Playoff's are here! The PCAL will be well represented in D2 through D5. Over all I like this system better than the previous versions. I know their is no perfect system. I would recommend a couple minor tweaks:
  1. "A" divisions get a lot of points and that is fine but make the 5 league champions play in the DI bracket followed by the next 3 highest ranked team (Most years WCAL 2-4). To me Salinas should be DI and Half Moon Bay DII.
  2. becasue of the points earned, all "A" qualifiers should be place in DI-DIII. It seems silly to have A teams in DIV and below. (Looking at you Milpitas,Carmel Santa Teresa and Leland)

Gabilan- As expected 5 teams got in, in the irony that only CCS playoffs could produce, the fith place team, Alvarez missed the playoffs while the 6th place team, Carmel, secured a home game and a #3 seed in DIV. Salinas won the championship outright, but do I not know if they will be good enough to beat Los Gatos for the DII championship. Palma has had the injury bug strike at the worst time. Aptos and Hollister will battle in the first round of DIII and the winner should give #1 TKA a battle in the semifinals. Carmel has a chance because of their DIV placement.

Mission- Seaside beating MVC in 3(?) OT caused a tri-championship. Good thing the division has 3 spots. The win coupled with Carmel's loss (and about 1000 other events) pushed Seaside into DIII. Although they will battle Seaside does not have the depth to make it far. MVC is now onthe bottom of DIV, if they make it pass Branham they will have a Battle tested Carmel squad waiting for them. Alisal may make some noise in the DV bracket as they are big and physical.

Cypress- Santa Cruz won a title then went out and lost to the last place team. Not quite sure what to make of them. (Was it to drop a division?) They have some impressive wins but some mind boggling losses. Soquel was able to get at large bid, while Gonzales was one of the last teams not to make the field. Pretty good year for the Cypress.

Santa Lucia- Pacific Grove won a tainted title (there is no to truth this). No team that almost losses to Marina deserves a tittle. I don't care if they were undefeated in league.

Here are my Picks for the CCS

D1
#1 Serra vs #8 HMB - Serra survives a scare (24-21)
#4 MA vs #5 Wilcox- This could be the best 1st round match up, Wilcox in a squeaker (28-27)
#3 SI vs #6 Mitty - SI beats its league rival again (24-10)
#2 VC vs #7 SF- VC Rolls (28-7)

Wilcox over Serra
VC over SI
VC over Wilcox- VC is Champion

D2
#1 LG vs #8 LO- Los Gatos should win (30-7)
#4 SHP vs #5 Bell- Bell's not all the way dead yet -(17-14)
#3 Palma vs #6 PA- When the brackets first came out I really liked Palma to win the division. The QB play is better, and RB1 is a stud and RB2 is really good. They are great on both sides of the ball. But if neither RB can go and their best athlete is banged up I cant see them getting past Palo Alto. Palo Alto (24-14)
#2 Salinas vs #7 OG- Salinas may have the most explosive offense in the CCS. They should have no problem with Oak Grove. Still worried about their defense (Salinas 42-21)

Los Gatos over Bellermine
Salinas over Palo Alto
Los Gatos over Salinas- Los Gatos is champion

D3
#1 TKA vs #8 SM -TKA rolls 35-14
#4 Aptos vs #5 SB - Its a shame they make league rivals play in the first round. These 2 played a close game earlier in the season with Hollister winning. Aptos seems to have continued to improve, Hollister is just not fast enough. Aptos (35-21)
#3 MV vs #6 Burlingame- Burlingame is playing inspired ball lately. A mild upset BG (21-18)
#2 TN vs #7 Seaside- Props to the Seaside Coaching staff for a great year despite losing 3 of thier top players to injuries early in the year. But Terra Nova might just be a bit to fast for them. (TN 28-21)

Aptos over TKA
TN over Burlingame
TN over Aptos - Terra Nova is Champion

D4
#1 Milpitas vs #8 Overfelt- Milpitas in DIV? (Milpitas 35-14)
#4 Hillsdale vs #5 Soquel- Soquel has had a great season, but they have not played that tough of a schedule. Hillsdale is a bit more tested. (Hillsdale 24-14)
#3 Carmel vs #6 Saratoga - I am surprised the conspiracy theories have not popped up about Carmel losing to Alvarez to secure a higher seed in DIV and get out of the DIII bracket. Truth is they just played like crap and made too many mistakes. If they clean it up they should handle Saratoga. Carmel 41-28
#2 Branham vs #7 MVC -I was a little surprised MVC lost to Seaside. This is a well coached disciplined team. This will serve them well in the playoffs. MVC (24-17)

Milpitas over Hillsdale
Carmel over MVC
Carmel Over Milpitas - Carmel is Champion (Yes I am a homer)

D5
#1 Leland vs #8 Mt Pleasant- Taking Leland and the stud QB (35-20)
#4 Homestead vs #5 Mills- How did Mills get blown out by Capuchino? Homestead (28-27)
#3 Alisal vs #6 ST- I really like Alisal's Chances in this division. They have a very big physical team that does not rely on one superstar. Old school smash mouth football. (Alisal 35-21)
#2 SC vs #7 PG- The neurotic Santa Cruz Cardinal will get their revenge vs PG. If they good Santa Cruz team shows up they should easily defeat PG. If the bad team (losses to Scott's Valley, PG and Watsonville) shows up, PG may have a chance. Here is hoping to the good Santa Cruz team. Santa Cruz (38-7)

Leland over Homestead
Alisal over Santa Cruz
Leland over Alisal- Leland is champion (But in a close game)

Competitive equity being what it is, I think the brackets look terrific.

D-I: Serra is absolutely vulnerable without their starting QB. HMB could give them a lot of trouble. Ultimately, I like VC to win.

D-II: Three teams have legit shots, but only two if Palma’s RBs can’t go. That said, if Palo Alto does advance, Salinas has had a lot of problems with the Vikings in their last two playoffs games. An upset would not be out of the question. If Palma advances, it’s going to be another slugfest between them and the Cowboys and either are capable of beating Los Gatos.

D-III: This is a pretty balanced division. I like Aptos to get revenge on Hollister. I think whoever wins between the Mariners and The King’s Academy in the second round wins this division.

I’m on a plane right now we’re about to take off. I’ll finish the rest later.

Well That was a disappointing first round for the PCAL. The best the league could of done was 9-2 the worst 2-9. They finished 3-8. Ouch!!

Gabilan
- Aptos won the D III match up with Hollister. Not a big surprise. They should match up well with TKA in the Semi Finals. Hollister will be fine as they have great numbers lower levels. The only concern for Hollister is that they have not had a great play-maker in a few years. They are a solid team and are always big upfront. If completely healthy I believe Palma beats Palo Alto. With out the top 2 RB's and their best Athlete Palma just could not get enough offense for the comeback. As always they will re-load and challeng next year for the top spot in the Gabilan. Salinas was perhaps the biggest disappointment form the weekend. Apparently 5 kids were suspended prior to the game, never found out the exact reason, Grades, discipline etc.. Even with that I thought they wold have enough to beat Oak Grove. I imagine we will be watching their QB1 on Saturday's in a year or 2. Carmel won the only PCAL game not played agianst another PCAL team. When firing on all cylnners this offense is unstoppable.

Mission- Seaside has been down some of their best players most of the year. It is a credit to the coaches they were as successful as they were this year. It finally caught up to them vs Terra Nova. I was surprised that Branham handled MVC so easily. MVC is an improving program and they may get moved up next year to the Gabilan. Alisal was another disappointment not that they lost but they were blown out. I figured with that style of ground and pond they could keep the games close. Props to Santa Teresa for the Big Victory>

Cypress- Santa Cruz avenged their loss Vs PG. This Cardinal team seems to play very well at times and other times is completely over matched. Soquel finished off a very nice season with a close loss. Lowery has done a nice job with this team, if he sticks around, look for this program to keep improving.

Santa Lucia- PG lost. It was good night. Beakers will be in re-build mode next year as they lose 22 of their 26 player roster to graduation. The Good new for PG is the Freshmen class has some pretty good talent. They should be competitive in 2 years.

This Weeks CCS Games-

D1
#1 Serra vs #5 Wilcox- Wilcox can control the game better than HMB. (Wilcox 24-21)
#3 SI vs #2 VC - Expect a WCAL slug fest. Taking VC in a close one (VC 21-20)

VC over Wilcox- VC is Champion

D2
#1 LG vs #4 SHP - I did pick the Bells over SHP last week. So I will go with Los Gatos to knock them out. (Los Gatos 28-20)
#6 Palo Alto vs #7 Oak Grove- Both teams had "upsets" last week. I am going with Oak Grove to keep Rolling (OG 34-28)

Los Gatos over Oak Grove - Los Gatos is champion

D3
#1 TKA vs #4 Aptos This will be a great game between 2 teams that love to run the ball. Bot teams are will coached and very discplined. Game may only last 1.5 hours. (Aptos 32-28)
#2 TN #6 Burlingame- Burlingame has been playing great, TN is really good. (TN 32-24)

TN over Aptos - Terra Nova is Champion

D4
#1 Milpitas vs #4 Hillsdale- Milpitas size will eventually wear down Hilldale. (Milpitas24-14)
#3 Carmel vs #2 Branham v -Branham is big on both sides of the lines, but a lot of their kids go both ways. look for Carmel to exploit that and keep the game moving at a fast pace. Branham will try and slow it down. I don't think Branham has faced a team as fast as Carmel. (Carmel 45-32)

Carmel Over Milpitas - Carmel is Champion (Yes I am a homer)

D5
#1 Leland vs #4 Homestead - I guess Leland got it's #1 QB back? (Leland 30-20)
#2 SC vs #6 ST- The neurotic Santa Cruz Cardinal got a revenge win last week. Santa Teresa crushed a good Alisal team. if the right Cardinal team shows up I think they win. (SC 27-20)

Leland over Santa Cruz - Leland is Champion
