Looking at the big WCAL football picture, what the Wildcats pulled off Saturday in the foggy Sunset District, a skin-of-the-teeth, last-minute 14-13 upset of favored and unbeaten Serra, is a healthy sign for the league. No San Francisco school had won or shared a WCAL football crown since way back in 2006 when SI did it. Sacred Heart Cathedral has never captured a WCAL football championship. Riordan last grabbed a title in 2000. So SI's shared 2019 championship is a welcome development for the three SF schools and the league as a whole. The issue now becomes: Can this momentum be sustained. The five southern WCAL schools aren't going away. It's a tough challenge. But major kudos to SI for getting the ball rolling.

Yes the incredible performance by S.I. and Danny Ryan and the nail-biting win was huge for the S.I. program and good for the WCAL in general. Fans lose interest when the same teams have a strangle-hold on the league year after year and the games are not close - S.I. has not beaten Serra in 13-years and many of the games were Serra blow-outs.
One instance sums it up near the end of the game. Serra made the decision to go for the 2-point conversion and then quickly ran the play. The game announcer's of which at least one was an alumni were glum as the play started and as Sanchez was tackled one announcer stated "he's got it -he's in.." . As the refs quickly talked and signaled Sanchez was down prior to the goal line the announcers were in disbelief and started celebrating like kids at Xmas for several minutes with one saying it was the greatest win in S.I. hisotry. It was evident just how much this win meant to the entire S.I. community as the students swamed the field.
Just imagine had the 2-point attempt been good.

I imagine the same scenario if Riordan’s 2-point attempt had been good vs the Bells...
Good luck to all the WCAL playoff qualifiers!

Good point jordan as I was rooting for your Crusaders on that one - the game coming down to one play win or lose.

I didn’t think this game was that much of an upset, really. It had been clear that SI had been playing pretty good ball lately and that Serra could be inconsistent with the new QB. Combine that with coming down off of an emotional big win over VC and you had a classic trap game.

At this point, I’m looking to VC to take D-I.

WOW!!!

By the way, more kudos are due to the people who operate the SI communications department. Their YouTube channel worked perfectly Saturday. The sound and color were excellent. The camera work was very good. The production provided precisely what was intended for those who could not attend the Serra game in person. There are some who gripe about the announcers being biased and, at times, uninformed. OK. What is the school supposed to do, hire Troy Aikman and Greg Papa to work the game? Didn't think so. All in all, it's a big hat's-off to those involved in that YouTube effort. It's a service others schools, both private/parochial and public, might want to consider.

SI's home game broadcasts have a lot going for them. KC is a very likable play by play person. The two kids they have in there as well as analysts have a nice grasp of the game and will get better in time to let commentary naturally flow and limit the number of "umms and uhhhs" in their delivery. The one thing that annoyed me is the second the ball snaps, the camera guy hits the quick zoom switch and you lose sight of the whole play/field. Murphy field has great sight lines with no obstructions. At Kezar, those light poles are just awful for broadcasts when teams are in redzones.

Good for the City schools. Needed something like that desperately. The San Jose/ Peninsula schools have dominated that league for as long as I can remember . In football that is.

Very nice win. Can they do it again if they meet in the playoffs?

Just curious, there were 7 officials for the Serra-SI game. Does the league spring for the extra 2 officials or does SI as the home team pick up the tab. Were there 7 the previous week for Serra-VC?
