Blue/Grey Camp

Hey folks, a friend of mine signed up and took his son to the Blue/Grey Camp over the weekend. Some of the things he told me blow my mind. Apparently there were like 160 kids, broken into two groups, with about a half dozen adults overseeing them.

There was one bench press to the the 185 pound rep test. It took hours to get through this.

In the 40 they did keep time, manually. No electronic timing. Broad jump was "eyeballed" from about 4 feet away.

At the start of the combine, they touted that about 40% of them would be
"lucky" enough to be eligible for the RED ZONE, which are highly touted
athletes. IF you were "lucky" enough to be eligible for the RED ZONE,
you would receive notice via the mail. Now all you would need to do is
pay another $99 to be listed on their website. You can guess that every
kid there is going to be "lucky" enough to be eligible for the RED
ZONE.

I realize these guys gotta make money but at $135 a pop, it doesn't sound like a very good value. Anyone else have any comments?

Bud Presley reincarnated

The late Bud Presley, arguably the West Coast guru of man-to-man pressure defense prior to his passing, would be proud. Chuck Rapp has taken over his job in the 21st century. Rapp, no matter what kind of material he has at Serra, is an absolute master of preparation, motivation and execution. And tough, physical man defense is his calling card. Just ask Half Moon Bay on Friday night. Ouch.

NCS observations

D1
Monte Vista looks like they maybe in trouble. Struggled against Antioch and escapes CV. Berkeley HS will have confidence. A MV lost shakes up Open discussion.

SRV and DLS looks like they are both rolling offensively and defensively. Should be a GREAT GAME.

D2
El Cerrito is rolling now on both sides of the ball. Las Lomas has not seen this type of speed ,size and athleticism.

Monty will have home court and size advantage but Dublin speed and guard play could even out game. I saw in Press Democrat that Northgate guards were some of the best that Monty has seen per Fitchie. Well Dublin guards will impress you too.

D3
Bishop Odowd is clear favorite but Chris Hansen will make a impact on game. The is best BIG MAN matchup of the year in Norcal..Campo has played SAC, EC, and Modesto Ch.. They will not be itmidated.

Moreau and Drake should be a barn burner. Milstead didnt play in 1st matchup. Drake is battled tested.

Side note... I feel bad for those kids that left their HS teams to play for the Bball club in Northbay. Their HS teams are playing in playoffs game trying to win section regional state titles. While they are playing in meaning less game in Siberia.. You know those kids are regretting those decisions that adults made for them. Team success over personal glory.

OPEN SECTIONS......NCS style...

When I first heard about the open CCS section I was very skeptical.

After making the trip down to watch it the last couple of yrs I'm sold...I like it.

Am I correct that every team gets 3 games? (like an 8 team tourney) and then you are automatically placed back into
your sections for Norcals if you aren't one of the final 2 ?

The only downside I can see is that the teams don't get a chance to win their individual sections.

Honestly I'd like to see the NCS do it...

How much fun would an 8 team NCS be this year?

NCP's web site hacked?

Trouble with NCP's site this morning. 2 different computers & 2 different anti-virus indicate the site as "unsafe". The messages are the same & say that there is a type of trojan imbedded in the site identified as: HTML:HideMe-F(Trj)
It is only this web page this is happening with. I thought it might be a "False Positive" until I tried a 2nd computer.

Congrats Coach Bonfigli- Win #700!

I just wanted to say congrats Newman coach Tom Bonfigli. He's been a great coach and mentor to thousands of players and students over the years including me. I haven't done the research but winning 700 games has to put him in the top 20 all time in state? That is over 20 wins for 30+ years. Plus he isn't done so 800 is only 4 years away.

D4 has some really good match ups in round 2. You have Salesian going against Marin Catholic. (Upset Alert) I really think MC is going to beat Salesian. You have 2 very good teams from Humboldt County battling (Arcata and Mckminville) battling St Mary's and St Pats. Those teams are historically underrated. The big difference is they have to travel which is a big disadvantage.

Good luck to all.

Who's No. 1?

The majority of Cal high school girls' basketball teams are done for this season. Most of them had losing records. I'd guess there were more winless teams than undefeated teams. We focus on the front-runners, but like it or not, this majority of girls are the face of California girls' high school basketball. They deserve our recognition.

I've followed Miramonte since 2000, and for most of that time they've been at or near the top of their league. I only go to games that I think will be competitive, for entertainment value. But one year, I went to see them play a team that had been at the bottom of the league for a while, struggled to win a few games each year, may have had a winless season in there. I was curious what that team was all about.

I was amazed. These kids came out, played hard, kept their chins up, never gave up, and left me amazed. Clearly they wanted to play the game, and their victories came with every point they scored, every rebound they got. Needless to say, they were badly outscored and out rebounded. Basketball is a hard game, and they had skills, just not enough to win. I started thinking about this while reading the thread on whether the tournament was too big. I was particularly affected when Clay mentioned how his kids were thrilled to get in as a 14th seed. His kids wanna play. And I think so do the vast majority of girls who choose basketball as a sport. So here's to them all, my hat's off.
