Patrick Roth with a strong take on alleged recruiting

Patrick Roth doesn't hold back when talking about "Cosumnes Oaks" area players heading to other schools - http://www.egcitizen.com/sports/loc...cle_860483de-c5ab-11e6-a706-3b35151c4889.html
I don't think Roth's take is strong he just said what everyone knows is going on. Not going to name names and get into mudslinging but one private school is the area has been down right cheating for a long long time. They don't even try to hide it...but the CIF seems uninterested in bringing sanctions on them so I don't see them changing the way they do things.

It is a strong take because it is on the record with his name. When else has that happened recently?

Streak, I guess you are right because he went on the record with it. Even though everyone knows and talks about things no other coaches have said it through the media.

Coach Roth is going about it the right way- build your program and sell the merits of the entire school experience, not just hoops.

If the local kids/families believe CO has what they seek, they will stay. If they dont believe it is a good fit, they will look elsewhere.

Roth has to be realistic with himself. Times are changing and you can't expect parents of top young players who have been traveling all over the country to top AAU tourneys. To go to the local HS and play a local schedule. There are schools both private and public that are accessible that are traveling and playing top tier competition. Just being real CC just left Vegas and now they're headed to Maxpreps Tourney. CO traveled to McKinleyville and now they're going to Acalenes. No disrespect but be realistic. On this board somebody just criticized Woodcreek for playing in COs tourney.

916 i don't think anyone is saying don't go to certain schools or don't go private schools. Different schools have different things to offer but having kids come to a school because of basketball reputation is completely different than outright rule breaking and recruiting.

Should Coach Roth or any other coach for that matter be upset that an 8th grader chooses another high school other than the one they coach at?

Despite the fact that Coach Roth says they have been losing 8th graders and have been "picked" for several years he says that "I’m having the time of my life. This is the best year of coaching I’ve had.” That begs the question. Why do people choose to coach HS ball? To just win games? Or is it for the love and passion for the game and to give teenagers tools to succeed in life? If it is for the latter then there is no need to lament about being "picked" for the last few years.

Roth says this about his basketball program, "We run a great program. I would challenge it with anybody’s with what we do. In term of our culture, we have breakfasts together, we are in the weight room, we’re watching film, we’re year round. There is no way that any other school in this area is that much better...our quality of education is higher. We’ve got great teachers on this campus that can teach circles around most teachers.” while adding that the school he coaches at is already free. If these claims are true and they clearly conveyed to parents then Cosumnes Oaks should claim its fair share of players. The school should have no problem convincing students to play at their local public school, especially since the thing that matters most, the "quality of education", is higher at Cosumnes Oaks according to Roth.

Another issue raised in the article seems to be about private school parents being around middle school basketball players, and influencing them to attend a private HS, specifically Capital Christian or Christian Brothers. This type of action is said to be "unethical" according to the author. Yet the author states that Coach Roth intends to create a youth basketball program to essentially serve as a feeder program to the CO basketball program to keep it "at a high level"! So now he wants direct influence prior to high school so he can get better basketball players and win more games. This is also coming from a coach who had to forfeit 16 wins a couple years ago for using a illegal transfer player. SJS ruled it to be an "athletically motivated transfer" i.e. recruiting. Upon hearing that his appeal of the forfeits was rejected coach Roth stated “For us, it’s not about wins and losses,” Interesting.

Like its a big F'ing deal to go on the record and say what every body knows. Capital Christian just got blasted by Dublin a public school and when has Christian Brothers been good? Not like we are talking about state powers. Players will just keep bouncing around. Its the way it is now.

Did CO travel to Mckinleyville or did they schedule them for the first game of their own tourney

This sounds a lot like the way VC has been recruiting top athletes via " Camp Cam" in the Bay Area. VC even offers aide above and beyond what is necessary. Guess what......they just keep winning. " If you don't get caught, it ain't cheating"

I think a lot of the "money part" of it is false. It mostly is the allure of playing in marquee events and the promise of getting recruited. How truthful those things are is very questionable.
