St Mary’s Stockton knocks out Ponderosa

Yeah that’s a tough draw as a 16 seed. But still shocking given what most thought of Ponderosa.

The SJS seedings were awful. How does anyone have Saint Mary’s in a play in game just to get the 16 seed. They play a tough schedule and are damn good every time the playoffs roll around.

Easily the best 17th seed of all time. I told my buddy I don’t like this game at all. The sjs seedings Are a joke. Folsom a #2 seed? They are a 5-6 at best this year in d1.

hats off to st Marys. Incredible win and who knows! March madness is around the corner.

Not a stunner at all. There were a lot of people not excited about Ponderosa. Good team but untested (although they did beat a decent Burbank team). Your schedule will make or break you. Ask any coach who they don't want to see in Feb/March and they will tell you St Marys. Ken Green is so hard to coach against because he is constantly adjusting throughout the game. And the kids are ready, and it doesn't matter home or away. Nope not shocking at all.

No. This was a damn fine team. They blasted Folsom by 28 and smacked every SFL team as well. They beat Elk Grove and Burbank as well. Undefeated league with 2 other good programs (oakmont and placer). Just 1 Game. You don’t come to play or have an off night and a team like at marys has nothing to lose. That 27-0 monkey gets heavy.

I gotta think there season is over but with at large birth stuff I have no idea now. I would think they needed to win at least 1…

I know some people are going to argue this point, but coaches know a year, maybe even 2 years ahead if their going to have a team like this (27-0) or something close, why not schedule accordingly? Play some state or section playoff contenders out of the area, 23-4 or 22-5 and battle tested is better. 27-0 are for National Powerhouses with NBA prospects. No disrespect they were good, but I just don't get it sometimes. Put yourself in harm's way, your staff and your players.

Good point on the 2-years ahead thing….

These Pondo kids have played together for probably several years. They had to know a powerful team was gonna show up this year (with a possible exception if Bliss had a big growth spurt in the last year or so).

Ponderosa Beat Elk Grove without Dajon Lott playing who is a 6’9 center that would have made a big difference in that game.

Pondo will 100% for sure be in CIF. As will Arcata in D4 who got knocked out in the 1st round as well.

CIF usually has an at-large per division and usually the highest seeds get those at larges.

Now where will CIF place them is anyones guess. I would say top 5 seed in D2 or D3.

Pondo Does not deserve an at-large bid in the state tournament. go out and play better competition and then you’ll be better prepared to win your first round playoff game against the 16th seed

I don’t see how Arcata gets in. For NCS teams in D4 & D5 only the 4 teams that make the semis advance. NCS only has 1 at large berth, and that goes to the top seeded semis loser in D1 through D3.

Does anybody know for sure if they are out? Or is there some small window crack open? Seems crazy to me your could lose in round 1 and still get an at large.

James Logan was the 1 seed in NCS D1 and lost in the 1st round a couple of years back and still got selected as an at large team.

Im pretty sure the sections can choose whomever they deem worthy for the at large selections.

The seedings in D1 and D2 show the flaws in the Max Preps ranking algorithms. The CIFSJS should use some human common sense in the seedings. Clearly based on record Pondo was a #1 seed, but SM definitely was not a play-in team. Further EG and Jesuit should not be playing in the second round. They could/should have moved Jesuit to the top bracket so Delta League schools wouldn't have to play each other before third round.
D1 more of the same especially from CIFSJS after Folsom suffered a loss to Oakridge and Modesto Christian to Lincoln the Friday before selections.
With all that said, you still need to just win to consider your team the best.

This quote from the NCS site was recently posted on the girls’ side. It states the at large berth can come from Divisions 1-3 only. So I’m afraid Arcata is done.

North Coast Section (NCS): Total of 25 Teams per State CIF Blue Pages
All six teams competing in the Open division (6 teams)
Finalists in Divisions 1 - 3 (6 teams)
and the final four (4) teams (semifinalists) competing in NCS Divisions 4-6 will receive automatic berths (12 teams)
The 25th entry will be assigned to the highest seeded (smallest number) semifinal losing team in Divisions 1-3 only.

According to Sac-Joaquin Section playoff info below they have a chance. Ponderosa currently ranked #3 in section on MaxPreps as of this moment. Would qualify if all higher seeds win Monday and it would mean keeping either Sheldon or Lincoln-S out of NorCals.

The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section qualifies 23 teams to the NorCal Tournament. The winner, runnerup, both semifinal losers in Divisions I-V of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Basketball Tournament will advance to the CIF Northern California Regional Basketball Tournament. The winner and runner-up in Division VI of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Basketball Tournament will advance to the CIF Northern California Regional Basketball Tournament. The last spot will be filled by 1 atlarge birth according to the MaxPreps rankings.

100%. Is a stretch. The one at large bid usually goes to a D1 school to back fill a D1 spot vacated by the finalist going to the NorCal Open.
If they give Pondo a bid after losing to a 17 seed that got rolled by 20 in second round then why even have playoffs.
The seeding are already a joke in themselves. They went strictly by Max Prep ratings (flawed) with no eye test.

To me, if they are going to give out a “second chance “ by way of an at large bid, Pondo would deserve it. They had one bad game. Lost 1 game overall. How is a team with more losses on the year more deserving? Personally I say no at large bids but since they have it Pondo is as good as any to get it.

That’s ridiculous, if Ponda had went out and played some of the big boys they wouldn’t have been undefeated. If you lose in the first round to the 17th seed who then turns around and gets blown out by an 8th seed you don’t deserve anything. Lincoln would beat Pondo by at least 15, Lincoln deserves the at large bid and Pondo deserves an end of the year banquet and a good luck next season

They deserve nothing. They lost in the first round. You don’t get an at large big when you lose in first round. But considering how badly the SJS screwed up the seedlings from jump they probably will give it to them.

Terrible seeding and I really enjoyed this pondo team but a loss in round 1 by #1 seed can’t be tolerated. It’s like UVA a few years back in ncaa tourney . You gotta own it and get better.

If true, no way Pondo “deserves” it over a Lincoln team that lost by one in the SECOND round that also beat MC and lost to Campo late by 2 while also beating the same St Marys team twice by double digits.

I’m going to say Lincoln and Pondo will most likely both get in. Somebody else will get stiffed, Ponderosa will be a 12-16 seed in D2. Lincoln will be top 8 D1. It could happen.
