I'll be out at Santa Clara on Saturday. If anyone else is out there, come by and say hi.

Open: Mitty over Cardinal Newman (Like the way CN is playing, but Mitty has too much firepower)

DI: McClatchy over Oak Ridge (McClatchy could be the best non Open team in NorCal. Gets second win over Oak Ridge)

D2: Vanden over Miramonte (toughest one to pick, but i'll go with home court advantage)

D3: Campolindo over SMB (Campo has the best player in Van Dyke and the depth to win this one)

D4: West Campus over St. Joseph (Guard play for WC carries the day)

D5: Eastside Prep over Woodside (Fun CCS battle, but Eastside has the D5 bracket on lockdown)

Actually, McClatchy has beaten Oak Ridge twice this season--in the section tournament and earlier in the season at Oak Ridge's own tournament. But I predict Oak Ridge will win this NorCal finals game against McClatchy just on the theory that it's hard to beat the same very good team three consecutive times in one season. The third game is the charm as people say.

hope I don't jinx it, but Maxpreps indicates that NFHS is carrying all Norcal Finals. knock me over with a feather!

Campo has no depth! SMB guards are healthy and will probably be too athletic for Campo's guards.

I agree that Campo doesn't have much depth but other than that I think the guard match up is fine and as streak one said, Van Dyke is the game changer since SMB doesn't have anyone to match up with her

I asked my daughter. " Kennedi Villa" How do you feel about this game? She said "Dad, this is the biggest game of my life so far" I asked. Do you know Van Dyke?" She said "yes dad she is the best player on that team"

All I'm going to say is. If Campo beats SM.... it won't be easy. These girls are hungry and having fun. Campo is going to be in a dog fight. Ask Salesian or O'dowd.

D1....McClatchy over Oakridge
if you have been paying attention all season everyone knows they were my "sleeper" team all year.
Since the 1st post/thread on rankings and who was going to be good....I've maintained that they were sneaky good and watch out for them. I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut once I awhile.
D2....MM over Vanden
I just keep looking at the Brea Olinda game for both teams. Vanden got running clocked by BO while MM beat them. Hard to overlook that. Im willing to give Vanden the benefit that they have improved since that loss and they get the home court advantage of a boys/girls doubleheader. But I think MM wins in a battle to the end last possession type of game.
D3....SMB over Campo
Can I pick BOTH teams? Van Dyke is a beast and Thoms is slick....BUT the 2 senior D1's for SMB are rolling and as a team they are playing their best ball right now, peaking at the perfect time. Reluctantly I'm picking SMB on what should be an EXTREMELY entertaining game. Either way I'll be rooting big time for the winner in the state final as I'm a fan of both teams.
D4....West Campus over St. Joes
West Campus has 4 players who should play at the next level. St. Joes is a year away but I think SJ will keep it close....
D5....ESP over Woodside
How much longer is the CCS going to allow ESP to play D5?
ESP relentless pressure and effort will be too much in the end for Wood as ESP will go on to their 3rd straight state final game and 2nd straight state title.

Open - Mitty by 9
D1 McClatchy by 9 -
D2 Vanden by 9
D3 Campo by 9
D4 West Campus by 9
D5 Eastside by 29

SJS gets the benefit of the open in all divisions. No open and SJS does not get any titles. With the open they collect three.

I think people are underestimating SMB a little bit. They might be the more athletic team. Van Dyke will get hers, but I like SMBs athleticism overall.

Campo almost always sh*ts the bed in big games.

If CIF doesn't change course, teams like Eastside will no longer be in D5 (or even D4) in NorCals. The committee will assign teams to divisions based on competitive level rather than enrollment.

A far as the CCS I look at how they placed the San Diego Open division teams since that's most comparable to the CCS (which also has an open division and is comparable as far as quality and number of top/good teams). The top two SD open teams went SoCal Open, the next 2 D-1, the next 3 D-2 and the 8th place/seeded open team D-3. And that's how they did it on the boys side for San Diego open teams as well. So no section open team lower than D-3 and I figure it will be a similar placement for the 8 CCS open teams. They will certainly be the first 8 put on the board from that section. This year for example you'd see 3 CCS open teams in the NorCal open (as it was actually done) then the other 5 placed from D-1 to D-3 based on how they finished (or were seeded if no consolation) in the section open playoff. Hard to tell with the other NorCal sections since they have no open division. Probably just power rank them and fill in as appropriate.

Dude, your buddy Thoms is going to be pissed at you for backing the loser.
I am sure if you asked him before the game he would have told you Campo would win.
Sorry about CN lose but Campo is going to State!

I think that anyone that saw the game will have to agree with me now!
The Campo guards were more than equal to the SMB guards as they were just as athletic and just (if not more) talented. But, as I said, SMB had no answer for Van Dyke.

First, congrats to Coach Thomas and Campo. They are a good team and I'm rooting for them.
Two, I don't hide behind pseudonyms and I call it like it is. Van Dyke was the best post player we have faced. She has gotten better and it's scary to think that she's only a junior.

As far as the guard play, you are wrong. Their guards are good, but not yet the caliber of a Gill and Villa. I usually don't comment on posts, but I feel compelled when my kids are talked about.

I wish Campo the best and expect them to bring back a state title to the north.

Nice post, Chris, and congrats on a great season.

I do think Aubrey Wagner is one of the more underrated players around. She's crucial for Campo because what she does fits in very well with Ashley Thoms and Haley Van Dyke. She's a tall strong guard who can handle and see the floor, and even though she doesn't score, her contribution is crucial.

Definitely Coach...
I will never slight any of the players, especially at this point of a season. The teams playing these last weeks consist of solid to great players. All with the potential to be great due to the experience and level of competition they are facing.

Wagner didn't play her best. She looked to be hurt. But like most good players, she found her way back to the scorers table to finish the game.

For the record, I believe PG's don't have to score to be effective. She is a really good one and I hope she gets better before Friday.
