Sophomores are Versosa, Oliver, Jasmine Lee, Eade and Nelson. Juniors are Jadah Lee, Moniz, Po, and Gallegos. Seniors are Franceschi, Blecha, Scobie and Aurelio.

Is Piedmont a candidate for Open this year?
Not in the NCS OPEN unfortunately as they are a D4 team and they are ineligible for the NCS Open. For the STATE open I think they are still eligible which poses quite the dilemma for the CIF if Piedmont runs the table with only a loss or 2 and wins the D4 section.

Didnt Piedmont beat Mitty? They should definitely be in the open division for State playoffs.

You would think...
BUT based on the seeding criteria that
the schools voted in for the NCS Open the 6 NCS open teams get slotted as the top 6 teams out of the NCS for norcals....which would then mean that the highest Piedmont would get placed is the 7 seed out of the NCS which would mean somewhere around a 11 or 12 seed in D1 norcals.

Is it dumb? Yes.... but technically that's how it's supposed to work.

Hopefully they go against the grain and pick the best teams to represent NorCal in the state playoffs. As it looks Piedmont is in that discussion but as the season progresses that could change.

I understand why the NCS agreed to not allow D4 or D5 teams to be pulled up to the NCS Open Division. But there ought to be a provision to allow a team like Piedmont to opt up to the Open when they’ve got a team like this one. Especially if not being in the Open results in them ending up not being challenged in a lower division at State.

When was the last time a team complained about not being challenged in a lower division at State?

I can answer that...never.

The coach will say something like " we'll play anybody they put in front of us" ...

All the while laughing their way to a state title in a division they have no business being in... (cough cough) Oakland Tech...

I agree with the premise overall, but I think Oakland Tech has been the exception of wanting to be higher. They have been pushed down because of the stigma of the Oakland Section not being quality basketball anymore IMO.

well, not exactly "complaining", but in 1998 Campolindo, then defending 3-time DIV state champ, opted to play up in the DI state tourney. I remember that challenging the kids on the team was part of the conversation (a nice positive spin on complaining about not being challenged). I was impressed. Campo lost to then-powerhouse and defending state champ Berkeley in a close game. in subsequent years, I noticed that "opting up" was usually used to slip into a weaker division, although I'm open to other examples a la Campo.
