On the eve of its Central Coast Section Division III playoff opener, the entire Hillsdale starting five quit the team (or were asked to leave) this week. The players sat in the bleachers Thursday night and watched their teammates (varsity reserves and some JV kids) get beaten at home by Live Oak, a team Hillsdale easily defeated weeks ago. The exact reasons for the defections (or firings) were unclear but reports of serious disputes with the new (and relatively inexperienced) coaching staff were rampant. All in all, the situation was ugly.

Very depressing ... usually in extreme cases such as this one, there's plenty of blame to cover both sides. Sad, though ...

Another high seed playoff team took a body blow as well: A four-year starter decided to go on vacation over winter break rather than play a postseason game, and not surprisingly the team got upset (in more ways than one).

Just out of pure curiosity, I did some sleuthing it was pretty easy to find out which kids were the ones not on the roster anymore as they already updated their maxpreps but not their school site.. one of the girls stated on twitter: "when you and 5 other teammates quit the basketball team right before ccs :)" ... the smiley face could be in jest, but doesn't look good.. maybe their reasons were justified, we may never know. First year coach butting heads?? Wonder if she'll be back for year 2

This is very unfortunate and hate to see happen to any schools.
The coach is a local product (Aragon) and recently finished playing at Santa Clara.
Mike Ciardella had this group of players for the last 2 years and seemingly had a great run.

The coach is not the first nor the last to find that playing at Division I level does not prepare you for coaching at the high school varsity level. It's a lot more than basketball ...

it doesn't prepare you for coaching at any level.. knowing and being able to convey what you know are very different things..

Good points all around. The entire affair is really unfortunate. Repercussions are coming. Probably sooner rather than later.

The school can't sit back and do nothing. As far back as most of our memories go, this is unprecedented in PAL history in any sport, boys or girls. Something has to give, on the players' side or the coaches' side or both sides. It's a mess. By the way, where are the parents in all of this? Where is the administration? What about the remaining Hillsdale players left in the lurch by the situation? Weren't those youngsters placed in an untenable position by what happened? And why did those departing players leave at this time? Why not a month ago, two months ago? The whole thing is disgraceful all around.

So assume for arguments sake the coach did nothing wrong (because obviously if there was wrongdoing on that side the remedy is easy).. Assume the kids found a reason, just or not, to quit and got their friend/s to follow.. How can the school punish a kid for quitting a sport? With the exception of not letting them try out next year if they are not a senior, what can they do? Are you going to suspend a kid from school for quitting sports? That sounds backwards to me. I agree that it's incredibly unfair and undeserved to the kids left stranded by their teammates, so I'm not trying to back the kids for what they did. And I second the questioning of the parents.. I know my mom would have whooped my butt until I begged to be on the bench instead of in the stands with her.

Don't forget it wasn't long ago that the entire varsity team quit on Mike Allen at gunderson. Not saying this is the same situation, but I don't recall any repercussions for the kids and coach Allen is still going strong. I hope details arise soon

Both Boys and Girls at Westmoor. Most were the Seniors. Different reason for both but the fault is all around.
Hillsdale has been a problem for some time now. 3 different coaches for this 2017 class. Finally over is all I'm saying. I give the Hillsdale Head Coach Artevia Lilomaiava lot of credit
for hanging in there.
