State Predictions

My stab at the games d1-d4.

Open
Harvard Westlake 70
Saint Joseph’s 60

I think St Joe’s hangs around but the overall depth and talent from SoCal power is too much to overcome.

D1
ND Sherman Oaks 74
Granada 55

This game I feel could get away from Granada. Lots of Fire Power on other side. Hope I’m wrong and they play slow and keep it in 50’s. Gotta have monster games from 7fter.

D3
SJM 63
Pacifica Christian 62

Looks like a great matchup. Both teams have played really tough schedules and are battled tested.

D4
Valencia 65
HMB 55

Cinderella ends here.

I think the girls do better than the guys this weekend from the north.

Interesting D5 Matchup...

SoCal's Lynwood, aka "Weird Al HS" has 2500 kids, give or take... Yeah, Weird Al went there, as well as Duke Snider and Pete Rozelle..

Sierra has a little over 300, isn't even a private with any perceived advantages that might entail.

They are playing each other in D5.

I know, play whomever they put in front of ya... But this seems a little silly.

Seems like there should be an enrollment floor in the lower divisions, such as maybe a school with 500 or more can't be placed in D5, and maybe a school with 800 or more not allowed in D4. Otherwise, "competitive equity" sort of mostly works, kinda...

Anyway, Lynwood wil be interesting to watch. They started FOUR freshmen in the SoCal title game last night! And one of them, Jason Crowe jr., is averaging 36 points per game!

Half Moon Bay

It's been 34 years since a Peninsula Athletic League boys' basketball team won a CIF championship. The last school to pull off that feat was Menlo-Atherton in 1989. Jefferson of Daly City won a crown in 1988 as well. Now, Half Moon Bay is heading to Sacramento to play for a Division IV title. And they've been doing all of their damage on the road. Very nice work. Kudos all around.

NorCal Title Game Picks

Open - Modesto Christian over St. Joseph: Should be a really good game, but I'll go with MC's size being able to control St. Joseph enough inside and their guards will make plays down the stretch.

D1 - Salesian over Granada: Salesian has had a lot of recent disappointments in NorCals in recent years, but they are rolling right now.

D2 - Vanden over SJM: Toughest one on the board for me. Vanden seems to be getting healthy and have home court.

D3 - Oakland over Oakland Tech: Was impressed with Oakland against King's Academy and if it's hard to beat a good team three times, how hard is it to do four times?

D4 - Chico over Half Moon Bay: I have been way off on the D4 picks this year LOL. I'll go with Chico, which has beaten two CCS teams that were seeded higher than Half Moon Bay.

D5 - Sierra over Ripon Christian: In the smaller brackets, I like to go with a standout player and Sierra has one in Logan Kilbert.

Nor Cal Finals

Who does everyone have?

My thoughts
Mitty 62
Salesian 51
Salesian's post season run has been as impressive as any I can remember. This is a true team that finds a way to win. I think they can match-up better with Mitty than CW did. Mitty's size and depth are probably too much to overcome. Salesian keeps it close throughout. Mitty just has too much.

SMS 62
Tech 59
At this point I think Tech is the better deeper team. Going with the home court and the best player on the floor to get it done for SMS. Great match-up.
