Is this a joke? A coach is supposedly fired for bringing up JV players to play on Varsity and parents were upset the JV lost their last game and went 6-3 instead of 7-2; so the coach gets fired??? SMH...

Sorry if I missed it earlier. I mean is thisxwhat we have come down to? Parents dictating how coaches run their programs?

If that is the case very lame. The point of the JV team is develop players to play at the varsity level?

If parents are that concerned about the JV team record, Piedmont has a very strong bird calling program the parents can put their kids in instead.

To some parents the game is a matter of life and death

You can't force a kid to play up w/o the parents giving the ok. Has to be more info or is it just false info.

Who knows why a kid wants to stay down or play up....Just confused on how the parents are upset...bc they would have been the one who ok'd lil Johnny to play Varsity.

Doesn't add up.

The bigger issue is if a sophomore playing JV doesn't want to come up to play on the varsity team. Freshman & JV team are the farm system for the varsity team.
As a sophomore Crete jr was offered the opportunity to move up to Varsity on his waterpolo team but on the advice of some seniors he declined. The reason was that on varsity he would see 5-10 minutes play time vs a full match 4 periods as a JV.

In the end it balanced out as he was allowed to participate in the Varsity workouts which helped him hone his skills and strengthen up quickly.
On the HS swim team he was Varsity as a freshman in which he did ok and was able to get full participation.
So I think there are valid points on both sides of the argument on whether to sit on the big boys bus (albeit at the back of that bus) OR be good enough to participate in steering the big boys bus.

But if I am a Varsity coach and a kid does not want the opportunity to play on the Varsity level, I am going to remember that and it may affect his future playing time on the team. Just saying. If you get the chance to move up, it can give you an advantage the next year having some experience. The kids were being brought up out of necessity so the Varsity could play. Like I said, coaches will remember guys who do not take advantage of such chances.

It got so bad the parents refused to let the coach attend the JV end of year banquet as well.

My understanding is he pulled up couple key players, Frosh QB, with parents blessing. It was other JV parents who were upset.. not cuz their kid didn’t get pulled but he took best JV players and they lost last game as a result

And by doing so that is the coaches parogative. This is why high school sports and coaches will struggle. If parents have this much power what coach would go to a school and coach anymore? Thr job of a coach is to put the best team on the field. If it means promoting from the lower levels so be it. Parents nowadats think yhe control teams and coaches have no power. So if this is becoming the notm, coaches will avoid going to that school.

The "B- word" is one of the major indicators of a Program's success.

Depends whether the parents B-uy in......
OR...........B-utt in to the Coach's Program operations

Well, I remember when my son was a sophomore he was asked to play varsity. He declined because he wouldn't have been the starter at his position, just a backup who would get some playing time. As opposed to starting and never coming off the field as a JV. Some kids value the playing time more

That is all fine and dandy however, in the end a coach will remember that the player only values themself with their playing time and not the team as a whole. Last time I checked footbalm was a team sport not an individual sport. If you are so worried about your playing time and getting time gonjoin cross country or swimming and diving. Also this was for the final game of the season not an entire season.

Yes it is a team sport. When my kid was offered the option as a sophomore, early season to move up to the Varsity he was counseled by a couple of his senior teammates to stay on Jv if he wanted to get more playing time.
After much hand wringing and mental gymnastics He discussed his concerns with both his Jv and with the Varsity coach. The solution was he stayed Jv for competition/playing time but did the varsity workouts/training. The results were positive, played starter his junior year and team captain his senior year.
Varsity coach instituted the Jv team participation-Varsity workout regimen as an important part of his program. A win-win for all.................

And the fact that you said it was the final game of the season was important to your argument/narrative and would've factored into his decision to play up.

You never mentioned in your reply that he spoke with the coaches and concerns. That changes the whole scenario. What I am saying as a coach, if I approached a player with the opportunity to move up and he flat out denies it wothout discussion saying he would rather play more. Then to me that is not a team player, that is a selfish player. Again, it all depends on circumstanxes. In your case sinxe it was midseason, I would side with you on the decision to stay down as there was discussion. This was a chance to show coaches next year what you have to offer. Again, flat out refusing a request for the ladt game could totally backfire on a player. Your case a team made the decision not just one individual. So it worked but this case like many in recent years, is a parent upset their child is not getting star treatment or playing time, and a coach pays.

More like the “E” word Entitlement. Parents /Admin don’t like something let’s fire the coach! And one wonders why there are a lack of quality coaches. We’ve seen this at Miramonte, St. Joe’s Girls program and HMB.

Well, in the case of my son, he would have been a third stringer at best. He was offered the option after the non league portion of the schedule. Debatable how much it would have benefited the varsity, though he was moved up for their two playoff games

I somewhat agree. If it was early in the season, and for the most part the kid would be riding pine, I would talk about it, howecer if it is the last game and I want to get a sneak peek at the future given the speed of the game being quicker at the upper levels, I eould look at that as a red flag in my mind as the kid is not a team player.
