Sacto. Bee newspaper Girls BB Rankings & Commentary - 1/18/2022

Sacramento Bee newspaper Girls basketball rankings as of 1/18/2022, and commentary by Bee correspondent Cameron Salerno.

MCCLATCHY WINS (UPSETS) METRO OPENER Two weeks ago, the McClatchy High School girls’ basketball team was in a position no team wanted. The Lions were forced to postpone and reschedule games due to COVID-19 issues within their program. It took two weeks for McClatchy to play a game in 2022. McClatchy returned to the court Friday with a statement win. The Lions beat Metro League rival and previous No. 2 Laguna Creek 87-63. The Lions jumped from No. 7 to fourth in the rankings. Star senior Saray White had 22 and rising freshman Nina Cain had 20. McClatchy got contributions from underclassmen in Kaela Stancil-Williams, who had 15 and Norrett Lewis, who had 12. Sophomore Milah Masters had eight points and eight rebounds. McClatchy during the spring only played two games because of COVID-19 issues. With roster depth and youth, the Lions will challenge Laguna Creek for the Metro League title.

OAK RIDGE MOVES UP TO NO. 2 After a strong performance against the previously third-ranked Del Oro, Oak Ridge is The Bee’s new second-ranked team. The Trojans are 3-0 in Sierra Foothill League play, with wins over Del Oro, Granite Bay and Rocklin. Oak Ridge has two big league games this week with Whitney on Wednesday and a battle against The Bee’s top-ranked team Folsom on Friday. All six teams in the SFL are ranked. “Every SFL game is like a playoff game,” Oak Ridge coach Steve White said after his team’s win over Del Oro. “

ANTELOPE SURGE Defending Division ll Sac-Joaquin Section champion Antelope has been on a tear. After losing to St. Francis on Dec. 10 to drop to 2-3 on the season, the Titans have won seven games in a row. Antelope is currently 4-0 in the Capital Valley Conference play. A big reason for the Titans’ success has been junior Mary Carter, who transferred from Rocklin. Carter had to sit out the first 30 days of the season and made her season debut at the end of 2021. In six games this season, she is averaging 26 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and 3.5 blocks per game.

THE BEE’S TOP 20
1. Folsom 16-0
2. Oak Ridge 14-4
3. Del Oro 15-3
4. McClatchy 9-4
5. Laguna Creek 12-2

Mills stands alone

In the Age of Equity, strange things happen. Witness the Division IV NorCal girls' playoffs. Mills of Millbrae has become the last CCS public school female team standing in the entire CIF tournament, regardless of bracket. The Vikings of Coach David Matsu produced a lackluster 4-8 record in the Peninsula Athletic League South in 2022. Their overall record entering NorCals was a very modest 12-12. They did not capture a championship of any kind this season. They do not possess a distinctly stellar, go-to, all-star calibre player of serious note. College recruiters are not hovering around them. But here they are as the Number 8 seed in D IV; they face Argonaut Saturday at 6 p.m. in their own gymnasium not far from SFO in a D IV semi-final contest. A victory gets the Vikings into a NorCal championship game. How does Mills succeed (beyond the obvious competitive balance factor)? Coaching. Preparation. Patience. Defense. Pace. Shot selection. Savvy. The Vikings are a prime example of over-achievement, especially if you focus only on the offensive end of the floor. The sum is much greater than the individual parts in Millbrae these days. And that's a supreme compliment. It's worth pointing out again that a CCS public school girls' team has not played for, or won, a CIF basketball title in 34 years, whether enrollment- or equity-based. Is Mills, essentially coming out of nowhere, going to shockingly overcome that legacy? Who knows? Bizarre outcomes have been occurring with some regularity. Argonaut, Saturday's opponent, is another underdog, a 12th seed. Much credit goes to both of them.

Campo vs Riordan Sold Out

Not exactly breaking news but gofan.co FINALLY posted the Campo vs Riordan ticket availability this morning and it was immediately SOLD OUT. This really sucks for basketball fans who wanted to attend the game in person. Whoever is responsible for these types of decisions - CIF at the NorCal or state level - should be fired! I don't think any tickets were made available to the general public.

Branson is young AND talented!

Some exciting basketball was played in Marin County last night - In the first game, the Lincoln Mustangs proved to be a nightmare to play against! The Aquino brothers are fast and RELENTLESS. Marin Catholic jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead, but the tide turned quickly as the intensity picked up. Lincoln sped the game up, stole MC's lunch pail AND lunch money and raced to a frantic 75-49 win. Excellent careers for Marin Catholic's Kyle Winters (college-level guard), Noah Deitch (D3 commit), Charlie Allen(Arizona State football commit) and others. Lincoln will be a tough matchup for anybody. It won't be pleasant for Pleasant Valley guards.

Branson played without one of their leading scorers - Jase Butler, out with an ankle injury, but knocked down shots and controlled the tempo of their game versus St. Francis from the tip. Freshman phenom Semetri (Te Te) Carr lit up the Lancers early with 5 three-pointers in the first half (21 total points in the half); his poise is amazing for a young player. St. Francis looked like they may have looked past the Bulls. The Lancers and Montana-commit Kerr didn't take it personally until it was too late. The MCAL-tested young Bulls have persevered and grown into a very solid team. Senior guard Joaquim Arauz-Moore is an undervalued star and stat sheet filler. He has such great leadership...controlling tempo and pace. Next up = a rematch with SPSV at 6 PM at Dominican University. I take Branson by 5 if Butler is available.

March 3 Scoreboard

Bishop O'Dowd beat St. Ignatius 4-3: AJ Carter had a triple and three RBI. SI scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead before the Dragons scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Cardinal Newman beat Buchanan 8-0: Justi Brinson had three hits and four RBI. Mason Lerma tossed a complete game shutout with six strikeouts.

Franklin-Elk Grove beat Vista del Lago 1-0: Jordy Lopez and Nolan Stevens combined for nine innings of one hit ball with 10 strikeouts.

DLS v. Riordan…. Open Bracket!

Here we go, the big boys…

Riordan of SF is 20-8, and the early season where they had a good number of the losses can be (sort of) disregarded…. They were adjusting to the relatively late transfer our of two top players….

They have it going now…. Beat Mitty by 16 the other night to get here.

DLS has been, well…. DLS. Making a steady run thru their league, tough non-league slate. They are 22-5

Winner here gets to go to Moraga to take on the Tough Kids from the Back Alleys of Moraga, aka Campo.

Speaking of Campo, the Cougs slipped past DLS last week to earn the bye.

5 minutes to game time…

EBAL All League Awards

The EBAL playoffs begin this week. The league is about as balanced as it has ever been, with some fantastic games all season all up and down the league.

The top 5 seeds all have solid chances of coming out on top of the EBAL playoffs, depending on how it all plays out.

Dublin 8-1
DLS 7-2
SRV 6-3
Dougherty Valley 5-4
Granada 5-4
Amador Valley 4-5
Foothill 4-5

Open Games tnite

These can go any which way. I don’t think much separates
#1 campo vs # 7 Sheldon. But it’s fun nonetheless.

My picks
1. I like Mitty even having to travel to a tough crusader gym. Last 2 games I watched MC I really enjoyed them but I’m doing to go with a more senior led team. MC will be back next year stronger.

2. Sheldon has a tough test against Clovis West on the road. Clovis has not played the same schedule Sheldon has. I would not be surprised if Sheldon beats them. They struggled shooting against MC and Clovis doesn’t have the same size and it’s not in a big arena so I think Sheldon offensively plays much better. Clovis can score with best of them though. I will go with upset here. Sheldon.

3. DLS vs Riordan. - I think the home spartans get the win and Riordan gets shafted. Riordan shouldn’t be on the road.

good luck and have fun.
