Cal Hi Sports just named Stuart Hall senior Brandon Lum their D5 player of the year. A great honor and first player in Hall history to win a Cal Hi Sports State POY Award!

Earlier this week they named Hall Coach Charley Johnson D5 coach of the year.

I know the negative comments will come naturally, but I thought these two deserved recognition for their accomplishments.

It should be noted that during the Mt Shasta game, there was no mention made but Coach J let a Mt Shasta player have their moment after the Hall took a big enough lead. Stuff like this often goes unrecognized, but their is more to coaching then just coaching a game.

where is he going to play in college at?

He’s going to Oregon…..so yes even I will admit his chances of ever playing again are slim.

but with his shot, he’ll give a ton of those Oregon walk on kids a run for their money….if he chooses to walk on,

did he have any offers to play anywhere?

Stuart Hall struggled a lot early and our conference was very tough. I don’t think he got any offers.

I’m hoping he’ll try and walk on because his shooting ability is unique. And in his last two games he proved he could shoot lights out in college/pro settings by having big games at Kezar and then Golden One.

Problem of course will be size. But like I said he was easily the 2nd best shooter in the city last year behind KJW. He just bloomed late.

so a d5 player of the year in a state the size of CA with good grades has zero athletic scholarship offers? interesting.

Anyone know of any D-5 Bay Area players that have gone D-1 in college since Noah Springwater went to Columbia from Uni? Uni has had some guys go to top D-3 schools. Williams, Emory, and MIT. I think D-1 might be a reach these days from D-5.

d2? something?

Darnell Robinson, 6-11 powerhouse pivot from Emery. Arkansas recruit. Played pro as well.
Wow, that name brings back memories. I played against DR in a pre-season game in November 1992 (Mission High SF) at Emery High. Arkansas University Head Coach Mr. Nolan Richardson was in the audience/stands. We fouled him out early in the game and he had 10 points. He was a cool guy. I wonder where he is now.

Not just size. Athleticism, quickness, defense, speed of D1 college basketball, ability to run a team as a point guard. There's more than just being able to put the ball thru the hoop in D1.

Jade Smith went from SJND, at the time a D5 school, and played 5 years at Pepperdine

Was one of the first names I thought of. Beleive he’s regarded as one of the biggest busts ever. Sad, a ton of potential.
man thats a list. i dont think him as much tho. bowie, oden, bennett, darco, olowokandi were far more promising

When looking at being a walk on at a big university, a-lot of factors have to add up. Usually a 6ft kid if playing at such a level as a guard is super fast and can find ways to score around the basket and not just the outside. And one has to take into factor the defensive side, strength is a big part of that for smaller guards.

Look at UCLA for example, they have 6’7, 6’5, 6’4 guards. Arizona has 3 6’7, 2 6’6 and 1 6’5 guards. USC has more 6’4 and below guards, but those guards are on full scholarship as they went to Sierra Canyon, Fairfax, transfer from Memphis, Damien, and a transfer from Rice.

So overall is walk on a possibility, absolutely. But it is hella tough in large conferences. USC has a 5’8 senior guard who transferred in and got 4 minutes the total season.

The kid could probably play at a D2 or D3 and start easy, but maybe he cares more about the college experience, and that is 100% fine. Oregon is an awesome school, and if he doesn’t play he can still enjoy the overall experience like all UofO students get to enjoy.

I personally think the game is headed towards guards being 6’4 minimum in higher leagues and divisions. The center position is becoming more obsolete and being replaced by another forward position in its place.

You’re saying Sam Bowie was a bust? Dude was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan for christs sake :D he had to be good. Yeah Robinson is probably not a big of a flop as those guys, but for all the hype, dude never set foot on a NBA court.

I knew a high school football kid from SF. He had many D2 offers but Oregon told him you have a good walk on chance. He told a buddy of mine, all the gear they give the athletes, I am all for it. He went to Oregon, made it, and put in some time as a senior.

Not the bay but NorCal D4-D5 Modesto Christian had Chuck Hayes, DJ Seeley, Richard Midgley, and Reeves Nelson off the top of my head

Huge bust! I was talking about this before. Chris Washburn like. He was one of highest recruited players in Bay Area history at emeryville.

Let’s be real. Those were elite open level teams. Some of the best teams I’ve ever seen in norcal over the past 30 years. It’s like saying st Joe’s was d5. They were with kidd but played d1.

Rajkovic went to Seattle if we count Branson as d5. Jeremiah Kreisberg from Head Royce was D1 around same time as Springwater.
