MCHS are at their enrollment caps.
