WCAL 2017: NORCAL PLAYOFFS

Mitty will win a close game because of their shooting. SHC is tough at home.

Bellarmine by 20. Riordan struggles to score.

SF and Serra will be the best FOOTBALL game of the night. Bring your pads.

SI and VC will shoot 60 threes . SHould be exciting and uptempo. SI in a close game

I'll take Mitty by 14+... want to see how SHC will respond to the loss at the Bruce, hope ur right and they toughen up at home.

Serra wins by 8

Bells by 20+

Cats by 12

Mitty is tough inside. Monarchs by 18
SF- two contributors back from injuries. Too many guards SF by 10
Bells by 30- no resistance from Crusaders. Will get torched in the post opening up the whole floor for the Bells
SI- by 10. If DeLucca was coaching it would be a very close game

Unfortunately, I see a big letdown after the SI game. I don't think Sean McKay will have these guys all of a sudden play team ball and win instead of playing 1 on 5 and toss-up bricks.

I'll be at the soccer game. At least they'll win.

Bellarmine 80
Riordan 61

St. Francis 66
Serra 59

St. Ignatius 71
Valley Christian 53

Mitty 60
SHC 39

Week 3

Game of the Night 1/18/17

SI (4-0) @ Mitty (3-1) -
The Monarchs are back on track after beating SHC by 20. I think they get this game at home against a talented SI squad who played Monday (and got a win) against Oakland High in a MLK Classic event.

Other Games:

St. Francis (2-2) @ Riordan (0-4) - The Lancers are coming off a tough physical win against Serra. Will be complete opposite against Riordan on the road. The Crusaders got drubbed at Bellarmine, giving up 51 in the first half.

Valley Christian (1-3) @ SHC (0-4) - The Irish will get their first league win of the season Wednesday night as VC comes to town minus Coach DeLuca. Valley really hasn't impressed me and I have been slightly disappointed so far.

Bellarmine (4-0) @ Serra (2-2) - I think Serra matches up well with the Bells. Will be a close game and if Rapp was on the sidelines I'd pick the Padres. I'm picking the Bells.

Bells won on a buzzer beater 37-34

SI beats Mitty 70-66

St Francis beats Riordan

Valley gets the win vs the Irish

Any games summaries? Was the SHC vs Valley game at least close?

Riordan had a 1 pt lead after the 1st and trailed the Lancers by 6 at the half. The wheels completely fell off in the second half and the Lancers cruised to a victory. Missed open 3's and unforced turnovers continue to plague this young and vertically-challenged squad. Coach Buck has it tough this season, but his players continue to play hard and keep their heads high.
SI continues to impress me as they are a very good team as everyone knows their roles and are in lock step both offensively and defensively.

St. Francis outscored Riordan 25-6 in the third quarter.

Darrion Trammell had 19 points for SI in win over Mitty. Riley Grigsby had 28 points in the loss.

The VC game was close (21-19 Irish at the half) but Valley had a big third quarter and an 11-point lead going into the 4th. I'm at a loss as to know what's wrong with these guys. I can only guess they just don't run enough team plays and resort to one-on-five ball. They should bring Tim Burke back.

[It's an opinion, Cross-eyed Rival. Try posting one of your own and leaving it at that. The "ignore" button works both ways, foob.]

Good summary as always Jordan. Riordan had no answer for Logan Johnson in the open court in the second half. Dude drove to the hole with impunity as Riordan has zero rim protection! Mihanovic is nice as well and helped break the game open in the 3rd quarter with deep 3s. Props to the fans who braved the monsoon conditions to come out and catch the game.

I thought that SI had a real good chance of beating Mitty. They are better than most people think especially with Trammel playing at a Trevor Dunbar level. Not surprised by VC beating SHC either.

James Chun appears to be really struggling with his game this season...Buckner is even sitting him out for long periods of time. The combination of being the marked man by every team, his young and/or vertically-challenged teammates and struggles with his shooting stroke as he has added at least 10lbs of muscle has led to disappointing performances in league-play. I heard there is an out-of-state newcomer (due to family situation) this semester? Any truth to that?

Yes - I've heard there is a newcomer practicing with the varsity but not sure if he's eligible to play this year. I believe he is in the 6'2" - 6'3" range so he would give them a bit more size / athleticism which is greatly needed.

Week 3

Game of the Night 1/21/17

SHC (0-5) @ Riordan (0-5) -
An all City affair between the two winless teams. I'll give Riordan the edge since they are playing at home. If they drop this game it may be 0-14 this season.

Other Games:

Mitty (3-2) @ St. Francis (3-2) - Mitty is coming off a tough home loss to a red hot SI team 70-66. Even though St. Francis is at home I don't think they match up well with the Monarchs. Mitty wins a close one.

Bellarmine (5-0) @ Valley Christian (2-3) - The Warriors had a convincing road win against SHC on Wednesday night. Bellarmine won on a desperation heave at the buzzer at Serra scoring only 37 points. I believe they will double that Saturday night in a big win over VC.

Serra (2-3) @ St. Ignatius (5-0) - I don't see the red hot Wildcats dropping this one at home to the Padres. I think they take care of business which sets up a great game against Bellarmine next week for 1st place.

SHC wins a close game 49-48
St. Francis will be playing at full strength at home. 68-64
Bells- 70-52
Bad match up guard- wise for Serra. SI 58-50

Nate Robinson is in street clothes. Not sure why. Looks OK.

Now somebody turn down those deafening subwoofers...

Irish didn't run a single set play.

Riordan squeaks first WCAL win vs the Irish 61-53. Robinson out with an injured wrist. Dunbar was in street clothes too. New Riordan player awaiting CCS approval. He looked good holding the flag during the national anthem. Lol! These teams are virtually mirror images of each other in their rosters with the exception of Carter. Nice crowd at the Forum even without the band. The subwoofers were the replacement. Lol!

Letting the flag drag on the floor is a big no-no. I wasn't kidding about the subwoofers either. Even earplugs weren't enough.

Per ARHS Stats:
Leading Scorers

AR: James Chun 28, Moises Sandoval 19
SHC: Emmett Neal 15, Gary Hudson 13

Yes, large crowd. Riordan had many students in clusters (not together); SHC had many parents and older alums (ie. not many students). Yes, SHC very unimaginative..play along perimeter, try to isolate, dribble drive, throw it up or dish out for a 3. If 3s not going, well the end is predictable. Strictly, AAU stuff.

Biggest choke job I've ever seen. Irish didn't run a single set play.

It was an entertaining game and the young players for SHC played well. It just came down to execution at the end and Riordan got the better looks down the stretch off their motion and cuts than SHC did by standing there and trying to go 1 on 5. Neal, Monroe and Hudson were working off each other early and through most of the game. I couldn't believe my eyes but Carter actually posted up and had some nice finishes around the rim. It's probably one of the most solid games I've seen him play. He had a missed layup that really hurt their momentum which was the easiest look he had all night on a fast break. Chun had 28 and could have probably had 40. He missed some open looks tonight that I've seen him consistently hit before. I caution to say that I liked the little improvement, Fight and effort that SHC showed even without Robinson and Dunbar. However it could have been fool's gold given that Riordan is also lacking on talent and struggling in league. At this point all that is left is to fight to not go 0 for league and win some games in CCS.

In my opinion, a team that wins may 1-2 games in league and finishes under .500 shouldn't even qualify for sectionals. This is coming from era when there was only one division and only league champs went on. Nowadays, at the very least .500 in league or overall.

Gotta somewhat agree with you CityVibesII. Makes those 6 consecutive Riordan championships (5 undefeated) along with 6 different Crusaders as POY in the 80's all the more impressive. You will not see that again.
If you look at the landscape today, both SHC and Riordan (and in fact VC) were in the bottom third in league play last season, but ALL three teams played very well in sectionals with both SHC and Riordan posting double digit wins until they met for the CCS Div 3 Title game. Both teams went to the semis in NorCals with SHC leading BOD before squandering their lead at home and injury-depleted RIordan team losing by a close margin on the road to the eventual champ, Manteca, who blew out BOD for the NorCal title and eventually win State. Goes to really tell you how competitive the league is. Not neccesarily the top teams in the State, but ALL worthy opponents to the best teams outside the league.

The Crusaders went undefeated in round robin play in THREE seasons in the 80's, 1985, 1986 and 1987. They won 39 straight WCAL games at one point. They did not go 5 undefeated seasons. 6 straight POYs in the late 80's and 1990.

I stand corrected. Thanks Coach! 6 straight WCAL titles with 6 different POYs in the late 80's and 1990.

Archbishop Riordan won 38 WCAL League Games in a row, from the end of the 1984 league season, until the beginning of the 1988 league season.
From 1985, until the beginning of the 1988 league season, Archbishop Riordan won 44 games vs. WCAL teams in a row. This includes playoff games played vs. the other Schools in the WCAL.

Saint Ignatius beat Riordan in the second to last WCAL League Game in 1984 and the C.C.S. Championship Game in 1984.
Saint Ignatius beat Riordan in the second WCAL League Game in 1988 to end both game winning streaks vs. the WCAL.

Archbishop Riordan lost 3 league games in 1988 to Saint Ignatius, Archbishop Mitty, and Saint Francis.
Archbishop Riordan lost 1 league game in 1989 to Saint Francis, in December lost the 3rd Place game in the Crusader Classic to Saint Francis.
Archbishop Riordan lost 1 league game in 1990 to Archbishop Mitty, in December beat Saint Francis in the Crusader Classic Championship Game.

From 1985 to 1990, Archbishop Riordan lost only 7 times to WCAL teams, Saint Francis won a C.C.S. Championship game in 1988. Archbishop Riordan won 58 WCAL League Games, and lost 5 WCAL League Games. Archbishop Riordan won 85 games vs. WCAL teams, and lost 7 games vs. WCAL teams in this 6 year period.

Game of the Night 1/25/17

St. Ignatius (6-0) @ Bellarmine (6-0) -
The game we've all been waiting for...both teams are undefeated and rolling right now. How do the Bells slow down SI's Trammell? Will the Bells be able to control the tempo? I expect a barn burner in San Jose and I will give the edge to the home team Bells.

Other Games:

St. Francis (4-2) @ SHC (0-6) - The Lancers are coming off a huge win against Mitty at home and the win keeps them in sole possession of 3rd place. I suspect they will still be there after beating a short handed SHC on the road.

Mitty (3-3) @ Riordan (1-5) - The Crusaders got their first league win beating crosstown rival SHC at home. Took my nephew to the game and there was a pretty good crowd. I was looking forward to seeing the band play and was disappointed that they weren't there. Contrary to reports James Chun jumpshot looked completely fine as he had 28 points, about 4-5 threes, with very efficient shooting. The Irish did not have Melo Dunbar nor Nate Robinson and the game was close until the very end.

Valley Christian (2-4) @ Serra (2-4) - I would be thoroughly shocked if Serra dropped this game at home. Valley gave up 79 to Bellarmine which Serra held to 37 two days earlier.

Riordan vs Mitty to be broadcast live from The Forum this Wednesday @ 7:30pm on BAOSN.tv with a replay on Sat, 5pm on Comcast Hometown Network (Comcast Ch 104 and Ch 819 HD).

Trammel has ice in his veins. Nothing seems to bother him on the court. Think he gets the best of Athens and The Bells. SI OT- 76-71
SF by 20. I think are starting to hit the ride stride at the right time. 74-55
Mitty by 12 unless Chun goes for 30. Mitty has to much size. Bet they win rebound total by at least 15. 67-55
Valley Christian in the upset. No Rapp yet, valley sneaks by 57-56

Mitty lights it up from 3 in the 3rd as the Monarch lead was cut down to 1. Lead mushroomed to 20 mid 3rd with the subs making the final score respectable. Nice to see the starters off the bench yelling encouragment when the reserves were cutting into the lead. Coach Buck has this young squad fighting until the final buzzer. In the end, the vertically-challenged Crusaders couldn't match the inside-out game once the Monarch got hot from the perimeter. Final M 63 R 54

SI was down 8-10 the whole game until the last 2 minutes. Jadon Roberts was a beast! Close to a double double if he didn't have one. He fouled out with 1:00 left. SI had a chance to win in the end. 55-56 Should be a good rematch in a few weeks

I believe he's been hurt since the Bruce-Mahoney game.

He got hurt at the game vs Valley... honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he sits out another couple weeks. Has benefitted the younger guys getting some run. I was able to watch the game last night vs St. Francis and silly turnovers were made against a 2-2-1 press and coach had to end up using 4 time outs in the first half. Very hard to watch.

As far as the SI vs Bells game that was a great game. Came down to the last possession and in 3 weeks they will play another close one in the sunset and I'll be looking forward to seeing that. Great effort and comeback by the cats. Bells got the stop they needed.

A team that struggles to score 50 points a game and runs no real offensive plays is very hard to watch. I would make my way to a couple home games a year just to check out the team but SH would have to pay me come watch this team. I'd rather go see SI play because who doesn't like to watch competent and competitive basketball? Having said that SI was in this same place during Marcaletti's first year. In fact, I think they were worse offensively than this year's SH team. I know some games they couldn't even break 40 points.

I recall SHC going 1 or 2 wins in league once in mid 90s and upset St. Francis in first round of WCAL playoffs. But that was in an era before SHC started "encouraging" basketball players to come to SHC. To see the product today is definately not entertaining to the casual fan, let alone a disconnect with the student-body, considering now in an era they encourage basketball players to come to the school. They did have a good run. Just coming full circle. I did say we shouId give this coach and his staff benefit of doubt. Would be a little easier to except if they ran a decent offensive scheme other than trying to out athletic their opponent. Just does not work without the horses.
