Something is cooking at Moreau.....

Doesn't seem like we have to wait to find out too much. Had a friend confirm that there was a new coach last night vs Newark. Turns out she also is the assistant principal and previous coach 🤷‍♂️

i saw the email. my coworkers daughter plays for the aau program. there is always the parents who think their child is better then he/she is and blame the coach.

what was the email about?? Hard to think that a parent complaint could unseat a coach mid season unless there was something else also going on...

Evidently there is a video (from last season) of the coach pulling a girl off the court by the jersey after she had run off the bench celebrating. He then turns and motions that could have got them a T. I find it hard to believe that is what got him fired but that is what everyone is saying

Is it Tony West?? if so, She was only there for 1-2 years then bounced.

Moreau Catholic girls basketball has a new leader for the remainder of the season, athletic director Erica Escalante confirmed.

Toni West was named the interim head coach and replaces Jose Alvarez, who helped lead Moreau Catholic to a North Coast Section Division 3 title last year, which was part of a 25-win campaign and a team that went a perfect 14-0 in the Mission Valley Athletic League.

Moreau is 11-8 overall and ranked No. 16 in the latest Bay Area Girls Basketball Rankings.

It is a video from 2021 where Jose grabs a players jersey after they ran on the court after a blocked shot and pulls her back to the bench so that they did not get a tech. The person I talked to said the clip was sent in recently potentially from a parent. But it is the only reason he was fired I believe. (It was not the parents of the kid in question in the video supposedly). No one had an issue with the incident for a year and change but now it is a problem which makes me assume disgruntled parent of a player. Jose to me is a high character guy that does a lot for Girls basketball. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

kid probably has life long mental health issues now. hopefully the catholic church can help her through this. thoughts and prayers.

That's horrible on so many levels. If the is not retained, I hope they open the search.

Jose is an amazing coach. I was his assistant for a few years with United. This has to be the makings of a “Karen”. I know at least 4 really good girls coaches that are considering either quitting or moving to the boys side. It’s hard enough for girls to find coaches that truly care about them. Losing Jose is a loss for all of girls basketball. They just made room for another parent to have too much control and an administrator that could care less about girls sports. Boys programs rarely fire good coaches because of a few parents. Instead, we tell boys to get in the gym and stop blaming the coach. Because administrators don’t care about female athletes, it’s easier to make bad parents happy and fire the coach. Put this in the books. Players will now start to transfer from MC. Their freshman class next year will be horrible. Jose did not deserve this.

As a parent who had two girls who were in Coach Jose's teams, I find this incredibly sad - the guy was and continues to be a class act, he is a very tough coach for sure (which, I might add, my daughters really needed), but I dont recall a single instance where he was not professional, and during the the decade that I've followed girls basketball in the Bay Area I can think of very very few coaches who probably spent the same amount of time and effort that he did on developing his players and teams. My guess is that he will land on his feet and some school will be lucky to have him.

Unfortunate to say the least. Good friend, father, dad , coach, mentor and Bulldog owner. Sad to say that its the sign of the times. Is not the first and will not be the last. Varsity Girls basketball is double edged sword, where your in catch-22 in many ways. Use the gym or not use the gym, have a feeder or can't have a feeder program, give everyone equal minutes and just throw out Match ups, Defensive Strategies, situational offensive sets. 11th player needs to start because we want to be fair to all,,,,,,,,just like in park and rec,,,,,need I say more. Let the dust settle and you will see this was a huge mistake.

They had a really solid frosh class this year. Will be interesting to see if they stick it out at moreau or if Jose ends up elsewhere if they follow or even if he doesnt if they go somewhere new. Usually don't like all the transferring but honestly seems like the right move in this situation

Its my understanding its a TWO year sitout if you transfer and follow a coach in the NCS.

Basketball community,

Thanks to all of you that have checked in on me and have showed me support in different ways. This has not been an easy time for my family, myself and many of the kids that were left wondering what happened to their coach. Something I love was taken from us.

However, I would love to clear some things up, I know the rumors have gotten pretty creative and in some cases just plain nasty. As stated by some on the board, this all came about from a video clip of a game in 2021 that was anonymously sent in (we later found out who it was), it was someone my family and I considered good friends. I am not able to post the video that was emailed because it contains minors and do not want to go down that rabbit hole.

What I can say is this, the persons that sent the anonymous email, their child was not a part of it. So from a safety prospective, they waited over a year to raise concern when no one else did. Including my assistant coaches or any of the dozens of people watching the game. Let's say this was a personal issue with my coaching and figured this video of me trying to control my bench from picking up a technical was enough to get me fired. No player was shoved, thrown to the ground and cussed at as some have heard.

After 4 and half seasons at the school with no formal complaints, other than your usual 'my kid deserves more minutes' and so on, they decided to let me go over a clip from 2021. I was not given a meeting to speak to the context of the video, it was a simple meeting to thank me for everything I did and that they had to part ways. I get it, it is a private school and PR and tuition are top of the list. Safety of children too, however for those of you that have seen it, you know no one was in harms way. Many parents spoke to administration about my character and how safe their kids are around me, but a couple parents got their way so that their kids can play more. Most of the parents have contacted me and are not happy with how this was all handled.

Some don't believe that this is the only reason, but it was the only excuse administration gave me during my meeting (I have a witness that was there), everything else were praises to all the success I brought a program that needed a fresh start. So as unbelievable and unrealistic as this may sound, it is true. You may always verify with the school if needed.

I suggest that if you have more questions you contact me directly, other people may not have all the facts, clearly.

Also - As far as me landing on my feet, eventually.

It's really sad to know how a school can bend over backwards for some parents or a handful of parents that are self-serving and have no loyalties to the school. Once they squeeze every bit of juice from you, they are onto the next ripe fruit to squeeze.

Great job at Moreau, you turned that program around and left it better than you found it

Coach, you are too good for the game to let this get you down. Just an awful way for the administration to treat you. The next place you land will be lucky to have you.

Catholic Schools are such hypocrites. They believe the Bible says one thing and does the complete opposite. If in fact this was the case, I feel bad that you had to endure that type of BS. I've always felt MC was a good school with a solid administration. They clearly missed the mark on this one.

I really hope that this wasn't orchestrated with the interim coach because she saw good players coming through the pipeline.

Unless here in the states we get an influx of nuns and brothers coming to teach classes for the peanuts they willingly accept, catholic schools will eventually die off.

Norcal, i think you might be reaching with the statement about the interim coach just a tad bit. I know her personally and she obviously was the choice by default. I have spoken with her, and she did not want to do it at all. In private schools you wear many job hats. it just happens to be that one of that hats she wore for the school was a basketball coach. You guys forget she was doing very well with the team in her time as well. She stepped down to pursue her admin career. Its a shoe in when you make a mid-season replacement suddenly. Toni supported Jose and the team.

From my understanding she is doing a good deed and helping a team in need. It's sad to say this was the doing of the spouse of an assistant coach who did not like the playing time her daughter was receiving. It's pathetic the school cannot see through this and allow empty threats to result in shoot-from-the-hip decisions.

I appreciate your take, but she was not doing well when she left. Jose really built the program to being respectable after Jack left. Fact is she has always been a 1-2 year and done at every stop. I get wanting to get into admin and maybe that was the plan from the beginning. and kuddos to her for taking over a nasty situation.

I agree 100%, Coach West has been nothing but supportive to the program the last 5 seasons. Matter a fact when I heard she was going to take the team over, I was very grateful and thought this was the best solution to a messy situation.
