Per the San Mateo Daily Journal, Steve Sell, head football coach at Aragon High School, has resigned that post after 24 seasons in the job. He will remain as the San Mateo school's athletic director. A search for a new head of the Aragon football program is underway.

Demographic changes are altering the Peninsula's sports landscape big-time. Public school coaches are faced with a declining number of football types from Daly City to Mountain View. The situation is not going to improve much. All of the signs are negative. Coach Sell no longer had a roster brimming with big, strong, fast fellows in relative abundance. Those days are long-gone. The program has been reduced from an A league entity to a B. Burlingame is in the same boat. Mills has been in serious decline for years. Terra Nova, El Camino, Jefferson and even Half Moon Bay are suffering. South San Francisco has resurrected itself, up to a point as a C league outfit. It's not pretty.

Oh, and it doesn't help when a stud enters the picture, avoids his public school and heads to a private/parochial program. Combine that familiar syndrome with those demographic changes and you have a formula for public school failure.
