Absolutely not. The CIF had already stated they wouldn't consider CCS consolation bracket winners, the games were 100% meaningless. Some people say they were a money grab but I believe it was more the CCS trying to get the CIF to change their bylaws regarding letting non-section champions qualify. The CCS approved the consolation bracket hoping to showcase the CIF this great idea of theirs, to hopefully allow the 'consolation bracket champion" be considered in future years. The idea backfired big time and the consolation bracket turned out to be a complete farce - they were nothing more than JV scrimmages that in the end impacted a lot of non-football people (especially at Milpitas), and punished one of the strongest programs in the section (not to mention all of the sophomore and junior football players that really had nothing to do with it).

If the CCS wanted more section teams to be considered for state games, the simple answer is to get rid of the Open Division. The consolation bracket was not to help the WCAL teams, it was to help the undefeated teams like Terra Nova or Pioneer that get bumped into the CCS Open based on points. Since teams from the same league can't play each other in the first round of the Open, you usually end up with the WCAL teams hammering an undefeated team that was bumped up. The consolation bracket was to try and give those teams a shot at a state game by being a 'one-loss bracket winner".

The consolation bracket was just a stupid idea and poorly thought out from start to finish. Hopefully the new 13 division state playoff proposal gets passed, because a CCS consolation bracket next year will be the same joke it was this year.
