St. Francis beat El Cerrito in an exciting, well-played game, breaking open a close one with an impressive run in the 3rd quarter, then holding on to win 73-68. These teams look like they'll go deep in the playoffs, and could even meet again in the NorCals. The new-find guy, at least for me, is sophomore guard Logan Johnson of St Francis. He is 6'3"', quick with nice hops... Sees the floor well, makes hard passes look easy, plays tough on the defensive end. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get multiple D1 offers... If he hasn't already.

In the other semi, Sacramento broke open a seesaw battle with Capital Christian early in the 4th quarter and won 75-59 in a game that was far better than that score might indicate. Both of these teams also look they'll go far.

Left side of the bracket... Not so pretty. Salesian blew out Gridley by 25 or so... Most interesting thing about the game was the youth of the Pride... They started three sophs and a freshman! These guys might be really dangerous with growth and experience.

The other semi demonstrated just how badly things are going for Campo. I found out that Austin Clarke has messed up his ankle and is out for at least four weeks. What's left of the Cougars squad got blown out by what looked to me to be a rather ordinary Oak Ridge group. Football is holding onto at least a couple more Cougars for awhile...

Tough news for Campo. What's your take on Cole Compton from Oak Ridge?

Good inside battle tonight with Young and Hewitt.

Thanks for the updates

Compton... Had to wait til I got home where I could look at my program to see who you were asking about. I only vaguely remember him after finding a photo at MaxPreps.

My brain was too busy wrapping itself around Campo's plummet from last year's greatness. Well, Campo football lost, so maybe they'll start picking up some of the pieces soon...

Speaking of which, is there any specific rule regarding guys who come from football to hoops after the season started? Do they have to practice a certain minimum number of hours before they can get into a game, or can they just jump right in?

Things got a little worse for Campo, they lost to Gridley who hadn't won a game in tourney since 2000. Clarke should be back in 2-3 weeks I hear.

Campo football won on Friday, so they're still alive for another week. Clarke being out is a big loss, as was losing Hansen to graduation. They should still be a force in league this year, but maybe no postseason run.

Congrats to Gridley for getting a win! I'm not sure how beneficial that tournament is to them for season success, but definitely a fun event and very well ran.

I think football players can come right on and play. No minimum number of practices. Their season has to end first before they can participate though.

I would have to agree with you regarding Salesian they are really young and start one senior, and by my estimation they're going to be awfully scary!! The lone senior on their team has to be the most underrated player in the class of 2016. When I saw him this summer he was playing with the Soldiers Blue as their point guard, but now with Salesian he plays multiple positions.

In some schools or districts, the football players actually need to go through a try out of a few days before they are allowed to play, rather than just being placed on the team, even if they are returning starters. This is to ensure the fairness of the try out process. Not sure how widespread, but I wouldnt be surprised if Campo has this with the helicopter parents in that district.
