Alleged hazing/sexual assault at Oak Ridge

KCRA has reported that law enforcement is conducting a criminal investigation into an alleged hazing/sexual assault at Oak Ridge. https://www.kcra.com/article/oak-ridge-high-school-alleged-misconduct-student-athletes/44756578. From what I’m hearing, this occurred at summer camp in South Lake Tahoe and involved some players holding down another player, removing his pants, and penetrating him with a broom handle. If true, this is just infuriating. I feel for those who many have witnessed it but lacked the courage to step forward and stop it. I feel for the coaching staff and players who are victimized by the challenge that this has brought upon them. And my heart breaks for the parents and the young man who was victimized. So sad and so maddening on so many levels.

Game of the Week Poll - https://norcalpreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/week-1-game-of-the-week-poll.28957/

10 Thoughts: St. Mary's Stockton, Top Passing Combos, 2025 Rankings

1. Despite some typical season opener sloppiness, St. Mary’s got a very good 38-28 win over Clovis West. I will get more into 2026 wide receiver Kenneth Moore III in the next thought, but the Rams rolled with two quarterbacks on Friday (senior Samson Hunkin and sophomore Drew Rasmussen), had a strong running game led by senior Asante Carter and a defense that held Clovis West in check outside of three big plays.

2. Now onto Moore, who is one of the top sophomores in the region. The Rams utilized him in multiple ways in the opener. He ran good routes to get open down the field, showed he can take a short pass and go and was a tough runner on jet sweeps. His lone touchdown came on a 15 yard sweep to start the second half. He has offers from San Diego State, San Jose State, Portland State, Cal, Arizona, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

3. Outside of the Rams, Folsom and Oak Ridge were the other Top 5 teams in action in Week 1. Folsom shut out Monterey Trail 35-0 as sophomore quarterback Ryder Lyons had two touchdowns and the Bulldogs added a defensive touchdown. Oak Ridge had no trouble with Spanish Springs-Nevada 54-14 with the Trojans leading 28-0 at the half. Both teams have tough second games as Folsom travels to Serra and Oak Ridge hosts Grant.

4. Senior Bryson Davis and Manteca announced on Friday that they shouldn’t be overlooked despite graduating NorCal Player of the Year Blake Nichelson. Davis was a workhorse in the opener with 36 carries for 315 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-35 win over Vista del Lago.

5. On the other sideline was Air Force bound Matt Long, who had six catches for 230 yards and four touchdowns in a losing effort. Vista del Lago would motion him out of the backfield and he was a difficult cover to pick up in space. Quarterback John Koett had more than 300 passing yards and five touchdowns.

6. Granite Bay got nearly 200 yards on 40 combined carries from Cal junior commit Carter Jackson and sophomore Isaiah Ene in a 27-13 win over Elk Grove. The Grizzlies came into the season as the third ranked team in the Sierra Foothill League and have a challenging non-league that includes a section final rematch against Manteca, Pittsburg and Vacaville.

7. A passing combination to track this fall is Del Oro’s Caden Pinnick and Tommy Poe (Sacramento State). The duo connected four times for 89 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-34 win over Inderkum. Add in Pinnick’s running ability and these two will have a big impact on the Golden Eagles’ prospects this season.

8. Jeremy Plaa is one of the best coaches in the section at reloading year to year and the Knights got off to a fast start in a 50-33 win over Lincoln-Stockton. New starting quarterback Carson Lamb completed 70 percent of his passes for 320 yards and five touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading rusher at 75 yards and a score.

9. Earlier this week, the first 2025 football player rankings were released with notes on players 1-10, 11-20 and 21-30. The SJS has the top ranked player in Oak Ridge tight end Kaleb Edwards, but the Bay Area has the next seven players. 12 of the top 14 come from the NCS and CCS. Seven of the top 30 players are offensive linemen led by Valley Christian’s Champ Taulealea.

10. One more takeaway is despite conference upheaval, Cal and Stanford each have one local commitment in the 2025 class. Granite Bay's Carter Jackson is headed to Berkeley while Tennyon offensive lineman Siosiua Vete is a recent commit for Stanford.

Clovis West @ St. Mary’s (Stockton)

I would be lying if I didn’t say this game has my anxiety peaking.

Links to team previews:

The last game (playoffs) of season last year was heartbreaking for both teams, SM losing to Turlock (defense just couldn’t stop Turlock QB Cole Gilbert, especially in the end giving up two 2-pt conversions and missing an all important FG) and CW losing to SJ Memorial (after giving up a safety, it was pure downhill as CW couldn’t stop the running by SJM RB Brandon Ramirez - 204 yards on 19 carries and 3 TDs).

No doubt CW offense is loaded with 8 starters returning on offense, including a star-studded WR corp lead by Marshel Sanders, Landon Wright, and Jordan Pierro. Sleeper WR junior Jonavon Darrington. Last year’s starting QB graduated. But, Tyler Patrick has had his share of snaps and time behind center for the Golden Eagles and played very well in the 4 games he had opportunity, completing 36 of 62 passes for 642 yards, 6 TDs and only 1 INT (QBR 120.5). CW will be bringing a scary aerial attack that will require me to bring my track shoes (chain gang) with many big plays anticipated.

Many believe that St Mary’s achilles heal is their defense, giving up 51 points to Turlock and much early points against several teams they played last year. The Rams philosophy is and always has been “catch me if you can”. So, are the Rams going to give up points vs Clovis West? Absolutely! But, will CW be able to keep up with St. Mary’s offense? Can they slow down the Rams run game with Asante Carter and Christopher Maghoney in the backfield, along with mobile QB Samson Hunkin who gets overlooked for his passing ability. Hunkin threw for 1982 yards on 137 completions out of 182 yards passing with 21 TDs and 4 INTs and QBR 139.5. Yes, his leading WR Nas Danielson graduated. But, SM is returning 9 starters on offense and Samson will have junior WR Kenneth Moore as his new prime target. SM returns 7 players on defense, and word is that they have made much improvement having a year behind them and being very young. Omari Gayles and company will very much challenged.

In my opinion, the Rams bring a much more balanced offense to this game along with more seasoned defense. Both teams strength is their respective offense. But, if the Rams can control the LOS and run the ball at will, they can control the clock and the game. However, that’s not how I see this game playing out. I anticipate several big plays by both teams and a mini-shootout with both teams scoring lots. I do anticipate turnovers and penalties being the first game of the season for both teams, and the depth of each team to be the biggest factor with CW having many players playing both sides of the ball. These factors may contribute to a lower scoring output overall. Pre-season conditioning will be huge! Look for a close game in the beginning and the Rams playing catch me if you can in the second half. Then again, it could be the Golden Eagles making that statement. Much unpredictability truly anticipated being the first game of the season. So just scratch everything I have said. Lol. I’m just praying for a good game and no one from either team gets hurt. But sure, a SM win would be nice. 😉

GO RAMS! RAMPRIDE forever!!!

2025 Football Top 30: Players 1-10

10. Robert Santiago 6-foot-2, 170 pounds DB De La Salle

Santiago is a dynamic safety who is a big hitter going toward the line, but also is strong in coverage. Oklahoma, Miami, Washington, Oregon, Cal, Oregon State, Washington State, UNLV and San Jose State have offered Santiago.

9. Carter Jackson 5-foot-9, 175 pounds RB Granite Bay (CALIFORNIA)

Jackson was one of the region’s best backs as a sophomore with 1,568 yards and 22 touchdowns and is an early commit to Cal. He is a straight ahead runner with good power and has the ability to hit a big play.

8. Peter Langi 6-foot-5, 330 pounds OL Riordan

Langi returns to the region this season at Riordan and has more than 20 offers to start his junior season. Langi has very good size and the power to move defenders. He projects as a guard at the next level.

7. Hayden Anderson 6-foot-1, 180 pounds WR Windsor

Anderson is the type of offensive player where you just get him the ball in as many ways as possible. As a sophomore, he had 957 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns with 522 rushing yards and 10 scores. He has offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona, Washington State, Utah, Washington, Cal and UNLV.

6. Matthew Johnson 6-foot-5, 250 pounds DE De La Salle

Johnson fits the mold of the modern tall and athletic defensive ends. He also has good quickness off the line. Many big schools have offered Johnson, including Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Oregon and Washington.

5. Champ Taulealea 6-foot-4, 325 pounds OL Valley Christian-San Jose

A dominant run blocker, Taulealea is a well decorated linemen despite just two years of high school football. Texas, USC, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, Washington, Oregon State, Cal, Arizona and San Jose State have offered.

4. Chris Lawson 6-foot-2, 175 pounds WR Riordan

Lawson is a pretty complete wide receiver who can win down the field and also turn a short route into a big gain. He had 867 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns last season at Foothill-Pleasanton. Lawson, who has offers from eight current Pac-12 schools, also is a talented defensive back.

3. Jadyn Hudson 6-foot-2, 175 pounds DB Pittsburg

Hudson is a two-way playmaker for the Pirates with 71 tackles as a sophomore in addition to two receiving touchdowns. He has nearly 20 offers including non West Coast schools Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and Pittsburgh.

2. Marco Jones 6-foot-4, 225 pounds LB San Ramon Valley

Jones had 149 tackles as a sophomore as part of an All-NorCal season. He has very good size and plays with speed, power and a high motor. Also a talented baseball player, some of Jones’ offers include Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, USC and Oklahoma.

1. Kaleb Edwards 6-foot-7, 240 pounds TE Oak Ridge

Edwards garnered attention during his sophomore season and has really blown up during the offseason. His offers include Nevada, San Jose State, Washington, Oregon State, Nebraska, Cal, Miami, Michigan, Oregon, UCLA, Colorado State, San Diego State and Oregon. He is a big, athletic tight end who is also a ranked basketball prospect.

Anyone know what is going on with CalPreps power ratings

Since we are cranking up for the season I thought I would take a look at some of the team previews on Calpreps. I know there have been opinions all over the place on Calpreps on the board over the years (I know there are plenty who think it was full of crap). I have never thought it was that accurate especially before the season starts but I always thought it was at least a stable reference point year to year that gave you a general feel. Like it or not many sections are using the ratings for playoff seeding and where you start will impact how high the rating can get so I do track it more now than a couple years ago.

Either they think almost every team is way below their historical average or they have changed something in their calculations for power ratings. Doesn't seem so apparent for SJS teams but almost all are below historical averages. The CCS and NCS teams are way down outside of Serra. They have SF down -28.7 VC down -36.4 DLS down -18 Pitt down -17.8 Campo down -20 LG down -15 Wilcox down -24.6

Is NorCal football just getting drastically weaker or has something changed?

2025 Football Top 30: Players 11-20

20. Etene Pritchard 6-foot-2, 185 pounds LB Pittsburg

Arizona, UNLV, San Jose State and Nevada have offered Pritchard, who had 101 tackles as a sophomore for the Top 5 Pirates. He reads plays well, doesn’t miss many tackles and is comfortable playing in coverage.

19. Elijah Washington 5-foot-11, 175 pounds WR Castlemont

Washington is part of a talented group in the OAL this fall with offers from schools like Nevada, Cal, Oregon State, Washington State and Arizona. His combination of shiftiness and speed make him a big play threat at receiver and returner.

18. Benjamin Thurman 6-foot-4, 210 pounds WR Berkeley

Thurman is a big receiver who can run after the catch and does a good job of adjusting routes when the play breaks down. He also has some potential at defensive end. San Jose State, Nevada and Oregon State have offered Thurman.

17. Jordin Thomas 5-foot-9, 190 pounds RB Lincoln-Stockton

Thomas’ recruitment is off and running with offers from Arizona, Utah, Washington, Washington State, San Jose State and Fresno State. He has a physical running style, but can also make defenders miss in the open field.

16. Kellan Ford 6-foot-6, 225 pounds TE Monte Vista

Monte Vista has a good history at tight end and Ford is next in line. He is a big target who is adept at finding open areas on short to medium routes. Ford has been offered by Cal, Washington, UNLV and San Jose State.

15. Jaylen Johnson 6-foot-2, 201 pounds QB Enterprise

As a sophomore, Johnson threw for 1,606 yards and 22 touchdowns to go with 527 rushing yards and five scores. His size, athleticism and arm strength make him one of the most dynamic players to come out of the Northern Section in recent years.

14. John Mills 6-foot-6, 320 pounds OL St. Ignatius

Mills is a strong offensive tackle prospect who is really good as a run blocker. Washington was his first offer prior to his sophomore season and has been followed by Cal, UCLA and Nevada.

13. Jackson Lloyd 6-foot-6, 290 pounds OL Carmel

A three sport athlete for Carmel, Lloyd has prototype size for offensive tackles and clears out his side of the line in the run game. Lloyd holds seven offers from UCLA, Cal, San Jose State, Nevada, Washington, Oregon State and San Diego State.

12. Siosiua Vete 6-foot-6, 260 pounds OL Tennyson (STANFORD)

Vete gave his commitment earlier this week to the Cardinal in continuing the recruiting momentum for first year head coach Troy Taylor. He is an athletic tackle who plays with a motor throughout the play.

11. Jewelous Walls 6-foot-3, 231 pounds DE Pittsburg

Walls was one of the region’s most productive defenders as a sophomore. He has really good speed coming around the edge, but also plays under control to not overrun plays. He has been offered by Arizona State, Oregon State, Washington State, USC, Cal, Nevada, San Jose State and UNLV.

Scary situation at Lincoln HS today

Scrimmage between Lincoln (Lincoln), Lodi, Center and Capital Christian ended in the first 5 minutes after a player from Capital went down and had to have CPR performed on him. Play was a QB sneak so there was a pile of players and when the pile got up he stayed down. Things got urgent fast and they got the pads off of him and started CPR. Obviously a lot of kids were upset and after the ambulance left they called the scrimmage. Hope the kid is alright, but a very scary thing to see happen.

Preseason Football Preview: Top Non-League Games

If you were to hit the road over the next month, what are the best games to see in Northern California? We have put together the itinerary to not see teams more than once.

August 18: Manteca at Vista del Lago

Vista del Lago should be good on offense with quarterback John Koett and wide receiver/running back Matt Long (Air Force). Manteca starts the post Blake Nichelson era but returns talented back Bryson Davis.

August 19: Carson at Sutter

Sutter should win their opener, but it is a good chance to see Fresno State bound Auckland Asiata and what should be a good Huskies’ defense. Sutter went 11-1 in its first year in the SJS.

August 25: Central Catholic at St. Mary’s-Stockton

This is a really good night of action, but hard to pass on the Holy Bowl and a matchup of the Top 10 teams. The Rams have won three of the past five meetings, but none of those games have been decided by seven points or less.

August 26: Folsom at Serra

Folsom makes the afternoon trip to San Mateo in looking to even the series after Serra won at Folsom last year. Serra is the first non-De La Salle team to start No. 1 in almost 20 years. Folsom will have a game in hand going into this matchup.

September 1: Escalon at Windsor

Neither team starts in the NCP Top 20 but both teams figure to be in the mix for their section titles. Escalon is coming off a 13-3 season with some offensive line talent returning. Windsor will have a good passing attack with top receivers Ananias Walker and Hayden Anderson.

September 2: Inderkum at Sacramento

Inderkum has some momentum coming out of its scrimmage and takes on the Dragons, which has star running back Lamar Radcliffe (Utah) back in action after he missed his junior season.

September 8: De La Salle at St. Francis-Mountain View

De La Salle enters as the favorite, but this is the first return trip to Mountain View since the Lancers ended their regional win streak. St. Francis will lean on returning running back Kingston Keanaaina. The Spartans have a young, but talented group of running backs and defensive backs.

September 9: Clayton Valley Charter at Oak Ridge

Few matchups have the spotlight on offensive linemen, but this game has a pair of Division I commits. Clayton Valley Charter boasts Manuel Serna (San Jose State) and Oak Ridge brings back Ethan Dasmann (Fresno State).

September 15: McClymonds at San Ramon Valley

The 2022 version of this game was one of the best of the season with a 45-42 Wolves win in Oakland. San Ramon Valley returns quarterback Luke Baker, who is poised for an All-NorCal season.

September 29: Pittsburg at Los Gatos

This game features the top public schools in the North Coast Section and Central Coast Section in the preseason ranking. Both teams project to have good defenses coming off league title winning seasons.
