Kind of surprised with this result, but night night for Talita Falepapalangi

Sequoia, now 25-4, has been somewhat under the radar. Their best non-league win probably came in late December when the Cherokees edged Bradshaw Christian of Stockton in the WCJ. BC won a Sac/SJ section crown tonight as well. Their best loss was against Lakeside of Elsinore (a Southern Section champion) in the same WCJ event. Sequoia's controlled half court power game (they feature a pair of 6-1 posts) is a lost art in today's high-octane, three-happy brand of ball. It is not sexy; you won't find highlights on ESPN. Their offensive approach is methodical, calculated and unsubtle. Their active matchup zone, the team's hallmark, controlled Paly's outstanding guard, Annika Shah, who came into the game averaging 24 points per outing. She was held to 4-of-21 shooting, one assist and one rebound, a total of 10 points. She had 30 Thursday vs. Menlo-Atherton. Free-wheeling, open-court opportunities were very few. The Cherokees, who allowed only one fast break basket over 32 minutes, needed just 35 points to win; they got 50, 34 of which came from that tall, physical duo inside. This was the school's first CCS girls' hoops title. It is also believed to be their first girls'CCS title in any team sport. But that was unconfirmed late Saturday.
