I know this is a football forum, and I am a day late on this, but I thought I'd throw it out there. I loved watching those Georgetown teams back in the 80's. He was an outspoken advocate for his players that sometimes rubbed people the wrong way, but he always seemed to have their best interest at heart, politics be damned.
I was having a conversation with a coach who reminded me how much influence Thompson had on not just basketball, but on all collegiate sports. He wanted fair, established, accessible academic standards, but he also wanted to have the flexibility to work with student athletes when they struggled in transition. It explains his position on NCAA Proposition 48, but also his opposition to NCAA Proposition 42.
May he rest in peace.
