Let us not forget Bill Gray, the longtime coach at Oceana and Terra Nova in Pacifica. He retired with 256 wins, by far the most in San Mateo County history. By the way, there is speculation that Gray is PAL Booster. Why? Because he is one of the key architects of the CCS playoff ranking system. He moved out of state but he remains up to speed on CCS football matters. But we are speculating here. Buz Williams had 201 wins for those of you keeping score. So Walsh will be No.2 on the SMC list at some point fairly soon.

Was fortunate enough to play for Bill Gray after college for a few years. Mark Fabri, Ed Larios, John Gilmore and other north county coaqching legends. We practiced 2x a week and these guys had detailed scouting reports and game plans. Completley outcoached every team we played and we were quite successful

Did you run "Seams and Rails" on offense?

And don't give short shrift to coaches like Ray DeJong at South City and Pete Matisi at Westmoor (which, like Oceans, has dropped football).

And then there was Joe McGrath at Jefferson. Joe did not win multiple NPL championships like some of his peers. But his mere survival is a story in itself. He was a U.S. Army tanker in Europe during World War II. He was hit by sharpnel during an engagement with the Germans and he nearly perished on the battlefield. His throat and vocal chords were cut. He bled extensively, but his life was saved. When he later coached at the Daly City school, he could barely talk in a normal fashion. Didn't matter. He was alive and coaching. His players understood.

He's two-three seasons away from #2 or 3 on the list. I can't believe I forgot him. I had a great experience watching a game with my son sitting next to Mike Singletary who was watching his son play. Very nice man. My son who was 5 or 6 at the time was writing stories on his note pad and Mike got a kick out of disinterest in the game. My son not a football fan (yes that kills me) ended up playing Lacrosse and basketball but the writing and books helped him later with his academics as he is currently in his last year of med school. Have attended quite a few games at the hill top stadium. Great view of the lights of San Jose at night.

Good job dad and mom. As parents you put them on that path. Their success is your success
