Woodcreek completes comeback at Granite Bay

With a 10-7 win at No. 5 Granite Bay on Tuesday, Woodcreek shook up the Sierra Foothill League championship picture.

Woodcreek is in the fourth and final automatic bid spot from the SFL while Granite Bay, which beat Oak Ridge two out of three times, is a game back of the Trojans heading into today’s regular season finale.

Granite Bay led 4-0 heading into the sixth inning after Darren Nelson’s RBI, two out single in the first inning. Granite Bay drew three walks in the opening inning. The Grizzlies had two more free passes in the fourth inning to load the bases in front of leadoff hitter Kenny LeBeau, who took advantage of a 2-0 count for a bases clearing double to right field. LeBeau tied his season high with three hits and set a season high with three RBI.

Chris Daniels breezed through the first five innings with three hit ball in seven strikeouts. He gave up back-to-back hits and a walk to start the sixth before turning the game over to the bullpen. The inning turned into a five run bonanza for the Timberwolves, which got RBI hits from JC Santini, Mitchell Hirata, Nick Hendricks, Kyle Kern, Dennis Boatman. Three of the five runs came with two outs.

After the Grizzlies scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead at 7-5, Woodcreek scored five runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by a three run homer from Boatman. All five runs came in with two outs and capped a six hit, three walk showing from Woodcreek over the final two innings.

Tyler Smith closed the game for Woodcreek by striking out the side on 14 pitches. The junior has thrown 13 innings of one run ball this spring with 12 strikeouts.
