De La Salle goes back-to-back

After losing to Monte Vista twice in the regular season, De La Salle beat the Mustangs 4-3 in eight innings on Saturday for its second straight NCS Division I title.

Monte Vista got off to a good start against De La Salle starter Cullen Kafka, who threw four innings in the semi-finals, with RBI singles from Dylan Lawlor and Tom Gavello in the second inning.

The Spartans evened the score in the fifth after loading the bases with one out. Giancarlo Mijares’ fielder’s choice and Trace Tammaro’s RBI single on an 0-2, two out pitch reset the game at two apiece.

This is when things got interesting.

De La Salle took its first lead with a run in the sixth and turned the game over to the bullpen after six innings of two run ball from Kafka. With two outs and nobody on, Jack Murphy drove the first pitch he saw for a game tying home run to send the game to extras.

In the eighth inning, Michael Curran reached on a two base error and was driven in by Austin Elder. Nick Cirelli came back for his second inning of work in the bottom half of the inning and retired the Mustangs in order to cap the title run.

Elk Grove rolls to section title

With a 14 run inning on the board, Elk Grove got to enjoy a victory lap of sorts in winning its third straight SJS Division I title.

Riley Lamb, Kenny Williams, Jake Jordan and Brian Freitas each had three RBI in Elk Grove’s 22-6 five inning win over Tracy to sweep the championship series.

In total, the Thundering Herd had nine extra base hits in support of Freitas, who gave up six runs in three innings while picking up the win.

Tracy, which led 6-5 before the fateful fourth inning, committed four errors and saw only eight of Elk Grove’s 22 runs be earned. Lee Brewer had a home run and three RBI.

Drake dashes Miramonte’s perfect season

Junior Ryan McLaughlin had himself a day for Drake in a 4-3 win over Miramonte to end the Matadors’ attempt at an undefeated season.

He threw a complete game, four hitter with eight strikeouts and had a double with two RBI to lead the Pirates to the Division III title.

Miramonte’s best chance to reclaim the lead (it led 2-1 after three innings) came in the sixth after it loaded the bases with no outs. However, a strikeout and two fly outs gave the Matadors a single run to leave them trailing 4-3.

Sam Liang got the start for Miramonte and went 5.1 innings in giving up four hits, two walks and four runs.

Nice job, Drake HS. Marin County Athletic League consistently underrated. Drake never lost to anyone outside Marin this season.

It's going to be interesting to see what becomes of the MCAL as the NCS is realigned.

Just saw this, posted on the NCS thread about the MCAL. And technically Analy / Sebastopol is outside of Marin (Sonoma County), but very close.
