Palma – Salinas - CCS

Expected to be one of the top D3/D4 (enrollment 890-920) teams in Northern CA next season. Strong senior class on both sides of the call. Lots of speed on offense and defense. A top 5 potential CCS caliber team.

Key Players:

All CCS Type Players (D1 prospects)

Drew Dahlman, Sr, OT/DT, 6-3, 266 one of the top recruited linemen in Northern CA (16 offers with Michigan, Wash at top). May be top recruited player ever from the Monterey County in modern times (since 50s) - will be a D1 center/OG. Father played at Stanford and 49ers and Coached at Stanford - OL for Harbaugh and NFL; He's one of the top linemen in Norcal. Ranked #2 center in the West by Scout. Very strong and quick and great technique. He is tough to handle on both sides of the ball and bigger and more explosive than last season.

Emilio Martinez, Sr, RB, 5-9, 182, D1 prospect - May break most of Palma's single season records for RB next season if he is healthy like his soph year. Mountain West type player and possibly some Pac 12 type programs. Faster and bigger and stronger than last season. Averaged 9.2 yards a carry last season; invited to Regional Nike Opening, had hamstring injury much of last season and missed several games and since healed; Interest from MWC (UNLV, SJSU) and several smaller programs (Cal Poly) and Ivy League (Princeton). Recruiting picked up after The Openning. As a junior – Last season, he had approximately 1000 yards 13 TDs and averaged 9.2 yards a carry. He only played 3 full games) As a soph he had over 1,500 yards rushing and 21 TDs (6.3 yards a carry). Very strong and very elusive. Emilio will be playing some safety as well this coming season and he would be an all CCS caliber DB if he played the position full time. He's fast and very strong physically - one of the strongest players in the weight room.

Other Top Players:

Zach Florez, Jr, QB, (5-10, 180), mobile, strong, and accurate passing QB (nice ball placement and hits receivers in stride with good vision). Last year’s backup. As JV QB he may have had as much passing and TDs as last season QB as JV who is preferred walk on at Stanford. Not a D1 caliber QB as last season (mainly due to size) but he is good decision maker, accurate and spreads the ball around and good vision – buys time and finds open receivers.

Stanley Smith, Sr, 6-0, 215, MLB/FB, 2nd team all defense. Very good LB and FB. Some interest at the next level. Started at MLB but also rotated in at FB/

Nick Georgalos, Jr, C/DE, 5-10, 220, one of the strongest players on team and very physical defender. Should have a big season on both sides of the ball.

Robert Hernandez, Sr, 6-2,240 OT/DT, Played a lot of OL ast season.

Richard Hernandez, Sr, 6-0, 235, NG/DT/OL, second team all league on defense.Very good defender. Quick and leverage.

Tristan Wahl, Sr, 6-1, 185, FS/WR, very good safety and WR - Ivy league and other college interest; Very good safety and strong.

Isaiah Blanco, Sr, 6-2, 185, WR/Safety/DB, , returning starter at WR some D1 college interest (including IVY league). Good hands and good 200M and 400M in track.

Vianni Fratangelo
, Sr, 5-9, 155, Slot/DB/KR (disclaimer my nephew), faster player on team and healthy now. Had season ending injury last season (concussion) and injury that slowed him in track this year, but should be one of the faster track sprinters in CCS next season. Good hands and threat on kickoffs and returning DB starter.

Kevin Telford, Sr, RB/WR/OLB, 5-10, 170, Very good defender and fast. Very strong for his size. 2nd fastest on team. Will get some time at DB or OLB as well. Out until mid to late season and started a couple games at RB when Emilio was out. 1,000 plus rusher type. Good 200M and 100M in track

PJ Scheigel, Jr, MLB, 6-1, 200, very good defensive player.Quick and closes to ball well.

Several other good players I am missing. FG kicker will be similar to a long recent line of D1 kickers from Palma. Started last season and can hit long FGs 35-40+yards and junior kicker will follow him as another good kicker. There are others seniors and juniors on line that should emerge and that also have experience. TE will be very good pass catcher and they will have lots of depth at skill positions not mentioned. Some other very good LBs as well. Couple questions on OL but lots of good candidates other than mentioned above. D-line should be very good.

Nonleague Schedule:

8/26 - 7:30p @ Sutter (Sutter, CA) – Regional State playoff team. In an uptrend as far as juniors and soph classes are very strong.

9/2 - 7:30p Saint Francis (Mountain View, CA) @Home – a top CCS team

9/10 7:30p Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, CA) @ Home – down from last season but good D3/4 team and could surprise.

9/16 - 7:30p @ Aptos (Aptos, CA) – reload from last season but probably not as good as last season although a tough CCS playoff caliber team.

In league - Salinas HS should be very good and becoming stronger over the following two seasons and San Benito (Hollister) defense should be very good and so team will be very tough (physical and smash mouth style offense).

Notes:

Palma should be a top 5 caliber team in CCS in 2015 and should compete far in CCS Open playoff title (will find out early as far as a benchmark when they play St Francis at home but this team overall seems to be more dedicated in numbers than last season). Lots of speed in Sr class. Srs were very good defense at lower levels and very good at scoring (one of the best in the school history). Very strong senior class as frosh (Top 3 in CCS with Serra and St Francis). Really strong and fast WR core and speed (and great run blockers). Defense will be very good and placekicker has shot to play on in college like several Palma kickers over the last few years (AZ, SJSU, Grambling). Should be a really good team and as goodor better than last season in many areas. Lots of offensive weapons - balanced attack.

Seniors: 2014 JV Record: 9-1 (QB broke arm and backup QB had cast on hand in only loss after held coreless in second half. As frosh and JV defeated St Francis). 2013 frosh 10-0.

Juniors: 2015 JV 8-2 (lost to Sutter and Salinas HS. Cowboys are in a big up trend starting next season)

Starting Quarterback Returning: No (Backup in some ways more mobile, buying time, and accurate than last years QB that is an invited walk-on at Stanford).

Top Running Back Returning: Yes (Martinez was soph of year in League and good shot at breaking several records at Palma for the position. Palma has depth at this position as well with speed)

Top Receiver Returning: no (However lots of returning players with very good hands and more speed than last season and could break last season’s WR yardage)

Top OL Returning: Yes (Dalman and 2 other returning starters on OL. Overall stronger physically than last season)

Top Defender Returning: Yes (Plus Dalman and several others)
