As we close out league play in the next week or so around Northern California, we can narrow the selections of teams that might be Open worthy.
Again, I feel strong that 8 teams will be bracketed.

Central Coast Section:
Archbishop Mitty Monarchs 16-3, 8-1 WCAL, MaxPreps# 13 California
Archbishop Riordan Crusaders 15-4, 8-1 WCAL, MaxPreps#27 California

Central Section:
Clovis West Golden Eagles 23-2, 5-1 Tri-River, MaxPreps# 14 California
Saint Joseph Knights 18-5, 9-0 Mountain, MaxPreps#73 California

North Coast Section:
Cardinal Newman Cardinals 23-1, 9-1, North Bay Oak, MaxPreps#23 California
Clayton Valley Charter Ugly Eagles 20-2, 8-0 Diablo Foothill, MaxPreps#35 California
De La Salle Spartans 19-5, 6-1 EBAL, MaxPreps#20 California
Dougherty Valley Wildcats 21-3, 6-1 EBAL, MaxPreps#15 California
Dublin Gaels 17-7, 6-1 EBAL, MaxPreps#51 California
Salesian Pride 17-7 8-0 Tri-City rock, MaxPreps#50 California

Sac-Joaquin Section:
Folsom Bulldogs 21-2, 6-0 SFL, MaxPreps#8 California
Inderkum Tigers 19-2, 8-0 CVC, MaxPreps#17 California
Jesuit Marauders 18-4, 7-0 Delta, MaxPreps#36 California
Modesto Christian Crusaders 18-6, 9-0 TCAL, MaxPreps#49 California

I would throw Clayton Valley in there as well.

I think you are right with 8 teams. That’s a pretty solid list right there.
Here’s my guess in no order
Modesto Christian
Folsom
Dougherty Valley
Mitty
Riordan
Clovis West
DLS
Clayton Valley

Not sure about Inderkum having a bad loss to Folsom. I don’t think you get 3 in from SJS. However, they’ve had a great season and are ranked high.

Inderkum whoever gets them on their Sac-Joaquin Section D1 Bracket better be ready. Folsom win in early December was also Folsom's top-quality win over highly ranked team. If I was Folsom or Modesto Christian ;) I would be prepared for a battle. I have Inderkum in my Nor-Cal Top 5 over Folsom. They Play St. Joesph of Santa Maria on the 4th.

If NCS gets 3 teams, then 2 of them would have to come from the finalists in the NCS Open Division. Last year, only 6 teams were placed in the NCS Open, 3 from the EBAL and 3 from the DFAL.
This year, CN, Moreau & Salesian are also knocking on that door, along with CVC, Campo & most of the EBAL.
The EBAL has playoffs this year, which will help determine which teams get placed into the NCS Open. DV has DLS tonight and Dublin Friday. No word on Beasely’s status, but they’re in if they win both. CVC plays at Campo tonight (Kiddman will no doubt be there too!), and if they can beat Campo a 2nd time I think their ticket is punched.
I love this time of year! Buckle up! 🍿

Campo is at least one step down, probably more, from the better NCS teams this season. There is no question the EBAL is where the best basketball in NCS lives in 2023.

Campo is a very good team, but they’ll have their hands full in winning NCS, whether they play in D2 or are selected for the NCS Open. They’re currently ranked 4th in D2 behind SRV, CN & Salesian. It’s possible one or more of those D2 teams may get moved into the NCS Open, but it will still be a tough division with whoever doesn’t get moved up, and other teams such as Montgomery, Redwood, Alameda & Benicia in the loaded D2 bracket.

My thinking at this moment is that Campo has a couple too many losses to find their way into NCS open, let alone NorCal. They may have knocked CVC out of the NCS Open, however... Mayyyyybe.

Question, does NCS use enrollment size to determine divisions, unlike CIF and NorCal?

I believe it’s strictly enrollment divisions outside of the teams taken into the NCS Open. Of course many teams have been moved up into higher enrollment divisions over the years due to sustained success such as CN, Salesian, Moreau and others.

That is exactly what I feel in regard to why Campo could be selected into NCS open, as observer22 has illustrated from sustained success. Not a given but has placed them back in the light.

Yes, if Campo wins the NCS Open then they move past any EBAL or any other Open team from NCS. It is very likely the winner/runner-up, and the two open semi-finalists will advance to the Nor-Cal Open bracket.

D2 is so loaded. You are 100%. It’s been a really good year for hoops in norcal. Seems like you have a lot of parity. Not one team is going to roll everybody.

Campo ain't winning the NCS Open
That’s not likely, but as the defending NCS Open Champs, they might get an invite to the NCS Open this year where another school might not. They haven’t been as dominant as they’ve been in prior years, but they’ve got a solid squad.
Is the DFAL having a playoff this season? If so, then whoever wins out between Campo & CVC should be in the NCS Open for sure.

What are the rules if you get invite to ncs open and lose in first round with regards to norcal? Could you possibly be selected still as at large?

The SJS has had 4 teams in the open before. I can see several paths where the SJS gets at least 3 teams in. Not sure it will happen, but if MC loses in section semis, SJS will get at least 3 open teams because MC always petitions for the open as they should. This year should be a lock for 8 teams in open. It should be 8 teams every year!

Right now this is my NCS Open Division:

1. De La Salle vs. 8. University
2. Dougherty Valley Vs. 7. Branson
3. San Ramon Valley Vs. 6. CVC
4. Cardinal Newman Vs. 5. Salesian

First Four Out: , Granada, Dublin, Campolindo, Justin-Siena

Explanation: Uni vs. DLS is a great first round matchup, with upset potential. DV vs. Branson same thing. CVC doesn’t deserve to lose their spot after a tough loss to a bubble Campo team. Cardinal Newman has 1-loss…..Dublin a much stronger schedule, but I’m not leaving out a 1-loss team.

Also last year I know they only did 6, I think this year it’s adjusted to 8. No byes.

How is DLS the top seed if they didn’t even win their league? And SRV is currently in 6th place?

university is a stretch... they have 1 or 2 decent wins. the masses would much rather see granada, dublin or campo in.

Dublin has a Pac12 kid and is tied for 1st in the Ebal. They are open over CN and Uni. Granada is the school with 2 D1 kids that won’t be in the open unless they win the Ebal tournament

Agreed. If CN got in they would be #8 and even that seems optimistic. They just don’t have a couple more quality wins.

I'm talking about since the NCS started an Open division. Seems to me I read somewhere that NCS Open is only open to D1-D3 teams.

I believe this has been talked about over on the girls' side because Piedmont, a D4 team, is undefeated and it is assumed there that they have to play D4.

I think they are also saying that if Piedmont runs right thru NCS D4, that an exception might be able to occur at NorCals, but I'm not sure about that one...

Yup, St. Joe's in 2017.

They hosted Mitty in the NorCal first round after breezing through the NCS D4 tourney. I remember there were quite a few complaints about them hosting an Open game in their little gym.

(I was there for that, they gave a terrific effort without their suspended star Jade' Smith, losing by only 6.)

As of today's MaxPreps rankings, if the North Coast section committee went strictly by those, we'd have:

#6 CVC @ #1 Dougherty Valley
#5 Branson @ #2 SRV
#4 Cardinal Newman @ #3 DLS

Of course, with NBL and EBAL playoffs (and upsetcity.com lurking about), plus DFAL games, all could still change in the blink of an eye at the seeding meetings...

As far as I know, MaxPreps #4 University, being a D4 team, will have to stay in D4 for NCS (as discussed above), despite their #4 rank at MaxPreps.

It will be interesting. Will 2-loss CN get in despite not winning their league? SRV is seeded 5th in the EBAL tourney, and I think they’ve got to at least win 2 games to reach the semis of the league tourney to get in. If they knock off DV they’re a lock. I’d go ahead and put in DLS, DV & CVC right now. Will they pull up D3 Branson?

How much does strength of schedule matter to the selection committee? A couple of the teams listed have low scores.

Kiddman I believe it would go
1 Dougherty bye.
#4 Cn vs #5 Branson
#2 SRV bye
#3 DLS vs #6 CVC

oh, duh on my part...
Of course there are byes in a 6-team bracket.

btw, Branson is D2, not D3.

I think if CN wins league tourney they will get nod.
Otherwise I would have them out. But it will take a lot for anybody to beat DV in sections and in norcal.
