Riordan to be coed

The announcement was made Wednesday by Riordan's authorities. The move comes in the wake of the decision to close nearby all-female Mercy High School in June. This coming fall, the WCAL will be down to just two all-male high schools: Bellarmine Prep in San Jose and Serra in San Mateo.

From what I can find, here is the history of WCAL schools going co-ed. There’s some gray area, as there were a few multi-year transitions.

Mitty: 1972
St. Francis: 1972
Sacred Heart: 1987
SI: 1989
Riordan: 2020
Serra: Still all-boys
Bellarmine: Still all-boys
Valley Christian: I think it has always been co-ed

Bellarmine and Serra are also the WCAL's two oldest schools. The former's enrollment is now just over 1,600; the latter's is about half that number. Thirty years ago, Serra officials made some preliminary moves toward going coed as enrollment declined. But those efforts were stymied by the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

I understand the Archdiocese also stymied Riordan's efforts to go co-ed over a decade ago and hence opened up the Boarding school and overhauled its curriculum to attract young men. It's been successful with its near capacity, but the concern is the HUGE decline in the City Catholic grammar schools as they are the leading feeders for the Holy Trinity.

One question: What happens to the Riordan Brotherhood? Does it become "Sister-Brotherhood?" Or "Brother-Sisterhood?" Or something else? Or not at all? It's a prickly papal conundrum.

Colhenry...I regret to inform you that the "all elected powers to be" of the City and County of SF are making a big push for gender neutral ....so the Riordan Sister-Brotherhood / Brother-Sisterhood will be PC'd to "Siblinghood"
