Moreau, the 11th seed, trailed until the final five minutes of the fourth quarter and withstood a miraculous buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Dougherty Valley guard Kenny Cloud that sent the game into overtime.
Tuesday’s contest was choppy as the teams combined to shoot 78 free throw attempts. Dougherty Valley star Jalen Stokes fouled out late in the fourth quarter and Cloud picked up his fifth infraction in the opening minute of overtime.
...
It was clear early that the game was going to be called tight by the officiating crew. The first two quarters consisted of both teams taking turns getting fouled and shooting shots at the charity stripe.
By the end of the first half, the teams combined to shoot 31 free throws.
Dougherty Valley took a comfortable 10-point lead into halftime after Cloud netted a ridiculous one-legged 3 from the right corner at the buzzer that got the home crowd rocking three days after the Wildcats routed Redwood to win the NCS Division I crown.
78 free throws. That's wild.Here's the Merc's article on the game: https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/03...ugherty-valley-cif-norcal-basketball-tuesday/
Some notable parts...
Tells me two things. First, that if the tweet about Moreau taking 42 free throws is correct, that DV took 36, meaning this wasn't one team being gifted a win by the refs (as has been said about the Moreau/CN game). Also, sounds like DV needed two different buzzer beater 3's just to send this game into OT. In a game where the refs were calling it tight and getting to the line wasn't exactly a challenge. Not what I would call great coaching...
Damn - I should have went there instead of the SRV game but I would have been so frustrated by all the whistles that I would have lost my mind. Not sure how the players nor the refs didn't adjust somewhat to all those foul calls. The DV coach must have been melting down on the sidelines which might have been worth the admission not sure. Unfortunate that the game devolved into that which is never good in my book. Maybe that's Moreau's strategy or MO to muck it up as I've watched DV quite a few times and they are more of a finesse team than bunch of bruisers.78 free throws. That's wild.
On Twitter you can see the dv coach say something to the official when the horn went off.Damn - I should have went there instead of the SRV game but I would have been so frustrated by all the whistles that I would have lost my mind. Tough night for the EBAL with DV and Dublin getting bounced at home and SRV barely pulling out the home win. Lots of upsets in D1 with Liberty also bouncing Clovis North.
