In recent years, Serra has been the clear favorite vs. the Crusaders. Not so in 2015. Riordan is unbeaten, all on the road. All of their wins have been one-sided. They are on an impressive roll, unlike anything seen on Phelan Avenue in some time. Serra is 2-2. The losses have been to a pair of perennial papal powerhouses, DLS and Bellarmine. The Saturday match at CCSF will be the 66th time these two all-boys schools have met in varsity football since 1951. Serra leads the series 37-28. By all rights, Riordan should be a slight favorite in this one. All of the momentum is on their side. We'll see.

Riordan a favorite? Against a coach with the pedigree of Walsh and an experienced staff vs young upstarts in their first year of being a var head coach, line, offensive and defensive coaches? A Serra team that was in the Open championship game last year with a ten year run of playoff and top state rankings against a team that was 1-9 last year with a win over the lowly SHC Fightin Irish? Against a Serra team that has battled DLS, Bellarmine and a southern CA power already? Against a team that went out and found the top Def and Off coordinators with their impressive resumes they could find? At a neutral field against a team with over 60 players on the roster? Against a team with new modern top flight playing and training facilities and big money boosters? No way colonel. The clear favorites and bullies of the block are the mighty Padres until they lose on the field.

Wow,what a matchup. What a statement the Crusaders would make with a win here.Game of the year in the WCAL to this point in the season IMO.

By all the HS pundits might not agree with you Colehenry. .Riordan is playing with house money though as I recall Obewon OneDnA stating back in the day," when Riordan plays with house money, they tend to double down".

Langdridge was always able to coach up this Riordan program up to slay the Padre. But maybe not now with Sainthood.

The key to Riordan is to keep the game right and hope their play makers excel, they can't think they have not arrived and they have plenty of season left.

The one motivation Riordan has that Serra is not used to since Mike coached....the feel the can win and the is where the trench mob stays in mind set

Padres are the overwhelming favorite until the Crusaders prove otherwise. Should be a great matchup of former coach vs pupil. Padre playmakers vs. Crusader playmakers on the fast CCSF turf. Game will be decided by which team commits the least turnovers and O/D line play.

I mostly breeze by Fubo's comments because he just slings stuff out there without much thought! But your catch is freakin' hilarious!

Nice to see a City team being a major factor in the WCAL. It's been far too long

I think you are speaking too soon in regards to Riordan being a major factor in the WCAL. This is coming from the first person who said they would beat SHP and the first one that said they would beat Mitty. They have been playing well, but I gave them the benefit of doubt in those two wins because I knew without bbk SHP is down and also Mitty is down despite them winning their first 3 games. I said before Los Gatos didnt know what to prepare for and that hurt them with Mittys new offense on the field for the first time. Mittys other two wins were against Palo Alto who was able to put up points against them and the other team has lost I believe two out of three. While I do see this Riordan team as talented with strong line play they still have to get past VC, who is 4-0, SF who is 4-0, Serra 3-2 (losses to only De la Salle and the Bells and the Bells who are 4-0. They would have to win at least 2 out of these 4 games to be considered a MAJOR factor in the WCAL. No doubt they are headed in the right direction, but I dont know about them being a major factor YET......

Nice move by the Riordan football program as they are inviting the local youth football programs' 7th and 8th graders to this Saturday's game. If they come wearing their team apparel or jersey - admission is free.

Last year Riordan led 3-0 at the half before getting outscored 28-0 in the 3rd in their loss at Serra. New attitude from the boys on Phelan Ave. this year who are on a mission. They will keep this close till the end and grind out a hard fought 31-30 win.

Riordan also played St. Francis tough on the road last year, losing 25-23 on a field goal in the final minutes. If they eliminate the early turnovers that put them in a 17 pt hole last year, they should be able to beat the Lancers @ CCSF this season.

Will you be the second person to say they will beat Serra? I already have stated they will go 7-0 in WCAL before the season started...

I called out both SHP and Mitty wins on Rmbr26's thread. People are saying whoever wins the turnover battle wins the game, well in that case you might as well give this win to Riordan because Serra hasnt cut down on turnovers for the last year and a half! I will have my prediction thurs. Btw there is no way they go 7-0 in league play because the Bells will.

Being back on this board allies me a variance in my picks this first year, but I call Riordan this game, not because they have more talent. I just think Riordan wants it more. The reality is Sera in not playing for anything this year, in regard to play offs, RiordN is pl\ying for respect, coach can't coach up for that

35-31 Riordan...Trench Mob has a stellar game

You are correct in saying Serra is not playing for anything this year, however there is NO WAY Coach Walsh doesn't have these guys fired up to play Riordan. This rivalry is different than when we play the City schools. This has a little venom attached to it and it stems to the coaching staffs. Not sure what it is about Serra, but even when I went there, playing Serra amped up practices that week, regardless of the sport. That said, like everyone (the smart prognosticators) are saying it will come down to turnovers (as last week did, when Mitty turned it over as they were going in for a 2 TD lead) and Walsh will have his team ready to face Riordan. Maybe if this game was a little more down the schedule, but they still have a chance to be co-champions of the League is not outright IF the Bells or any team in front of them falters. Live time updates will be appreciated as I will be in AZ. J² I still have the same cell # if you want to shoot me live updates :p

The San Jose Mercury News went so far as to move Riordan up to #3 in the CCS Rankings.

Saturday will determine if the Crusaders are deserving of that ranking. A huge challenge - looking forward to the game!

Jordan,

Don't you think the Crusaders are the clear favorite in div.III? I have completely jumped back on the crusader FB bandwagon, and I am calling them victors on Saturday. But honestly I saw these next two games and as top tier WCAL games or middle of the pack. Every other match after these two games are clear winnable. The first sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting different results. The three amigo's ( Joe, Vic & Mike) didn't want to go that route and changed it up rightfully,...too early to call Cinderella team? I still think other are not believing and don't see the boys on Phelan as serious threats....

Call me a homer...but, I could see Boone saying post game that the Fab Five articulated....we are going to shock the world

DIII won't be as loaded as DII but it will have Palma and SHP (who will be better than the first meeting) at the very least so probably a little early to be picking out a place for that banner...

2wcats,

Your absolutely right...you have to play the games. But the way Riordan snatch SHCP heart. I really hope it is a championship game of Palma vs. Riordan. I just hate seeing players giving up line SHCP did

Several questions:
Will Coach Fordon let the boys loose to make statement #3?
Will the Rev. Salvatore Cordileone drop by to support the two all boys football game?
Will Maureen Huntington be in attendance?

Will Patrick Daly make an appearance to watch the game or to pester the WCAL Photog Gal from down the Peninsula?

Riordan 14-13 or Serra 35 to 27

And just like that, BKWRDK lets loose of the pent up emotions that have claimed his soul.

Actually its Coach Curtin who I believe lets the dogs lose if you get there early enough to see warm ups. Its pretty entertaining and includes a purple sledgehamme lol. Worth the price of admission. Who knew Coach Fordon was speaking not only literally, but figuratively as well! Lets the dogs loose Coaches!!!

Dude you need a new history book....
Huntington is gone (July)....
Daly is gone (January)...
Cordileone doesn't come to games...
Fordon will do as he has done for 4 games and operate off his foundation of athletes, speed and line play....

I would argue that Serra is playing for a WCAL title for the third year in a row. I have heard that would be a school record for consecutive titles. If true, that's a pretty big historical incentive. There's more to football than just CCS, even if the CCS admin doesn't see it that way.

DC, see the end of my post and I acknowledged Serra is still playing for the League title if things go their way. Not disagreeing one bit as they STILL have plenty to play for. Incentives are in play for both teams! Should be fun!!!

I believe Serra has all the incentive to play hard and make a statement. Competing for a league title is their incentive to say shove it to CCS. Beside a WCAL title is more elusive than a CCS title in all sports.

Blue and Gold '82, thanks Padre_Man.

Trust me Patrick Daly is still hanging around. There are Ghosts around Phelan from the Monsignor down. Much of the damage has been overcome however Conti, Zumbado, Patrick and Vanastasio all tried to bring the Crusaders down.

HaHa how about that ONE athletic Director hire from Texas?

Kudos to Mike Gilleran for turning the corner in to a completely new direction.

Tomorrow's game will have a huge impact on the WCAL race with both Riordan and Serra having plenty of incentive to win...and it's only the second league game! Shaping up to be a great game!
