As of Feb. 9, here is a possible eight-team NorCal Open Division tourney lineup:

1. Mitty vs. 8. Miramonte or McClatchy (with Cruz) or SMS
2. Carondelet vs. 7. Salesian
3. O'Dowd vs. 6. Cardinal Newman
4. Pinewood vs. 5. Sacred Heart Cathedral

If Clovis West is shifted to the North, they would be either the No.1 or No.2 seed, dropping everyone else down one notch. One-loss Menlo-Atherton, without the Kailahi sisters, no longer appears to be at the NorCal Open level (which should help them in Division I). Unbeaten Santa Clara has not played a challenging schedule and plays in a CCS B league. But they may be slotted in the CCS Open tourney anyway, as long as they remain unbeaten.

Feel free to chime in at your leisure.

Five NCS teams, limit of four per section. I would anticipate the section numbers with NCS 3, CCS 3 & SJS 2. CN and Salesian could be favorites to win d4 & d3.

and would they try to avoid having teams from the same section playing each other first if possible?? PW and SHC look lined up for a CCS open semi against each other

I think the Open is wide open this year more then any year before. Some teams are playing at full strength for the first time. They are the unkown teams. What do I mean by unknown teams. These are team that where good already how much better can they get!!!! This is a time in the year that teams need to be at there best. There is only one team this year game in an game out stands out that is Mitty. So with that my picks for the open is as follow.

1)Mitty
2-8) ???????

Remember this a different committee pick Nocal. They might not pick by how you played last or up to now. They problem going to judge on how good did a team do during Sections. The only section that they know the can pick 2 teams from is the CCS OPEN Division. These is a great concept to have an Open Division in each section.

OK. Then go with McClatchy as No.8 provided Cruz is playing.
I like Lincoln of Stockton. They are the only Sac-Joaquin section school that has beaten St. Mary's of Stockton, and they are ranked higher in MaxPreps than McClatchy.

As a matter of fact, the last time St. Mary's of Stockton lost to a Sac-Joaquin section school was March 2, 2007, against Sacramento High, 71-74, at Sacramento. Amazing!

Another way to look at it:

Definitely in:

CCS Open finalists

90% in:

NCS D1 champion
NCS D3 champion
CCS Open semifinalist (either SHC or Pinewood)

75% in:

SJS D1 champion (except Folsom, which would have to opt in, thus 75%)
SJS D2 champion
NCS D2 champion
NCS D4 champion
NCS D3 runnerup

50% in:

SJS D1 runnerup

33% in:

Pleasant Valley

Questions: Would the committee take four NCS teams and just one SJS team? That might be the "right" thing to do, but it also might ruffle some feathers in this first year of the committee.

How many losses is too many? If SMS loses again, say in the D1 final, will eight losses disqualify them? If SHC loses to Pinewood in the CCS Open semis, will eight losses be too many? Would the committee take a seven-loss D2 team from SJS?

Will the committee default to selecting Miramonte as a D2 champ (assuming the win) over Cardinal Newman as a D4 champ, or will computer and human rankings trump the divisional hierarchy?

It will be interesting to see if SHC gets in with all of its losses to Open teams. If they beat Pinewood in the CCS Open there in for sure possibly with a top 4 seed.

I think there's a likely scenario where SHC beats Pinewood in a CCS Open semi-final but is not a top 4 seed in the NorCal Open. Mitty and Cardinal Newman have both beaten SHC twice this year. If BOD and Carondelet win their NCS sections, they will be seeded above SHC. If SMS wins out, they'll be in and seeded above SHC. So in that scenario, I could see SHC and Pinewood as the 6 and 7 seeds in the Open bracket. That would probably leave Miramonte or Sacramento (are they D2 in the SJS playoffs?) as the 8 seed since neither has beaten another Open team.

I think the only way SHC gets a top 4 seed in NorCal Open is if they win the CCS Open.
