Game of the Week poll - https://norcalpreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/week-2-game-of-the-week-poll.28977/

10 Thoughts: Week 2 Takeaways and Big Basketball News

1. Some big early plays on offense and an overall stout defensive effort led Serra to a 21-14 win over Folsom on Saturday afternoon in San Mateo. The Padres are the No. 1 team in Northern California and will look to complete the same two-step from a year ago when De La Salle comes to campus next weekend.

2. Based on the CalHiSports state rankings, it isn’t a shock that Orange Lutheran won at De La Salle on Friday. What was surprising was Orange Lutheran scoring 21 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 35-14 win. Orange Lutheran junior running back Steve Chavez rushed for more than 150 yards.

3. San Ramon Valley got off to a fast start in a 42-14 win over St. Ignatius behind more than 300 passing yards from senior Luke Baker. The Wolves started the year at No. 9. Could they end up this season at the second best team in the NCS?

4. St. Mary’s added a second quality win in as many weeks with a 42-33 win over Central Catholic. The Rams outscored the Raiders 15-0 in the fourth quarter and got three rushing touchdowns from senior Asante Carter. They will travel to undefeated Manteca on September 1.

5. On the losing side of the Holy Bowl was Central Catholic quarterback Tyler Wentworth, who threw for two touchdowns, ran for a score and had an interception on defense. A Clemson baseball commit, Wentworth is also one of the most versatile football players in the region too.

6. Oak Ridge overcame a 12-0 first half deficit to hold serve at home against Grant in a 21-18 win. Top 2025 prospect Kaleb Edwards had more than 100 receiving yards in proving to be a difference maker. He has all the ingredients to be a national recruit with his size and athleticism and is backing it up once against as a junior.

7. Riordan started fast in a 36-17 win over Sacred Heart Prep on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Michael Mitchell Jr. connected with senior Tyrone Jackson and junior Chris Lawson for scores as the summer momentum for the Crusaders showed no signs of slowing down after the opener.

8. Heading into next week’s game at Windsor, Escalon posted an impressive 23-21 win at Buchanan with a 32 yard field goal from Talan Reider in the final seconds. With a seven game road trip to start the season, Escalon’s next three games before TVL play pose more challenges with Windsor, California and Oakdale.

9. Switching to basketball news, there was major transfer news as 2026 forward Evelini Smith has transferred from Antelope to St. Mary’s-Stockton. The 6-foot-3 Smith is one of the top freshmen in the state, but had her first high school season halted due to a knee injury. The Rams make a strong case for a No. 2 preseason ranking after losing in the NorCal Division I finals last season.

10. Chalk up another major recruiting win for St. Mary’s as it landed a commitment from Riordan 2024 wing Zion Sensley. At 6-foot-8, Sensley is an athletic wing who poses problems as a scorer and play maker. The likely top ranked senior, Sensley is back at Riordan after spending the past two years at Prolific Prep

2024 Football Top 50: 10 Trends to Know

2024 Football Top 50 Rankings

1. There are eight newcomers in the Top 50 headlined by Bishop O’Dowd offensive lineman Berlin Lillard (Colorado State), Riordan OL/TE Kalolo Kaihea and Serra offensive lineman John Holthaus (Colorado State). They are ranked No. 28, No. 39 and No. 31 respectively. Kaihea is starting football this year with the potential for a big move up following this season.

2. Since we just noted it, let's take time to look at Colorado State having a pair of Top 50 recruits heading into the high school season. Head coach Jay Norvell is entering year two in Fort Collins after a successful run at Nevada along with Will C. Wood quarterback Carson Strong.

3. Acalanes wide receiver Trevor Rogers (California) and Wilcox offensive lineman Justin Hylkema (Arizona) both have jumped more than 20 spots since the spring and have given Pac-12 commitments. Granite Bay linebacker Frank Cusano (Washington State) and St. Mary’s-Stockton safety Omari Gayles (Harvard) also moved up five and four spots respectively.

4. Offensive line has been a position of strength for NorCal the past decade and 20% (10 of 50) of the rankings fit this category. One trend to note is only three of the top 13 are offensive linemen. The biggest group was wide receivers/tight ends combined at 12. Four of the Top 12 as pass catchers led by Windsor’s Ananias Walker.

5. Section supremacy in these rankings usually comes down to the Sac-Joaquin Section and the North Coast Section. The SJS leads the way with 20 prospects. They have five in the top nine and nine in the top 20. However, the Central Section came in second at 16 players with seven players from Serra. The NCS has 12 players in the rankings.

6. Many of the top prospects have given college commitments with eight of the top 13 players off the board and Central Catholic’s Manasse Itete expected to commit today. California has a pair of commitments in Acalanes’ Trevor Rogers and Central Catholic’s Brooklyn Cheek. The top unranked prospects are Armijo’s Jericho Johnson, Serra’s Maealiaki Smith, Windsor’s Ananias Walker and Palo Alto’s Ikinasio Tupou.

7. San Jose State enters the fall with three Top 50 commits including Serra teammates Jabari Mann (linebacker) and Joseph Bey (defensive back). They also secured a commitment from Overfelt linebacker John Stowers. The three players represent some of the best defenders in the Central Coast Section.

8. With commitments from Lincoln Stockton’s Jathyn Long and Del Oro’s Tommy Poe, Sacramento State is off to a good start in the receiver room. Poe is a big target who can stretch the field while Long is dangerous at catching short and making plays after the catch. In the resurgence for the Hornets, there have been numerous NorCal grads leading this position.

9. Northern California is a good recruiting territory for the academies and Army and Air Force already have a pair of Top 50 commits. Army went to two of the best programs in the region in landing Folsom wide receiver Brian Ray and Serra linebacker Marley Alapati. Air Force landed commitments from a pair of teammates at Vista del Lago with offensive weapon Matt Long and offensive lineman Brandon Nazworth.

10. Much like the academies, there is a history of Ivy Leagues being able to pull out Top 50 players. In 2024, St. Mary’s-Stockton defensive back Omari Gayles (Harvard) and Palma defensive end Tommy Ducker (Cornell). Both players are high motor defenders who are possible All-NorCal selections for their senior years.

PCAL Week 1

PCAL Week 1- ( CCS starts a week after most other section)

Some good matchups exciting matchups stating on Thursday night. (PCAL will play at least one Thursday game every week due to lack of officials in the area.) Oakdale v Aptos and Clayton Valley vs Salinas are the biggest non section matchups (the only non CCS ones this week😉). Most intriguing local matchup is Monterey vs. St.Francis CC. Monterey is expected to challenge in the Gabilan, while St. Francis is building something special, despite hovering around 25-30 players annually.

Gabilan

Thu 08/24 Alisal (Salinas, CA) at Alvarez (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm
– This should be called the Gabilan 7th place Bowl game, both these large schools are considered every year for the Gabilan. Alvarez won last year and that kept them up. Alisal returns the favor this year. Alisal 24-20

Thu 08/24 Soquel (CA) at Los Gatos (CA), 7:00pm
- Nobody can accuse Soquel of ducking hard non-league opponents. Los Gatos 35-14

Thu 08/24 Palma (Salinas, CA) vs Soledad (CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm-
But you can question Palma’s non League schedule 3 Mission South teams and an out of state team from Yuma. Palma 28-0

Fri 08/25 Oakdale (CA) at Aptos (CA), 7:00pm
– You think anybody will run the ball much in this game? Who runs the best Wing. Going with the home team and betting the over on rushing yards. Aptos 35-34

Fri 08/25 Oak Grove (San Jose, CA) at Hollister (CA), 7:30pm
- Oak grove has fallen on some hard time recently. I like the Haybalers here. Hollister 28-14

Fri 08/25 Monterey (CA) vs St. Francis (Watsonville, CA) at Monterey Peninsula College (Monterey, CA), 7:30pm-
This game intrigues me as St.Francis could be a rising power and I expect Monterey to compete in the Gabilan. Monterey gets a scare but holds on. Monterey 34-33

Fri 08/25 Clayton Valley (Concord, CA) at Salinas (CA), 7:00pm
– Salinas is a bit of an unknown, as they lost a lot of offense from last year. But Zenk has built a hell of a program and they will reload. Salinas 24-21

Mission North

Thu 08/24 North Monterey County (Castroville, CA) at Christopher (Gilroy, CA), 7:00pm-
Tough matchup for the Condors vs an old PCAL rival expect to contend in the Mt. Hamilton League. Christopher 35-7

Fri 08/25 Santa Cruz (CA) at Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA), 7:30pm-
These crosstown rivals have trended in different directions the past 20 years. Santa Cruz will be happy ot be out of the Gabilan. Santa Cruz 28-0

Fri 08/25 Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA) at Los Altos (CA), 7:00pm-
MVC looking to regain some stability and its old winning ways after a carousel of coaches. MVC 17-14

Fri 08/25 Seaside (CA) at Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm-
Potentially a great match up here if Rancho was able to reload after last years record breaking season. Seaside 28-24

Sat 08/26 Watsonville (CA) at Carmel (CA), 2:00pm – Lets see if Carmel has found a consistent QB to go along with its playmakers and experienced O line. Carmel 35-14

Sat 08/26 Gonzales (CA) at Scotts Valley (CA), 2:00pm – Tough Opening day match up for Gonzales vs a historically stingy defense Scott’s Valley 21-0

Mission South

Fri 08/25 King City (CA) at Greenfield (CA), 7:30pm-
KC looks to avenge last years loss that sanpped a 10 game streak vs their south conty neighbor. KC 24-17

Fri 08/25 Marina (CA) at Pacific Grove (CA), 7:30pm-
I want to pick Marina, I hate picking PG to win. They are playing this game just to make me pick them to win. Not doing it. Upset special. Marina 21-20

Fri 08/25 Sobrato (Morgan Hill, CA) vs North Salinas (Salinas, CA) at Salinas Sports Complex (Salinas, CA), 7:30pm – North Salinas stops the bleeding and get their first win since the playoffs 2 years ago. North Salinas 16-14

Santa Lucia -Of Note Pajaro and RLS are not playing this week. RLS is a boarding school and they historically have been playing 9 games because their academic calendar does not start until 8/23. I don’t know why Pajaro only scheduled 9 games. (Edit- Pajaro did have a game for Week 1. Was not showing on Cal Preps until Thursday night)

Fri 08/25 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA) at Ripon Christian (Ripon, CA), 7:30pm- Because I added this late not choosing a winner. On paper this looks like a bit of a mismatch.

Fri 08/25 San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA) at South San Francisco (CA), 7:00pm- Lets see if SLV can start to turn this once proud program around vs a program that started to turn things around last year. South San Francisco 21-17

PCAL 2023 Preview

PCAL Football_

A quick recap of the PCAL. The Southern CCS is comprised of the PCAL. It is 28 teams from Monterey Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. This year there are 7 teams that comprise the 4 divisions. The Gabilan (A) receives 4 playoff bids, the Mission North(B) 2, the Mission South (B) 2 and the Santa Lucia (C) 1. In most years the 5th place Gabilan team qualifies as an at large team, and my guess so will the best 3rd place team from either the Cypress or Mission (maybe both?) . PAL-booster and the NASA computer know how CCS at large playoffs are figured out.

Predicted order of Finish-

Gabilan(A): Salinas has been the class of the PCAL Gabilan for the past 5 years (excluding covid). I am not picking against them until they lose. They did lose a lot of playmakers to graduation, but they have built a strong program and will easily re-load. Palma looks to challenge this year as they have the arguably the best playmaker in the league, but their lack of depth may hurt them. As always Aptos and Hollister will be tough outs. Monterey, new to the Gabilan this year, may have the fastest and most athletic team but lack some depth upfront. Look for them to challenge the top 4. Soquel has built a fantastic program; I just don’t know if they have the depth to compete with, the upper echelon of the Gabilan. And Alverez, mostly due to enrollment, (+/- 2200) and a victory vs Alisal last year, will continue to battle for 5th spot in the Gabilan.

  1. Salinas (CA)
  2. Palma (Salinas, CA)
  3. Aptos (CA)
  4. Hollister (CA)
  5. Monterey (CA)
  6. Soquel (CA)
  7. Alverez (CA)
Mission North (B): Very similar to the old SCCAL football days, as 5 Santa Cruz make up this newly formed B division. (Full disclosure I don’t read a lot about the Santa Cruz county teams) I believe this will come down to the offensive firepower of Seaside vs the defense of Scott’s Valley. Seaside will be explosive but may lack a little depth. Scott’s Valley always has one of the best defenses in the PCAL and that will be no different this year. It will be interesting to see how Santa Cruz responds after getting beat up last year in the Gabilan. Santa Cruz had a great run 4 year run. St. Francis of Watsonville has recently surpassed their cross-town rival Monte Vista Christian in attracting football talent. I believe this will be the first time they have ever been paired together in football. NMC and Watsonville will continue to find stability, I just don’t see either of these programs competing at the top level of this league.

  1. Scotts Valley (CA)
  2. Seaside (CA)
  3. St. Francis (Watsonville, CA)
  4. Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville, CA)
  5. Santa Cruz (CA)
  6. Watsonville (CA)
  7. North Monterey County (Castroville, CA)

Mission South (B): I wish RLS and Gonzales were here, then we could have the old MTAL! Carmel has steadily been improving since Covid and have 2 of the better playmakers in the league and some depth on the OL and DL. If they can get consistent QB play, this is their league to lose. Soledad had a great team last year and will look to be equally as good or better this year. Alisal, comes down from the Gabilan and with their physical ground and pound attack, will be a very tough out for everyone. Rancho San Juan has built a nice program, but they lost a lot last year, it will be fun to see how they respond. I wanted to rank KC higher, but I just don’t see them being better than the top 4. North Salinas needs to be consistent, 2 winless seasons in 3 years is tough. But that 1 year they made it to the semifinals of DIV. I was going to Pick North Salinas 7, but then I realized PG was in the league. So, they must be 7th. Truth is pacific Grove maybe the sleeper team of this league, as they had a much larger than anticipated turn out and for some reason that town produces some great athletes. Do not be surprised if they challenge in this league.

  1. Carmel (CA)
  2. Soledad (CA)
  3. Alisal (Salinas, CA)
  4. Rancho San Juan (Salinas, CA)
  5. King City (CA)
  6. North Salinas (Salinas, CA)
  7. Pacific Grove (CA)

Sant Lucia (C): RLS will look to become back-to-back league champions for the first time in the history of the program. Usually when you win an equity title you get moved up. And I am a little surprised RLS stayed down, and North Monterey County stayed up. RLS will have to replace some key skilled players as well as deal with some old south county rivals. Greenfield continues to see numbers increase and that is good for this program, they will challenge RLS for the title. Gonzales continues to rebuild its program, I know every school went through COVID, but some programs did better than others. Gonzales did not do well. Look for SLV to continue to rebuild its once proud program. I see Marina, Harbor and Pajaro battling out for last place as the programs continue to search for stability.

  1. RLS (Pebble Beach, CA)
  2. Greenfield (CA)
  3. Gonzales (CA)
  4. San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA)
  5. Marina (CA)
  6. Harbor (Santa Cruz, CA)
  7. Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, CA)

10 Thoughts: Week 1 Standouts/Week 2 Previews

1. Vacaville quarterback Brody Fortunati (Air Force) was terrific in the opener going 23-for-28 for 321 yards and four touchdowns against Davis. He showed accuracy to multiple levels and the arm strength to get the ball out to the sidelines.

2. Twelve Bridges 2024 running back Nathan Crawford (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) ran for more than 1,300 yards as a junior and started 2023 with a 236 yard, six touchdown effort against Nevada Union. He broke multiple tackles and showed some speed to break runs outside for big gainers.

3. Christian Brothers 2024 defensive lineman Mason Vicari (6-foot-4, 270 pounds) is a senior to watch in the SJS and posted four sacks in the opening win over Reno. Playing defensive end, he used power to win and also ran down quarterbacks who tried to take off from the pressure. He also played well at offensive tackle.

4. Casa Roble boasts a talented receiving duo as seen in the 21-7 win over Placer. 2024 Cole Owens had five catches for 66 yards and added a rushing touchdown. 2025 Elijah Huddle caught four passes for 65 yards. The Rams play at fellow 1-0 West Park on Friday.

5. The Game of the Week sees Folsom travel to Serra with nine 2024 Top 50 prospects expected to be on the field. Folsom also has a pair of 2025 To9p 30 defensive linemen. The game is a rematch of last year’s game that saw Serra control time of possession and beat the Bulldogs on the blue turf by the score of 17-12. The winner of this game will have the EARLY inside track on the NorCal Open Division bid.

6. While intersectional games are fun, it is also great to see ranked section matchups in the non-league. Oak Ridge hosts Grant as the top contenders in the Sacramento area behind Folsom. Manteca and Granite Bay play a rematch of the SJS Division II finals in a game that could last less than two hours with their running attacks. And in Stockton, the Rams will look to build on its opening win over Clovis West. Central Catholic comes in after running for nearly 400 yards in a win over Merced.

7. De La Salle kicks off their season on Friday as it hosts Orange Lutheran for one of the best matchups in the state. The teams are ranked No. 9 and No. 10 respectively by CalHiSports. It will be the first look at what should be a really good defense for the Spartans led by defensive linemen Matthew Johnson and Chris Biller, linebacker Andrew Cunningham and defensive backs Jonathan Guerrero and Robert Santiago.

8. A pair of rematches in Week 2 feature Acalanes traveling to San Marin (Acalanes won 21-14 in 2022) and Salinas hosting Clayton Valley Charter (Salinas got the 21-14 road win last year). Clayton Valley Charter is the only team out of the four in the NCP Top 20, but the other three teams make the list if it is expanded to 30.

9. The highly anticipated 2023 season for Riordan starts on Friday at Sacred Heart Prep, which was one of the top teams in the section a year ago. The Crusaders are anticipated to have a big play passing attack and strong line play. Sacred Heart Prep, which has had five straight winning seasons under head coach Mark Grieb, should be led by RB/LB Anthony Noto.

10. Two games that didn’t make the 10 pick’em games that I will keep an eye on are Escalon traveling to Buchanan as part of seven straight road games to start the year as their stadium undergoes renovations. Oakdale, which beat Sonora 27-20 in the first game for new head coach Garrett Martin, will travel to Aptos in a matchup of wing-T programs.

NCP Football Section Rankings: NCS/CCS Start this Week

Sac-Joaquin Section

1. Folsom (1-0)
2. St. Mary’s-Stockton (1-0)

14. Elk Grove (0-1)
15. Downey (1-0)

Thought Bubble: Manteca could be the best non Top 20 team in Northern California and will get a test this week against No. 6 Granite Bay in a rematch of the SJS Division II finals. Monterey Trail, Vista del Lago and Elk Grove all lost to ranked teams.

North Coast Section

1. De La Salle (0-0)
2. Pittsburg (0-0)

15. Menlo-Atherton (0-0)

Thought Bubble: The PAL-Bay and the PCAL-Gabilan all have three teams in the Top 10, which will make for a fun league schedule. The WCAL appears pretty wide open after Serra and St. Francis.

Northern Section

1. Foothill-Palo Cedro (0-0)
2. Pleasant Valley (0-0)
3. Enterprise (0-0)
4. Chico (0-0)
5. Orland (0-0)

Thought Bubble: The Eastern Athletic League holds the top four spots led by a Foothill squid that is coming off a 10 win season. Enterprise brings back dual threat quarterback Jaylen Johnson.

Oakland

1. McClymonds (0-0)
2. Fremont-Oakland (0-0)
3. Oakland Tech (0-0)

Thought Bubble: McClymonds still runs this section, but the depth appears to be better this fall. Fremont boasts Stanford bound Naki Tuakoi.

San Francisco

1. Lincoln-San Francisco (0-0)
2. Balboa (0-0)
3. Lowell (0-0)

Thought Bubble: Lincoln has won three of the last four Turkey Day Games and won a state title in each of those years.
