Crusaders defeat St. Mary's-Berkeley in the Crusader Classic final last night. Does anyone have any details?
I think ARHS Stats and most everyone were at last night's football game.

Yea cause there was ZERO coverage on this game anywhere. Boy have things changed on Phelan. In the 80s 90s and early 2K who would have ever thought the Football program overshadowing the Hoops program! Now we need to boost that Hoops program back to where it was! Get RB some players to work with, PLEASE! Lol. No knock on any of the current players, but ask any alum from 90s and earlier this program has lacked star power. Thankfully RB has coached his ass off since the Dr left. Get the man some tools to work with! ;)

I played high school ball in the 90's and that tournament was one of the best tournaments
around that gym would be packed to the rafters. I remenber watching jefferson high from daly city
was good then and a state champ playing in that tournament with teeter Marshall.Riordan
has fallen way down due to economics in the city along with some of the better city players
going to sacred heart or mission high.

Don't think we'll ever see the talent in the City that Riordan had (most SF/north peninsula schools for that matter!) due to the current economic/demographic landscape. SF WCAL schools still remain competitive. AAA schools have really declined except for Mission recently the past 15 years.

I was saying the same thing the other night at Forum when watching the Riordan team warm up. "Man, 20 years ago, when Riordan team walked in gym, people took notice." Not a bad group of players this year but will be tough once league starts. Not much help in paint, but they look better than last year. sophmore guard Chung nice compliment to senior shooting guard Galindo and Stansberry.

Yes, overall talent down. S.I has lost some mojo over years in attracting cant-miss talent. Havent seen SHC yet, but they never play home games. Mission lost to St. Mary Berkeley by 3, but football season over after this past weekend and 5 players expected back in basketball shape soon. As good as they were last year (NorCal III semis), 12 of 13 back this year. Should breeze through AAA this year.

SI had Johnny Mrlik a few years back. A real shooter. His younger brother opted to go to University High. I think because soccer and basketball conflict at SI and he wanted to do both. The younger Mrlik is also a very nice BB player. I've not seen him play soccer but his numbers are very good.

Johnny Mrlik was a very good shooter/passer and made others look good around him. Very confident young man on court. His younger brother fits nicely into University in/out scheme. University is well-coached and on any given day, can compete with WCAL caliber teams. Over long haul would be tough, but on given day would definately compete. Especially tough in their grammar school size gym.

CityVibes, who was the kid on the Riordan bench in street clothes? I watched the webstream and he looked around 6-5. He's not on the current roster. Is he a transfer awaiting eligibility?

a good team knows how to use its idiosyncratic facilities to its advantage! don't baseball teams build stadiums to fit their sluggers or pitchers?

Apparently a kid from a country in Africa. Living on-campus. Do not know what year of eligibility. Apparently under review by CCS for compliance. Much like kid from Australia, last year. Unaware of "his game". Looks to be a solid 6'3.

Crusaders classic in the 80's.. Terrace Mullins/ Chris Monk vs Gary Payton/Greg Foster .. Jefferson 87/88 state champion team 33-1( Teeter Marshall, Bryon Thomasson, Darryl White) losing to the Lincoln team ( James Renfro and Curtis Keeling).. the Riordian teams with Wayman Strickland & Troy la blanc, then Ray Kelly, dawayne Fontana, jada Wilson..

Riordan had 6 consecutive WCAL titles with 6 DIFFERENT POY's - Erik Newman->Terrence Mullins->Denfield Wade->Wayman Strickland->Ray Kelly->Dwayne Fontana. Amazing!

Any of starting 5 for each of those POYs all would be stars for different teams! Chris Monk wasnt even a POY LOL ridiculous amount of talent! Ronnie I should thank the heavens every day, that he was in the right place at the right time cause it got him to the Riordan HoF and his old pass pick away was the only offense he ran! LOL Talk about rolling a basketball out there and just letting them play and not messing it up! ;)

Hahaha would not doubt it, along with firearms that were prevalent in lockers during the 80s! Was a different school back then...as someone mentioned alot of families have moved out the city because of the cost of living.

Ray kelly was one hell of a point gaurd and fontana was a flat out beast also
Remember dorian manigo was the real deal. Back then st emydius Catholic school
had a pipeline running into riordan full of top notch ballers.

What did Crawford and Phil Kess do after Riordan? Also, the football wasn't too shabby-Steve Sewell straight to the Sooners, then on to the Broncos.

Don't know if Kess played after high school. Crawford originally signed with Pitt, but left his freshman year and bounced around before landing at US International Univ He led the nation at one point during the season in scoring his senior year and I recall he scored 43 pts against Stanford when Dr. Tom Davis coached. He was drafted by the Bulls the same year as Michael Jordan, but got cut. He was a troubled young man with awesome talent. I understand he passed away years ago. One of the best hs players I have ever seen play.

YES the city use to have a lot of baller. AAA had a lot of talent. Kenny Kent( mission) Kenny Crawford(Washington) Riley Lafleur, Graig Perry, Delvon Anderson ( Wilson) Richard Morton, Vino Roberts, (Balboa) Stephen Wilson , Jody Dagg, (McAteer) Akili Jones ( Lowell) Robbie Grigsby, Keeling brothers ( Harold and Bumpy) Troy Morrell.(Lincoln). The good old days of the AAA.

Dam brings me back, Miss my guy Peanut(Aka Vino Roberts). Harold K aka Rapp Brown, don't forget about a real good Baller, David Ortiz( one of the most heady & Talented players, I ever played against.

You have to include that great1982 NorCal champ Washington HS team with David Boone and Quentin Stephens - one of the best AAA teams ever.

J, have you seen any pix of what's been done to the fabulous Forum? JW, I haven't been down on campus at all this school year yet....

1Braincell (haha! very good cheers!), I caught the first two games of the Crusader Classic via the web stream broadcast. I gotta say, the HD quality is great! 1st phase of the Forum renovation includes a new coat of paint for the gym, refinished floor and two new scoreboards that has fields in the board to spell out each team's name, rather than HOME and AWAY. The main baskets are no longer stationary, as they can be raised. Also, the new scorer's table has a lighted ARHS banner. Another feature is the red lights outlining the backboards when the buzzer sounds. Lastly the new lighting eliminates much of the shadows, making the broadcast very nice. I heard the next phase is a lot larger with the installation of single seats in the lower section, building out an indoor entrance / lobby to include the Prep Shop and Wall of Fame area on the parking lot side of the gym and renovating the remainder of the locker room.
Do you have any info on the boarding school kid awaiting CCS eligibility approval? What year is he? I sure hope both the student and AD did their due diligence before undergoing this exercise again with the CCS. Would be sad to see the kid just sit on the bench as Colton did last season.

@irish cheers. SHC has 'soft' benches because everything about that place is 'soft'.

I'll give you a full review when I see a game there.

The Riordan boarding component dramatically alters the talent-acquisition equation.

Nice if you can afford it...We will see how solvent the school continues to be, it wasn't long ago Riordan was threatening to close. I can't imagine with the scholarship money given to the basketball program recently how the school can sustain profitability. Must be a lot of donors, but good for the school if it pulls it off.

You’ve been spewing Riordan’s demise for years. The school has changed its business paradigm to adapt to the changing times and is now thriving.

I guess Riordan was upset of my breakdown of cost given out, it’s embarrassing amount of green backs I agree, but why you deleting my posts? Nothing I stated was false?

I think posting what students are paying (real or otherwise) at a school crosses a line. Your point can be made without the breakdown

Boarding school cost are public knowledge and posted on website. I think it’s great giving out scholarships to kids. My point was it’s a lot of money flowing and an interesting topic for HS sports. The above thread alluded to that. Fair enough I won’t break it down and upset folks. Streak you have to admit it’s interesting non the less.

I do think it’s interesting. I found it interesting without the kids names on there too.

agree should have left names off, when you break down the scholarships and boarders it really puts things into perspective. (Insane amount of money for a school struggling a few years ago) It’s good to see Riordan with deep pockets today, looks like they’re building something special.

THEY had boarders in 2013/2014/2015. JUST LIKE in everything, have to make sure you get the right ones...This is nothing new. RIORDAN HAD A pg Jamie Edward's from England that ran pg on the 1990 team that lost to Mater
DEI..he was a boarder Lived with a family. HE HAD THE single season record for assists in a season..

Not sure if any of you caught "60 Minutes" a few weeks ago, but there was a feature story on scam recruiters bringing African boys to the US to enroll in bogus high schools with the promise that they will play for that school and have a chance for the NBA. I'm glad to see that the Riordan program is legit. (60 Minutes - Season 52, Episode 27)

Did Edwards come to Riordan because of Alton Byrd?

having 4 basketball boarders at one time that seems to be a new thing, no? Direct reflection that Riordan isn’t cashed strapped. 2020 season scholarships $$ given out by Riordan Basketball = Impressive
