Salinas v Placer

Yes, they play hard. Also, they're the last type of team you want to face in overtime.

Speaking of overtime, the CIF changed their rule about where they start in OT this year or last?
Not sure when the OT rule changed

I must say I'm impressed with how they didn't responded being down 21 to 0 in mid 1st quarter. Some teams would fold after being punched that hard so early in the game, but placer settled down and fought there way back into the game. Great win for them especially against the CCS Open D1 champ.

Overtime in high school is from the 10 absent of any carryover penalties from prior down. Where did they start from?

Must have been a dead ball ( unsportsmanlike etc.). foul after end of regulation in which case they would back up to the 25.

SJS is a damn good section. A clear D4 school takes out a big heavy school from another section. Great win by Placer for the SJS.

And within the SJS, the PVL was super strong this year. In the Div 2 playoffs Lincoln almost knocked Del Oro out in the first round; in Div 5 Colfax and Bear River both upset higher-seeded schools that most thought should win (Sonora and Capital Christian) and ended up reaching the finals; and in Div 4 Center also reached the finals unexpectedly, by knocking out Casa Roble. This was the last year of the PVL in its current form. Great way to go out!

That was such an intense game! The energy on both sides was turned up to the max. And the Salinas stadium--"The Pit"--made it all even more intense since with no track, the spectators are so close to the field.

I was proud of Auburn for how many Placer fans traveled the 3+ hours to Salinas on a Friday to be there. And the Salinas stands were overflowing!

Proud of Placer for never giving up. Salinas played super hard too. I like Coach Montoya's quote here .

What an intense game last night. So proud to be an alum and fan. Seemed obvious the opponent was bigger. Montoya had them ready. The "strawchewers" taking that initial Haymaker and coming back was amazing. I do hope their running back that went out is going to be okay. And I do feel for the kicker on the extra point. He had a great leg the whole game. Go Hillmen! One more!

I havent seen pitt live but matchups make fights. I have heard special things about Pitts D.

GB is very big n physical. One thing I think that gets missed by alot of folks is how smart a team is and I think GB and SFL schools are in general. I would bet GB has made very minimal mental mistakes all year. Shoot look at our game (indy vs d.o.) we made about 10 big mental mistakes, yardage was very even but score was not.

How will Pitt react on 3rd and 5, will they false start and make it 3rd 10. Will Pitt have chunck or big plays callled back? Vs great defenses you CAN'T shoot urself in the foot. The same goes for GB.

Both teams are going to be physical, both teams are going to play extremly hard, have great tempo and pursuit. Which team won't make a mental mistake, which team knows how to play vs great teams and not blink when the moment is at a fever pitch?

Let's not get too crazy. Salinas beat Salinas as much as did Placer.

How many stops did the Hillmen get without the benefit of a penalty? One, maybe?

The Cowboys have had issues this year with penalties, but 130 yards in the first half, is just ridiculous. I think the big start turned out to be as much as a detriment as a benefit. I think they got way too jacked up over their start and lost their composure... to the point the coach had to call a timeout to tell them to calm down.

Still, when all was said and done, they were still in position to make it a 2-score game early in the 4th. Instead the coach made the inexcusable decision that left the door wide open. Placer then did what every good team does in that situation... walked right through it. That allowed them to stay within their offense and pound the ball. Granted, we don't know that the PAT would have been good (as we saw), but it still was a 90+% play vs. one that was closer to 50%. Down by two scores, I think they would have ended up having to pass more and they didn't really demonstrate they could do that without the threat of play-action. When Salinas knew they had to pass, the play-action did nothing and they got stops. I still think Placer scores at least once, but I wouldn't be so confident they would have scored twice (even down by 8, they were trying to score twice and couldn't).

I also think Placer is the last type of team you want to face in overtime. They're just too steady and even if Salinas made that PAT, I didn't see the Cowboys getting many (if any) stops that close to the goal line and the game could have ended up going into 4 or 5 overtimes. I was texting with FBAddict and NorCalSportsFan about how they maybe should have gone for two in overtime.

Placer is a very good team and good teams take advantage of mistakes. They played the cleaner game, by far. I have a hunch that if they clean up the few mistakes they did made last night, they may end up having an easier game in SoCal. I really hope they do.

Go Hillmen!

Forgot to check on this one last night. What a fantastic win for the Hillmen. Glad to see Coach Montoya get a shot at a State Bowl game.

To close the book on the overtime starting point- talked to a couple of game officials and apparently CIF sent out a memo stating that overtime would start on the 25 versus the 10. During the regular season the northern half of the state was starting from the 10 while supposedly the southern half was starting from the 25. Certainly some cause for confusion.

I'm in total shock.

Worst coaching decision I've ever personally seen made.

One of the announcers agreed with you. I'm guessing/hoping the other was on twitter, updating the score, and not paying attention. Especially since there had been a lengthy delay over one of their injured players.

Here's the Uncommon film covering this game. It really captured the intensity and spirit of this oh-so-close contest!
Edited to add: It's not up anymore, unfortunately.

GUYS...Winning a game in OT 43-42 can't be beat, but, Placer let the Cowboys jump off to a 21-0 lead and fought back and trailed 27-20 at the half...But, Placer for the season gave up 351 points by the defense, so it was up to the offense to make up the difference....And when you can battle to a 36-36 tie at games end, then what was the real difference was the PAT....It was a tough decision, but Salinas went for the kick rather then for two points...the Cowboy running game was working, so going for the two points would have been a good decision. Salinas came into the game with a 7-0 league record and a 11-2 for the season and their only losses were to Terra Nova 28-17 and were shutout by Milpitas 27-0..
One of the best playoff's for the season...
